Purpose of Phlebotomy

◦ To obtain blood for diagnostic purposes

◦ To remove blood for transfusions

◦ This occurs at Donor Centers aka “The Big Red Bus”

◦ Remove blood for therapeutic purposes

Blood is collected in one of three ways:

◦ Venipuncture

◦ From a vein, this is the most common

◦ Capillary Puncture / Dermal Puncture

◦ Aka “finger / heel stick”

◦ Arterial Puncture

◦ From an artery

◦ Not generally performed by phlebotomists

Purpose of Phlebotomy: Therapeutic

◦ Removal of blood as a treatment for various disorders:

◦ Polycythemia

◦ Hemochromatosis

◦ Procedure almost identical to donor phlebotomy

◦ Often performed at donation centers

◦ Requires doctor order

16 weeks (1 semester) + Three classes:

◦ MLT 0047 Phlebotomy (aka “lecture”)

◦ MLTL 0047 Phlebotomy Laboratory (aka “lab”)

◦ Mini semester 2 (10 weeks)

◦ MLTL 0048 Phlebotomy Clinical Rotation (aka “clinicals”)

Includes 4 hour HIV/AIDS instruction & 6 hour AHA CPR training

◦ You will not be registered for classes if you have HOLDS on your

◦ Holds may include: failure to meet EFSC admission requirements such as the new student orientation, fees owed to EFSC such as parking tickets, testing requirements (these can be waived for phlebotomy students)

Once you are a student with EFSC, you will get access & a B#◦ Tutorials available online: http://www.easternflorida.edu/admissions/registrars-

1. Go to www.easternflorida.edu2. In the top right corner, there is a green box that says “EFSC Logins”. 3. Hover your mouse over that and in the drop-down, you will see “myEFSC”. Click that.4. Using your B# as your login, and your pin (1st pin is your birthday MMDDYY), log in5. On the left side of the screen you will see some boxes with the things you have access to.

Canvas will be one (we will have homework there) and “Student Email” will be another
