Cheshire Land Rover Club (CLRC) is a small happy club based inand around South Cheshire and Staffordshire. The club originatedin 2004 when friends Malcolm Bourne and Mark Birkitt had amoment of inspiration over a quiet drink in their local pub. Plentyof live, eat and sleep Land Rover fanatics live in the area, butback in 2004 there was no club that provided an outlet for theirmud fuelled enthusiasm. Owning a Land Rover is not enough, nomatter how brilliant they are. What people needed was somethingto do with their Land Rover; A new adventure every day!

In truth that thought hadprobably been tumbling aroundfor a while, but once expressedin words the plan to start a club, quickly changed from an idea toa determined plan. Since thatmeeting, CLRC's membership hasgrown to just under onehundred, with members livingthroughout the UK.

helping charity

Founder CLRC member andCharity coordinator, Mark Birkitttook the reins with tremendouszeal. A Series of events over thesummer included memorabledays out; a Navigational Scatter,a 32mile Sponsored walk, and asuperb camping weekend onSalisbury Plain with two fulldays of guided Green Laning onthe famous tank traininggrounds of the British army!

A particularly successful eventwas the 'Run to the lights' inNovember, which found the clubcruising the illuminations ofBlackpool's golden mile. Theclub really has been very busy.

Along the way CLRC hascollected £3366.61 for the Helpfor Heroes charity. On 5thFebruary 2011 Chairman PaulBayley handed over a cheque toHelp for Heroes representativeKathryn Cronin.

The club's charity fundraising hascreated many memorablemoments, and one of thegreatest was the crossing ofMorecambe Bay in 2009 (reportedin LRM). Those that took part still

talk about it with wide eyedexcitement! As one lucky personput it, 'it's one of those thingsthat everyone should do at leastonce in their life'.

It is the club's policy to choose anew charity to support everyyear. The chosen charity for2011 will be the North West AirAmbulance Charity.

Established in 1999 the NorthWest Air Ambulance Charity flieslife saving missions throughoutthe North West region from itsoperational bases at BlackpoolAirport and City Airport,Manchester. Flying seven days aweek, 365 days a year their vitallife saving service covers 5,500square miles and a residentialpopulation of seven millionpeople yet they receive almostno central government orlottery funding.

Although the CLRC has just a modest number of club members, the club has achieved amazing success with its charity fundraising. In 2010 the club voted unanimously to support the Helpfor Heroes charity. Help for Heroes is strictly non-political. Themoney raised for Help for Heroes is used to support woundedServicemen and women of every colour and creed.

The CLRC would really like to growand be able to offer even moreevents, perhaps regular Trials, extraroad based days out, and maybeoverseas camping trips. Inevitably, though for these things to happensomeone has to organise things andbe prepared to make an extraspecial commitment.

Very nearly every model of LandRover is owned by one club memberor another, and if you have atechnical query or problem there willbe someone who can offer words ofadvice - if not actual hands onassistance. And that is the ultimateworth of any club. Not which LandRovers are owned or how much peoplespend on modifying them, the realvalue of a club is measured byindividuals' commitment and theirwillingness to get stuck in and helpeach other out.

Meanwhile the club's present formatis working really well. Fortunatelythe core of keen regulars will ensurethat the club continues to makesteady progress. In fact, since it’sinception in 2004 the Cheshire LandRover Club has never looked back!
