SPRING FEVER!

That’s what I have as I watch the snow fall. We were planning on taking our Hawk and Lark to the Con-

estoga Chili get together at Margie’s house on Feb. 24, but a Colorado spring snow storm cancelled that

plan. The chili cook-off was rescheduled for the following Sunday, and even though we could not make

that date, over 30 Conestoga members did. It has been one year since I have taken the pen, or should I

say keyboard, over from Marilyn Scott as the editor of the Western Outlook. I will continue to be the

editor at least for another year, and as always welcome suggestions and overall feedback about the

Western Outlook. I am always trying to recruit members’ cars for the cover and “Studebaker of the

Month”. If you would like your Studebaker on the cover, please send me a few pictures and a little his-

tory of your car. It is fitting that Phil and Marilyn’s beautiful 1934 Dictator is on this months cover. Now

that she does not have the Western Outlook to keep her busy, this frees up more time to cruise around

in her Dictator! I am sure Phil and Marilyn are as anxious for some warm-weather cruising as I am!

See you on the road,

Rick

These two are looking pretty sharp! I am not sure what is in the violin

case, but they look ready for action!

Studebaker Drivers Club - Conestoga Chapter

March 03, 2013 Members present: 33 Studebakers present: 6 This meeting was originally sched-uled for February 24, but was canceled due to a snowstorm and rescheduled for March 03. The an-nual chili cook-off event was part of a very enjoyable meeting at the home of Margie Grauberger in Windsor. Six crock-pots of homemade chili were available for sampling and selecting a favorite. In addition, there were many appetizers, breads, pastries and desserts. Margie had festively decorated the tables in a St Patrick’s Day theme that included individual treat baskets with candies and nuts. Winners of the chili cook off were: Renata Kiem, 3rd, Shirley Zaner, 2nd and Margie Grauberger, 1st.

Business Meeting: As no Conestoga Club officers were present, John Murphy, acting Secretary, was asked to conduct the meeting. Shirley Zaner reported for President Roger Zaner the status of legisla-tion currently proposed by the State of Colorado: HB 1071 would identify an antique/collector car as being 32 years old and would be eligible for a 5-year license plate on registration. Roger will follow and report on this legislation; when it will come up for vote and proposed fees. Shirley reminded us that the Tebow Antique Car Collection display would be open from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 16, in Longmont.

Events: The next Conestoga Chapter meeting will be held on Sunday, March 24 at the Forney Muse-um where a large collection of “Woodies” will be the feature display. The meeting will begin at 12:00 noon; food will be potluck by members.

Other Business: Chuck Donkle from the Pikes Peak Club and Vice Chairman of the Studebaker Inter-national Meet spoke at our club meeting. He asked for volunteers to volunteer their time for a wide variety of tasks. Chuck reported that the Crowne Plaza Hotel is presently 100% booked and the back-up hotels are filling up as well. Chuck also highlighted the schedule of entertainment events noting that white river rafting registration is leading. Other comments from Mr. Donkle: North Central Zone Meet in McPherson, KS first weekend in October; Pikes Peak Chapter – tour of WWII Aviation Museum in Colorado Springs on Saturday April 20; and Airport Fun Day in Las Animas on September 21 and 22.

Meeting adjourned at 2:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted by John Murphy substituting for Trish Price, Secretary

We did not have a February meeting due to threat of the Storm of the Century that did

not develop. We are planning to have a repeat of the February meeting for March at

the Gering Library on March 9 at 6:00 p.m. This is weather permitting which sounds

like it could be a repeat of the last meeting. We will have our male members prepare

the soup supper, and we will have a Show & Tell of our favorite vehicle or hobby if oth-

er than Studebakers. Perry & Jackie Meyers are hosting the meeting. Our April

meeting, location yet to be determined will be hosted by the Whitings.

Even though we didn’t have our regular meeting, Perry, Jackie, Corina Meyers and my-

self attended the Counts Car Show in Rapid City, SD in the latter part of February with

our cars. This was held in the Rapid City Convention Center where we had many of

our events when hosting the 1999 International Meet. When Perry & Jackie were

cleaning their car up, I wandered over to ask Perry about a former Western Wheels

member who had moved to Rapid City and was a member of the Counts Car Club. Be-

ing Perry was younger than the rest of the membership and usually remembered de-

tails, I asked him about said member expressing this about his memory. Jackie over-

heard what I said and gave me a look like “What planet did you arrive from?” We all

got a big laugh from her expression.

Studebaker of the Month 1934 Studebaker Dictator Deluxe

I have always loved any Studebaker that was prewar 1940. One morning in February 2010, Phil was on E

-bay snooping around and discovered this ‘Retro-Mod’ Dictator. I slowly walked into the Study with my

sturdy walker (I just had had a total knee replacement in January). I said, “I want that.” Phil won the auc-

tion and now I have my Dictator. The Dictator arrived from Charleston, South Carolina via a private

trucking company. Phil met the driver at a close by shopping center and drove the Dictator home. Need-

less to say, I was so excited. It would be summer before I had the opportunity to actually drive this car.

Phil drove the car to a nearby high school parking lot for me to practice driving its floor mounted four-

speed manual transmission. Actually, Phil drives the Dictator a lot too. This is our show car and we

proudly love showing it off. We like its two-tone gray color and it has that mid-30’s classic look. It is

equipped with a rebuilt Buick 1985 Regal 3.8 L V-6 engine, rated at 175 HP, with a 390 Holly 4 barrel Car-

buretor. The frame, drive train, and clutch are all GM. It’s also equipped with air conditioning, electric

windows for driver and passenger, modern gauges, electric fuel pump, disc brakes, and halogen head-

lights that are actually motorcycle lights. Later, we added a Mustang II independent front suspension

plus rack and pinion steering for our Christmas present to each other. Phil also added a pair of trumpet

horns. Original refinements: Rear window shade and fold down foot rest, ash receivers at each end of

rear leather robe strap, sun visors w/vanity mirror, upholstered rear seat arm rests and door pockets,

adjustable rear quarter window frames, and chrome radiator ornament, and the original artillery wheel

centers welded into 16x7 wheels. In 1934 this Dictator’s sale price was only $745 new. Now, there are

about 15 known to exist - many of the 21,224 that were originally produced were crushed during WWII.

Due to health issues I am selling my 1964 Stu-

debaker GT Hawk VIN# 64V18891. When I bought

the car it had 39,000 original miles (according to

the title). It now has close to 41,000. I have spent

many thousands rebuilding and refurbishing this

car with a large pile of receipts showing the parts

and service done on it. I also have the original

build sheet and shop manuals. I am asking
