“Numbers tell the story” is the theme for this year’s annual report. The National Runaway Switchboard (NRS) knows the importance of a number: 1-800-RUNAWAY. NRS works with a number of people - youth and adults, individuals and organizations - to ensure kids in crisis can access help.

17 years old“At my age, the chance to serve on the board of a non-profit organization with such a critical mission as NRS is unprecedented, and I am so thankful to everyone on the board for taking me under their wing this year as I got to see and experience firsthand the incredible effort it takes from many people to help NRS operate.” – Ben Gastevich, NRS Board Member

10,000+ resources “I know firsthand the excellent quality of NRS’ up-to-date national database of services for youth, their 24/7 trained, responsive staff, and their dedication to the coordination of services to assure that no stone is unturned when it comes to services for at-risk youth and their families who are calling all hours of the day and night.” – Dr. Lois Lee, Founder & President, Children of the Night

It takes more than a village to provide crisis intervention to children and their families. It takes a country committing their public and private resources to youth. It takes volunteers and donors choosing to get involved. It takes staff and board working together to connect the telephone number to services. All these number of people unite to ensure that every one of our callers realizes they are not alone. The phones rang 107,883 times and NRS answered. Thank you for your role in the numbers telling the story.

A kid running away struggles as an adult later in life. This year, the National Runaway Switchboard (NRS) released “The 2011 Runaway Youth Longitudinal Study”. From a nationally representative study of 15,000 individuals, NRS determined compelling evidence that running away from home as an adolescent is correlated with important health, economic, and juvenile justice outcomes in adulthood.

Since 1971, NRS has been just a number away… 1-800-RUNAWAY. In the last 41 years, NRS has handled over 3 million calls. Utilizing a partnership with Greyhound Lines, Inc., NRS has reunited over 14,000 youth with their families. In 2012, 20 board members, 24 staff, 294 volunteers, 801 donors and 369 street team members ensured NRS was ready to help. 18,664 kids completed a runaway prevention curriculum lesson. 116,357 visitors accessed 1800RUNAWAY.org for information. 107,883 calls came into the hotline. And 1,535 chatters contacted our crisis intervention online services. Because between 1.6 – 2.8 million kids run away in a year, NRS is here to help, here to listen 24/7/365.
