Principal – Mrs Toni Skinner 10 May 2019
Deputy Principal’s Report I am extremely pleased to join the Kariong team and have felt very welcomed by everyone right from the start. The children have met me with huge smiles, let me join their games in the playground, shared their work with pride and caught up with me for a quick chat. I am so looking forward to getting to know more and more about them. (To all the mums, I’ve been putting in a quiet word to the children about looking after you for your special day.)
It has also been great to meet some of the parents and carers of the students over the first two weeks of being here. It was lovely to have some people introduce themselves to me and finding out a little bit about the children and the school.
The teachers have also welcomed me into their classrooms which has been very exciting for me. The amazing learning experiences that are provided to our students at Kariong demonstrate the teachers’ skills, expertise and passion for teaching and learning and observing the high engagement of the students giving their personal best is also wonderful. I am very appreciative of Mrs Rayner who is helping me to transition into my new role. Both her expertise and experience is highly valued.
Just a little about myself. I started my career in Western Sydney as a teacher and an executive both in small and large primary schools. I also spent three years supporting primary and high schools as a consultant with the Department of Education in Blacktown, Mt Druitt and Penrith areas. I moved to the Central Coast for my position as a Teaching Principal of Jilliby PS where I’ve had the privilege to both teach and lead a small school. Last year I relieved as a principal in the Lake Macquarie area and as a member of the executive team in another. I am now very excited about my appointment as Deputy Principal of Kariong and have been told on a number of occasions, by both teachers and parents, how lucky I am to be here and what a great school Kariong is.
I love the Arts where my passion is demonstrated particularly in the performance areas of Drama, Dance and Music and I also like to write. As an amateur actor, you might even see me pop up in plays put on in community theatre. For those interested in sport, I am a Rabbitohs supporter and feeling very happy at the moment. Go bunnies!

Morning Assembly Our assemblies in the morning are a quick source of information for the students, staff and parents. Our school student leaders do an incredible job at these assemblies and need the ongoing support of students, staff and community members. Our PBL expectations of Respect– using our best manners, listening and following directions; Responsibility – prepared and punctual; and Personal Best – trying your hardest and being a personal role model should be demonstrated by all.
Futsal A special congratulations goes to our Futsal teams on their tremendous representation of our school. The students demonstrated respect, responsibility and personal best at the highest level through using their best manners and behaviour, playing safely and being positive role models who were willing to have a go whilst trying their hardest. The teams were highly successful on the day. More detailed information on these successes can be found further in the newsletter.
NAPLAN Years 3 and 5 Our students in Year 3 and Year 5 will be participating in the Online NAPLAN tests next week and Week 4 of this term. I am sure all students will do their personal best in these tests. Can you please ensure your child arrives on time to school so they are not late for any of the tests?
Year 5 entry to an Opportunity Class in 2020 Opportunity classes cater for highly achieving academically gifted students who may otherwise be without classmates at their own academic and social level.
These schools help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level.
Applications for Opportunity Class placement are considered mainly on the basis of the Opportunity Class Placement Test results and school assessment scores.
Opportunity class test advice The Opportunity Class Placement Test will be held on Wednesday July 31, 2019.
If you would like to have your child considered for Year 5 Opportunity Class entry in 2020 you need to apply soon. You will need to apply on the Internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address).
Applications are now open and detailed instructions on how to apply are available online at: www.schools.nsw.edu.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity/year5
The application website opened on Tuesday April 30, 2019. Please note the website closes at the end of next week on Friday May 17, 2019. No late applications will be accepted.
There are no paper application forms. If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer you can contact the Unit for assistance on: 1300 880367.
If you have any further questions please ask your child’s teacher.
Mothers’ Day Thank you to Kylie and her able-bodied assistants who organised and ran the Mothers’ Day Stall. There were some very ‘smiley faced’ children who are excited about their gifts. May all mothers enjoy their special day.
P&C meeting Our next P&C meeting will be held in the library on Monday May 20 at 7:30pm. As well as our normal meeting there will be a presentation on Bring Your Own Device to School (BYOD) for Year 5 students in 2020. If you have a child entering Year 5 next year and would like to find out some information please come along to the meeting on this date. Sondra Broadhurst
Netball News
On Thursday 2 May, our PSSA Netball team travelled down the hill to play at Adcock Park. We played against Point Clare in the first round of the knockout competition. Our team had some strong combinations, however Point Clare was able to match our plays. Unfortunately, we went down by 11 goals. The sportsmanship that was shown by the Kariong team was amazing and, by the fourth quarter, the giggles had started. I would like to thank the team for their efforts and supportive nature for one another. A big shout out to the parents who reshuffled their work commitments to be at the courts to support the team. Also, I’d like to send an enormous thank you to Mrs Stephenson for being our umpire for the game. The team is looking forward to the Gala Day that is coming up in the next few weeks. See Photos on next page.

WOOLWORTHS EARN AND LEARN
Woolworths “Earn and Learn’ is back again.
It's simple to participate. From Wednesday 1 May until Tuesday 2 June 2019, people who shop at
Woolworths can collect Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers from the checkout operator. There will be one
Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker for every $10 spent. Stickers can be placed in the green Woolworths box,
located in the school office foyer or in the Woolworths collection box, which will soon be available at the
front of the Gosford Woolworth’s store. Once collected and redeemed, these stickers earn points, which
are used to purchase valuable educational resources for our school.

New garden beds
Dear Parent/caregiver Could I please ask, if you pick up your child from the Kindergarten classes, that KPS PBL rules of respect and responsibility are followed, particularly if you bring younger siblings into the school grounds. A lot of behind the scenes work has gone into 2G class growing herbs and vegetables. It would be a shame if these are destroyed as a result of non-supervision. Thank you for your assistance. Ms Glare

Our Week with Lori – Class 2G
Mathematicians in the making 2G students mastering mathematics - hard at work estimating and finding the length of various shaped lines.
Futsal This week our school sent 60 students to Niagara Park to compete in the NNSW Central Coast Futsal Tournament. Our Kariong teams competed against other schools from the Central Coast. Our teams played with great resilience and enthusiasm. I was impressed with the way students took ownership of their teams, getting organised with starting line-ups and subs as well as getting to games on time. Thank you to Flynn and Lily who also managed to help out with the coaching and organisation of the younger teams.
Three of our teams made it through to the grand final. Our Year 4 boys and Year 6 girls each came second on the day. Our Year 6 boys’ team won the tournament, scoring 11 goals to nil in the final. All three teams will travel to Maitland in June for the NNSW state Futsal Championships.
A big ‘thank you’ to Mrs White for her assistance in selecting and coaching the teams this year. Thankyou also to the many parents who helped out with team organisation on the day, as well as giving the teams much needed support from the sidelines and stands.

very talented KH 2018. If you would like your drawing of

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Change and loss are issues all of us face at some stage of our lives. At Kariong Public School we
recognise that when changes occur in families through death, separation, divorce or related
circumstances, young people may benefit from learning how to manage these changes effectively.
We are therefore offering a very successful education program called Seasons For Growth. This
program is facilitated in small groups and is based on research that highlights the importance of
social support and the need to practise new skills to cope effectively with change and loss. The
program focuses on issues such as self-esteem, managing feelings, problem solving, decision making,
effective communication and support networks.
Seasons For Growth runs for 8 weeks in school hours and each weekly session is 40-45 minutes. The
program concludes with a ‘celebration’ session. Later in the year each group will have the
opportunity to meet for a further session to build on their earlier learning. There is no cost involved.
Seasons For Growth will commence in Week 5, Term 2 for Years 1-6. If you think your son or
daughter would benefit from this program, we would encourage you to talk to him/her about this.
Should he/she decide to participate, please fill in the form attached and return to the office by
Monday 13th May. Please also include a brief reason for participation eg divorce, death etc. Students
who have not participated in the program before will be given first preference.
If you require further information or have any questions please contact me at school on 4340 1885.
Kariong Public School is pleased to be able to offer this important program and we are confident
that it will be a valuable learning experience for those who request to be involved.
