NAPLAN Testing Last week and this week, students in Year 3 and Year 5 participated in an Online NAPLAN practise test so they have an understanding of how the platform works. NAPLAN Testing for students in Years 3 and 5 will commence on Tuesday 14 May 2019 (Term 2 Week 3). A notification letter advising parents of the dates and reasons for exemption has been sent home and is available on the school’s website. Parents who wish to exclude their child/children from these tests should make an appointment to speak to Mrs Rayner or Mrs Skinner so they can complete and sign the consent form. The school will not advise parents to exclude their children. However, if parents have particular concerns, the teachers and I are happy to discuss these concerns and advise parents of their options. For more information about NAPLAN online please see link below. NAPLAN online Parent Information

Easter Hat Parade for Kindergarten and Year 1 Parents and friends are invited to attend the Kindergarten and Year One Easter Hat Parade on Friday 12 April in the Courtyard. At 1pm parents are invited to have a picnic lunch with their child in the bottom playground and the Hat Parade will commence at 1:45pm. All students will be making and decorating their own Easter hat at school. Both Kindergarten and Year One will make their hats with their buddy and this will provide a great opportunity for students to show creativity and work together. There is no need to purchase craft items as decorating materials will be supplied by the school.

Sport in Schools Australia –Term 2 and 3 Gymnastics program Sport in Schools will commence again next term for Kindergarten, Year 1 and class 2C and in Term 3 for Years 3-6 and all other Year 2 classes. This program is designed to provide a fun and challenging environment that is fundamental for a child’s growth and development. Each week specialised teachers and instructors will deliver a range of lessons with a focus on high engagement.

A note has been sent home with your child and if you would like your child to be included in this program please ensure that payments and the permission slips are returned by the due date to ensure your child is included. All notes and money are due in week 1 next term, May 3. If you have any questions in regard to this program please ask your child’s teacher or the office for further information.

P & C News Our P & C is holding its annual Easter Egg Raffle. Families were asked to donate Easter Eggs for prizes and deliver them to the office or your child’s class teacher. Thank you to all the families who have done so already. The response has been wonderful! If you have any donations next week, please deliver these to the office. Don’t forget to return your raffle tickets to ensure your family is in the running for the many prizes available. Prizes will be drawn during morning assembly in Week 11 from Monday 8 April to Friday 12 April.

Our Junior Boys relay team represented Kariong and Brisbane Water Zone at the Sydney North

Swimming Carnival on Thursday, 28 March 2019. They swam their hearts out. The competition in

the pool was amazing. Unfortunately, they did not place in the heat to move forward but they did

their personal best and had fun.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Change and loss are issues all of us face at some stage of our lives. At Kariong Public School we

recognise that when changes occur in families through death, separation, divorce or related

circumstances, young people may benefit from learning how to manage these changes effectively.

We are therefore offering a very successful education program called Seasons For Growth. This

program is facilitated in small groups and is based on research that highlights the importance of

social support and the need to practice new skills to cope effectively with change and loss. The

program focuses on issues such as self-esteem, managing feelings, problem solving, decision making,

effective communication and support networks.

Seasons For Growth runs for 8 weeks in school hours and each weekly session is 40-45 minutes. The

program concludes with a ‘celebration’ session. Later in the year each group will have the

opportunity to meet for a further session to build on their earlier learning. There is no cost involved.

Seasons For Growth will commence in Week 5 Term 2 for years 1-6. If you think your son or

daughter would benefit from this program, we would encourage you to talk to him/her about this.

Should he/she decide to participate, please fill in the form attached and return to the office by

Monday 13th May. Please also include a brief reason for participation eg divorce, death etc.

If you require further information or have any questions please contact me at school on 4340 1885.

Kariong Public School is pleased to be able to offer this important program and we are confident

that it will be a valuable learning experience for those who request to be involved.
