WELCOME BACK TO YOUR SCHOOL!
It is ironic that I am typing this welcome to the School’s alumni on
Remembrance Day. In reading The Crest, I am sure individual minds
instantly remember the School as it was when you attended it and
within that there are additional memories of events, rituals, staff and friends.
I am delighted to report that the School
continues to develop in many ways.
Physically, the past year has seen the opening
of two very important School buildings.
The first is our gymnasium which opened for
student use at the start of this year. As you
can see from the following images it is a truly
splendid venue. I have immodestly, but accurately, described it as the finest School
gymnasium in the Commonwealth. The gymnasium has two full-sized basketball courts
which allow a range of sports to be played
including Indoor Soccer, Volleyball,
Badminton and Handball. The gymnasium
has a weights room that is well utilised by
students and staff. Two new hardcourts have
been added to the previous two, so there are
now four external playing surfaces for Netball
and Tennis. Cricket nets have also been
installed on the Northern Oval!
The second new building is the School’s Administration Building. Opened at the beginning
of Term 4, our staff now have a dedicated staffroom for the first time in the School’s
history. The staffroom has panoramic views over the Indian Ocean and I look forward to
an Alumni Function being staged there before too long! The Administration Building has a
purpose built Sick Bay, Boardroom, Meeting Rooms and it houses the School’s Principal,
Business Manager, Enrolments Officer, Database Officer and Marketing and
Communications Officer as well as the School’s IT consultants.
Adjacent to the Administration Building is our
wonderful new Nature Playground for our
Primary Students, which I am sure, has
tempted many a Middle and Senior School
student to jump its fence and climb into the
Crow’s Nest. Without breaking your hearts,
all our classrooms are now air-conditioned!
The School continues to be recognised and
visited by increasing numbers. For the second successive year the School recently hosted
the Synod of the Anglican Diocese of Perth, which saw close to four hundred visitors at
the School during the last weekend of October. There are close to 1600 students at the
School and I am proud of the activities and subjects that our students can participate in
and select.
Most importantly, the welcoming, open and
respectful qualities of our students, about
which I am often complimented, continue to
be evident to all visitors to the School. Such
an impression and pleasing culture is only
possible because of the work of students and
staff past, so take a bow!
I trust that your lives following your time at Peter Moyes have been purposeful and
productive ones. It is always wonderful to hear of the exploits of our students, be they
students being selected for the inaugural AFL Women’s Competition, students exploring
and travelling the world, students creating their own businesses and/or pursuing various
degrees at University! An invitation to visit the School and make fresh your memories is
always open to you.
Act Justly and Honour God!
Julian Dowse Principal
Welcome to the fourth edition of The Crest!
First and foremost, the Alumni Committee would like to congratulate the Class of 2016 on
their graduation. They are joining a community of over 1000 people who have graduated
from PMACS since 2004. We hope that the 2016 graduates have the chance to enjoy a
well-deserved break over the summer months and we wish them all the best for their
next endeavours, whatever they may be.
It has been a busy year for both the Alumni Committee and the
School (see Julian’s article above), with many exciting
developments complete or in the works. Many thanks to those
Alumni who completed our survey earlier this year, we were
very happy to have received responses from all year groups. It
seems PMACS alumni have ventured far and wide since leaving
PMACS. We heard from TAFE students, university students,
dancers, consultants, journalists, midwives, police officers,
teachers and many others. The majority of respondents said
that they would like more social events, so keep your eyes
peeled for another sundowner event early next year!
Survey respondents also stated that they would be interested in
volunteering to help the PMACS community. So we are in the
process of engaging with the school to see where alumni can be
of most help. For the moment, we have our sights on organising
a few alumni presenters for the 2017 Connect Learn Engage
seminar series or 2017 Career Expo. We have also been told
that work placements for Year 10 students are needed for June
next year. If you or your workplace would be interested in
presenting at the School or providing work placements, please
let us know.

We trawled through the archives to find old year group photos for the PMACS Alumni
Facebook page and it was great to see all of the talk that these photos created on the
page. We were very pleased to hear how well our fellow alumni were doing and so we
have a dedicated ‘Happy News’ section in this edition. Check it out! If you or your friends
have news that you would like to share with the PMACS Alumni, please get in contact
with us for the next edition of The Crest.
We were also very lucky to get in contact with Emma King (Class of 2011) who has been
selected as a marquee player for the Collingwood Football Club in the inaugural AFL
Women’s competition. Read Emma’s interview on the next page!
The Alumni Committee said goodbye to Karen Russell (Class of 2004) in August this year.
Karen had enthusiastically served as chair of the committee since 2012 and those of us
remaining on the Alumni Committee are extremely grateful for all of Karen’s direction
over the years. We welcomed Kate Major (Class of 2007) as our new chairperson and
thank her for stepping up to the role, having already served on the Alumni Committee
since 2013.
We have also recently put a call out for two new Alumni Committee members to ensure
that we are able to continue working towards our committee objectives. We look forward
to introducing the new Committee Members in the New Year!
And finally, we wish everyone the best for the remainder of 2016. We hope that you have
a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year. We look forward to seeing you in 2017!
Best wishes,
PMACS Alumni Association Committee
Emma King (Class of 2011) has been selected as a marquee player for the Collingwood
Football Club in the inaugural AFL Women’s competition. Emma is also one of only
eleven members which make up the AFL Women’s Advisory Committee. This group will
develop the strategic plan for new league, focusing on workplace equality and player
support. The first season of the AFL Women’s competition will involve eight clubs, each
playing seven games across February and March 2017, followed by a grand final match.
We spoke to Emma from Melbourne.
How long have you been playing footy for? I've been playing football on and off since
Auskick. I started playing with the Quinns Bulls boys in U7s (Auskick) and played with
them up until U14s where they basically say girls can't play anymore. Then I went onto
to play for Joondalup Falcons Women's team in 2009-10 (14/15 years old). Then I
stopped again for Year 12 and uni, but came back to play for Coastal Titans women's
team in 2014 until now.
You play in the ruck - is that a position you've always
played? Why do you enjoy playing in that position?
I've always been tall, so through juniors I dabbled in
the ruck, but I only really took the position on when I
came to Titans FC. I really enjoy playing ruck as it’s a
play-making position. I feed it to the on-ballers and
they carry it into the forward. It allows me to create
space and be a tall target around the ground too! It
also helps that I'm 6'1”, which makes it hard harder
for my opponents to contest and/or defend against
me.
What do you believe your role will involve in Collingwood next year? What do you
hope to achieve there? At Collingwood, I'll be looking at taking on some form of
leadership role within the side, being a marquee player as well, we have to encourage
the other girls and create a good culture within the club on and off the field. On field,
I'll be looking at playing in the ruck and forward as a nice tall target. As a marquee
player, Moana Hope and I will be seen as the 'faces' of Collingwood FC Women's team,
and showing the pathways for young girls. This involves media appearances,
community clinics, marketing, advertising etc. Personally I hope to develop as a player
both in skill and in leadership, taking in knowledge from not only my immediate
teammates and support staff, but also Collingwood football club and the AFL
community in Melbourne.
How long do you plan to be in Melbourne for while you're playing for Collingwood?
(i.e. How frequently will you come back to Perth?) So I’m currently contracted to
Collingwood for one year. Marquee players are on a one year ambassador contract for
their respective clubs whilst other players just have a 6 month playing contract. I'll
hopefully be back in Perth for Christmas (and if Collingwood v Fremantle is a Freo
home game).
You have an architecture degree from UWA. What made you choose to play footy
over going into architecture? Yes I graduated end of 2015 with a Bachelor of Design. I
went travelling at the beginning of 2016 so didn't look for an internship or job and then
talk of football came around so I just decided to wait it out and see what comes of it.
When the opportunity came to be a marquee player, I jumped at the chance! Women's
football is only just beginning at a national level so I wanted to be a part of it all. It
won't be long until a true national draft begins and all the 18 year old girls will be
getting picked up and the older ones retiring. Football is for now and I'm glad I'll have a
degree to fall back into after this chapter of my life finishes. It's something I'm really
passionate about; I love everything about football, training in the gym, on the field;
working hard during the week to play good on the weekend - week in week out.
Can you see yourself moving into architecture once your footy career is over? Yes,
definitely! I will be going down the architecture pathway when the time is right. I'll be
looking at doing some sort of part time internship whilst in Melbourne next year, to get
my foot in the door somewhere.
