Fun Facts The “dog days of summer” refers to
the dates from July 3 to August 11. During this time, the sun occupies the same region in the sky as Sirius, the Dog Star, the brightest star visible from any part of Earth and part of the constellation Canis Major, the Greater Dog. The ancient Greeks blamed Sirius for hot temperatures, drought, discomfort and sickness that occurred during the summer.

Quote of the Week
We are not idealized wild things. We are imperfect mortal beings, aware of that mortality even as we
push it away, failed by our very complication, so weird that when we mourn our losses we also mourn, for better or for worse, ourselves.

Foster homes provide valuable information about animals that cannot be determined in a shelter situation. Having a dog or cat in a foster home, reduces stress for the animal, and provides information as to how an animal will act in a home situation. This allows us to find the best forever home for the animal. Foster homes also free up space at the shelter, so we can help more animals in need.
We are in urgent need of more foster homes. You, reaching out to help, can make all the difference in a homeless
animal's life.

Small Business Feature: Providing Big City Comfort in the North
RDKS Economic Development is pleased to bring you interviews with local businesses. Over the next year, this Small Business Feature aims to share stories and good news from businesses in our community.
Can you imagine the same high-quality accommodation common in the lower mainland offered in northern BC? In this small business feature, we speak with Thea and Kurt, a husband-and-wife team that own and manage Arctic Divide Lodge in Dease Lake. They have built a business that works to ensure guests receive premium level accommodation while they stay up north. Kurt is born to second generation German immigrants in Vancouver and Thea is Inuvaluit from Inuvik, Northwest Territories. Setting up in Dease Lake was in some ways meeting in the middle for them. They fell in love with the people, community, and availability of the basic amenities they need, and Arctic Divide Lodge was born. Although the lodge just marked its 6th month in operation, it’s a business that has been in the works for about 5 years. This isn’t their first rodeo in business and their first business venture taught them lessons they’ve applied to running the lodge. “We learned that a partnership is very tricky and can become very personal. On this business venture, we did it ourselves and saved up proper-ly this time before rushing into business. I think anyone in business needs to know who they are going into business with.” Money is not the primary motivation for them as team. Instead, their motivation is making a mark on everyone’s journey up north. This helps them think beyond the short term- a strategy that works great for them as Kurt is the planner and Thea drives execution. At Arctic Divide Lodge, Thea and Kurt are committed to providing guests a clean, comfortable, unique northern experience throughout their stay. “When you stay here, you know you are in the north, in Dease Lake. There’s nothing generic and plain about our experience staying here.” Their high standards and quality control make this possible. To a budding entrepreneur they say, “It takes time. You might not get it right the first time. We both failed on our first business venture. The second time we succeeded. When something fell apart, we pieced it together fast and learned what went wrong the first time.”

History of the Olympics
The first known Olympics were held in the summer of 776 B.C. at Olympia, a site in southern Greece where people went to worship their gods. In fact, the Olympics were created in honor of ancient Greece’s most famous god: Zeus, king of the gods. Athletes prayed to Zeus for victory and left gifts to thank him for their successes. Worshipping Zeus was one of the few things the ancient Greeks agreed on. Divided into different city-states, or settlements, the Greeks were often at war with each other. But even in times of unrest, dueling city-states declared a truce so their athletes could take part in the Olympics. But unlike today’s games, only men were allowed to compete—and they did so naked! Many events, including sprinting and wrestling, are still part of the todays modern games. Other sports such as chariot racing are history. Here’s another one that’s long forgotten: Called the pankration, the event was known as the ultimate fighting sport. There were no weight classes, no time limits, and only two rules: no biting and no eye gouging. Competitors fought until one gave up or died. The Romans eventually banned the Olympics in A.D. 393, which was after Rome conquered Greece in the second century B.C. But the games were revived in 1896 in Athens, Greece, and have been celebrated every four years since. And in 1924, the Winter Olympics were added to showcase chillier sports such as cross-country skiing, speed skating, and ice hockey. Today thousands of athletes from hundreds of countries all over the world compete, all fighting to bring home the GOLD!!
