Attendance | Hour Requirements (cont.):
• Students who do not report to sites during expected hours or have unexcused absences without
communication to preceptor are subject to failure or remediation.
• Students who fail to meet the direct patient care hour threshold throughout the semester/year
will be required to make up these hours. Here is our remediation policy for reference.
What might students be involved in at the sites?
• We have had pilot sites experiment with various activities, but it will depend on your site’s
available opportunities. Since the course is new, we encourage experimenting with various
activities and having the students help to build with the allocated time.
• These experiences are meant to differ from the traditional community and health system IPPE.
• Involvement in direct patient care is the ultimate goal, but here are some suggested activities
to help further the student’s learning:
• Taking medication histories
• Medicine reconciliation
• Medication Therapy Management (MTM)
• Adherence or medication synchronization
• Disease state evaluations/questionnaires
• Patient care plans
• SOAP notes
• Health care screening events (Blood pressure, immunizations, OTCs…etc.)
• Immunization events (some may have immunization training completed)
• Patient case presentations
• Motivational interviewing techniques
• Education of medications, disease states, or other topics directly with patients
• Phone call follow ups or monitoring activities
• Disease state educational classes (leading or participation)
• Patient centered presentations (to patients)
• Journal club presentations
• Topic discussions
• OTC presentations/discussions
• OTC counseling
• Active participation in rounding on a healthcare team
• Making recommendations to healthcare professionals or observing
• Patient health literacy evaluations
• Discharge counseling
• Chronic care management (CCM)
• Working with or interacting other healthcare professionals (physicians, nurses, PA, OT, RT…etc.)
At what level of supervision should the students be able to perform/participate?
• This will depend on the student, their comfort, abilities, as well as the actions or activities they
are partaking in.
• The ultimate goal for any of the direct patient care activities is direct supervision, but for some
activities, it may require observation prior to students participating directly.
Direct Supervision-student performs
activities with preceptor present
and able to help/answer
questions or guide as needed.
Observation-student observes the
activities being performed by the
preceptor or other team member and is able to ask question or learn about how
and why to perform.

Grading | Assessments | Feedback:
● The experiences are pass/fail and preceptors will determine this for each student on the final
evaluation form.
● Both Preceptors and Students will be asked to fill out final evaluations (towards the end of the
block) to help improve future experiences and provide feedback.
● CORE ELMS Rx Preceptor will be used as the platform for evaluations, documents, and other
communications.
● Assessment tools such as rubrics, reflections, self-assessments, quizzes, or any other
knowledge/skills-based tools may be piloted or used. These tools are ultimately used for
providing feedback and helping students to grow their knowledge and skillsets.
● Preceptors can also develop or assign projects or assignments as they deem fit depending on
the site experience.
Site Placement and Scheduling:
• Preceptors or sites will need to submit their availability to the course experiential coordinator
prior to having their placements and schedule over Summer.
• Students and preceptors will receive their scheduled placements via email during the Summer
of 2019.
• These schedules will be available via the CORE ELMS RxPreceptor platform.
• Some students will also be commuting longer distances (45-60 minutes) based on placements,
so please keep this in mind when discussing expectations and schedule.
• If any changes need to be made prior to the start of your blocks, please contact the experiential
coordinator as soon as possible.
• In Appendix A below will find the block calendar for Fall 2019 and Spring 2020.
Interprofessional Education (IPE):
Students will also be required to complete Interprofessional Educational events throughout both
semesters. There will be approximately 6 hours spent during the entirety of the P2 year at IPE
simulation events. These events may require travel to/from specific sites and transportation will be

○Failure of effort or growth within DIPPE learning objectives (>2 "Unacceptable" on final evaluation)
○Violation of site policies and procedures○Unexcused absences○Others to be determined by site

provided by the College of Pharmacy as needed. Students typically will not be required to miss
any scheduled rotation time in order to facilitate these IPE experiences, unless you receive
notice from the student that there is a direct conflict. In the instance a direct conflict occurs, you
may work with the student(s) to schedule a make-up experience during their block if possible.
Disabilities or Accommodations
• If the site has any questions about providing reasonable accommodations to a student, feel free
to either contact the experiential coordinator, or the office of disability services
Inclement Weather Policy:
• Students completing experiential requirements do not follow the school closure policy of the Big
Rapids campus. Both students and preceptors will be expected to use their own judgement to
determine the ability to attend the rotation.
• Students will be required to make up any time missed due to inclement weather or catastrophe.
Students are expected to communicate and work out the requirements to make up hours with
the preceptor.
• Examples of make-up activities include:
o Early arrival/late departure
o Extra projects
o Weekend/holiday break hours
