FMU NAAC SSR 2015 – Evaluative Report of the Departments 178
P.G. Department of Biosciences and Biotechnology
The Department of Biosciences and Biotechnology has started the regular
Post-Graduate teaching programs in Biosciences and Biotechnology in the year 2004.
The Objective of the Department is "Establishing a Foundation for Recent Advances in
Life Sciences and Inculcating Biotechnology as a Challenge for the Future”. The Goal of
the department is “Improving the Quality of Life”. The major programmes offered by the
School are MSc, M.Phil. and PhD in both Bioscience & Biotechnology
Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India recognized the School of
Biotechnology in 2007 as the centre for DBT-BTIS-net Bioinformatics Centre (BIF) for
Structural and Computational Biology work. Under this program, the Centre imparts
training to students, researchers and teachers on various aspects of Bioinformatics.
Department of Science & Technology (DST), Govt. of India sanctioned funds for
infrastructural development under “FIST-2008 program”.
Research is a core component of the academic curriculum starting with M. Sc.
Course. A wide range of research activities that addresses important biological,
biomedical and biotechnological problems are being conducted in collaboration with
specialists from different fields. Funding for research activities are through various Govt.
agencies (DST, DBT, UGC, INSA etc.) and also through International Scientific
Collaborations.

FMU NAAC SSR 2015 – Evaluative Report of the Departments 223
50. Detail five major Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Challenges
(SWOC) of the Department.
Five Major Strength
• Infrastructure facilities in terms of adequate space for class rooms and laboratories.
• Well equipped laboratories along with separate computer lab with internet
connectivity.
• Good nos. of student strength both in M. Sc. & M.Phill. programmes which are the
working force to fulfill the societal needs.
• Highly qualified Faculty members from different disciplines of Science to meet the
interdisciplinary requirement of Environmental Science.
• Outside the Department building we have enough space for different field
experiments.
Weaknesses
• Frequent interruption in power supply.
• Inadequate supporting staff in the Department.
• Delay in filling the vacant teaching posts.
• Difficulty in maintenance of the equipments due to lacking of technical staffs.
• Since the New Campus is distant from the Balasore town we face difficulty in
obtaining the service of the local experts in the field.
Opportunities
• Our Department being the only one in the coastal region of the state imparting
Environmental Science course under regular mode, we have a great opportunity for
survey and taking appropriate measures for the conservation of coastal biodiversity
of the state, particularly the prospective bioresources.
• Since Mangrove forests act as natural guards against disasters like tsunami and
cyclone, we can take initiative for creation of Mangrove forests, particularly at
estuarine areas where these forests are not there or have been denuded due to
anthropogenic activities.
• Near our Department at New Campus of the University, there are two important
industries like Emami Paper Mills Pvt. Ltd. and Balasore Alloys at Balgopalpur. The
Department has a great opportunity for developing strategies for eco-friendly
disposal of wastes of not only these two industries but also of the wastes of other
FMU NAAC SSR 2015 – Evaluative Report of the Departments 224
industries present at and around Balasore town.
• Assessment and regular monitoring of water quality and air quality of industrial areas
at and around Balasore town for appraisal of the local people regarding the impact of
industrial activities on public health, if any in this area, is also an opportunity for us.
• By organizing workshops, training basic techniques on water, soil and air quality
parameters to students as well as interested persons from other disciplines which will
increase the workforce of our discipline.
Challenges
• Being only Department in the coastal region of the state the great challenge for us is
to produce more skilled manpower who can contribute for environmental protection.
• Artificial regeneration of Mangrove forests near the estuaries of Balasore district.
• Developing strategies for bioremediation of wastes of industries, especially those of
Emami Paper Mill Pvt. Ltd. and Balasore Alloys which are close to the New Campus
of the University.
• Opening of new job-oriented course like M. Tech. in Environmental Science along
with existing M. Sc. & M. Phill. Programmes.
• Developing a database regarding the biodiversity of this region after through survey.
51. Future plans of the Department.
• The Department has different future plans not only to improve the quality of
Environmental Education and awareness in the state, but it is also taking measures
to improve the state of environment in and around Balasore.
• The Department is planning to open a new programme i.e., M.Tech. in Env. Science
in near future.
• The Department is also planning to provide environmental consultancy services to
farmers for organic farming, vermi-composting, mushroom cultivation etc.
• Pertaining to is strategic location the Dept. is also planning to initiate mangrove
forest conservation and afforestation in wastelands programmes to protect fragile
environment of this region.
• In view of the growing industrialization of the state the Dept is committed to produce
skilled men power for the preparation of EIA reports, providing pollution control and
environmental management plans for the industries.

P.G. Department of Population Studies
Orissa has a sizable population of Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes and
Other Backward Communities. The socio-economic and demographic scenario of the
state is in a transitional phase with high infant and child mortality, declining sex ratio,
reducing tribal population, increasing aged population, low status of women, increasing
geographical imbalances and frequent natural calamities. These interrelated problems
need to be comprehensively studied and acted upon through research and extension
activities. The Department of Population Studies stated functioning from the 2004-05
academic session on the objective of providing education and research facilities to the
students of the region with an adverse socio-economic and demographic background.
To begin with, a two-year (four-semester) Master Degree programme was introduced
with a student intake of sixteen. In the meantime, one-year (two-semester) M. Phil.
programme has been approved to begin from 2006-07 with an intake of four. Besides,
the Ph. D. programme has also come into force since March, 2006. Along with teaching
and research, the department has been taking up extension activities under the
programme of University-Society Interface for creation of awareness among the people
on various population and health problems in both rural and urban areas, especially
among the underprivileged.
