Due Friday, October 31, 2008

In general, it is OK to work with others in understanding how to do homework problems -- but all work that you turn in must be entirely your own. Study section 17.2 of Shankar, especially the part on selection rules. This section is mainly about mathematical techniques and tricks, and perturbation theory is a great venue for addressing this. Note: The midterm (Monday, Nov 3) will cover all of Chapter 17 (plus earlier material). 1. Shankar 17.2.6 [p.463] 2. Shankar 17.2.7 [p. 463] 3. Shankar 17.3.3 [p.470] 4. Shankar 17.3.4 (part 2) [p. 470] (see correction on next page). (First, study part (1) and make sure you understand it. But there is nothing to hand in

there. Then work part (2).) 5. Shankar 17.3.4 (part 4) [p. 471] (corrected). (I will go through part (3) in class; but I don’t think you need that to do part 4).
