Gegraphy

Their population is about 5.8 million of people. Their climate is humid subtropical. It has a total area of 142.6 square miles, 135.1 square miles is land and the rest is water. The bodies of water that are included are Delaware, Schuylkill River, Cobbs, Wissahickon, and Pennypack Creeks.

History

After the American Civil War Philadelphia's government was controlled by a corrupt Republican political machine and by the beginning of the 20th Century Philadelphia was described as "corrupt and contented

Philadelphia grew from a few hundred inhabitants in 1683 to over 2,500 in 1701. The population was mostly English, Welsh Irish,Germans, Swedes, Finns, Dutch, and African Slaves.

Logan, who was the mayor of Philadelphia in the early 1720s, created one of the largest libraries in the colonies. He also helped guide other prominent Philadelphia residents, like John Bartram and Benjamin Franklin.

The City Philadelphia's architectural history dates back

to Colonial times and includes a wide range of styles. The earliest structures were constructed with logs, but brick structures were common by 1700. During the 18th century, the cityscape was dominated by Georgian architecture, including Independence Hall and Christ Church.

The row house was introduced to the United States via Philadelphia in the early 1800s and, for a time, row houses built elsewhere in the United States were known as “Philadelphia rows”

Cultural

Philadelphia culture goes back to 1682 when Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was founded by William Penn.

Fine Art: Philadelphia has more public art than any other American city. Music:      Music began to be a major part of city life in the middle of  the

18th century. The city developed an early jazz  with many future luminaries

Performance art Dance became a part of Philadelphia with the beginning of the

Philadelphia Dancing Assemblies in 1748 .The Pennsylvania Ballet performs in the Academy of Music and the Merriam Theater

Annual fairs and events Philadelphia has many annual festivals and events. One of the

most famous is the Mummers Parade.

Michael Nutre, is the Mayor of Philadelphia. The city hall, as always, is the most important building of the city, that is the place were Mr. Nutre leads the city.
