Full speed ahead for SMM 2014The big day has arrived at last. The 26th SMM, the leading international maritime trade fair, opened its doors in Hamburg on Tuesday. Initial impressions point to a huge success: Thousands of visitors streamed into the exhibition halls.

The entire fair site, covering roughly 90,000m², is fully booked. That is an enormous amount of space, and the fair hosts are making good use of it. “This year we have chosen a key topic of the indus-try for each one of the fair days: finance,

environment, security and defence, off-shore and recruiting,” said Bernd Aufder-heide, CEO and president of Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH. This clear structure is helpful to exhibitors and visi-tors alike. Distinguished international >

experts will be present to lec-ture on each topic. In addition to the conference programme, fair visitors from all over the world will benefit from a comprehensive special-events programme comprising more than 150 individual events.More than 50,000 industry visitors are expected to at-tend the most important trade event of the maritime sector, and over 2,100 exhibitors from 67 countries will be pres-ent – more than ever before. For the first time, companies from Egypt, Lebanon and Sri Lanka will be represented on the exhibition floor, and Du-bai is setting up its first-ever national pavilion.

The “Four Capital I’s”This year’s SMM in Ham-burg is built upon four pil-lars, the “Four Capital I’s”: Identification, Integration, Internationality and Innova-tion. In particular, Innova-tion will figure prominent-

ly on the agenda. “The fair exhibitors will again show-case numerous innovations and trends this year that are bound to shape tomorrow’s shipping world,” Aufder-heide said. The big exhibits are what naturally catch fair visitors’ eyes first. Gigan-tic ship engines and huge bow thrusters, for example, are sure to attract attention, along with state-of-the-art bridge technology.

Open-Air ExhibitionThe open-air exhibition area adds further highlights, from impressive cranes and fully automated lifting trucks to container-based cold ironing power stations, not to mention the top at-tention getter: the huge ship propeller set up in front of the main entrance, provided again this year by Germany’s Mecklenburger Metallguss GmbH (MMG).

Seven Fraunhofer institutes are presenting their latest developments in seafaring and navigation at SMM. Fraunhofer is showing a 3D

configurator that makes it possible for owners to expe-rience cruise ships and yachts in real time. Visitors can try out the new software.

In the construction of a cruise ship or yacht, minor details often play a major role – after all, the customer is king and should feel like one, too. Which surfaces suit the interior furnishings the best? Which materials are right for the seats? Until now, designers had to decide on the interior configuration of a ship based on material or fabric samples, or arrange for costly mock-ups to be assem-bled. With its “Virtual Mari-time Interior Configurator”, the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research in Rostock has developed a tool that enables shipbuilders and customers to plan the en-tire interior prior to the start of construction – in a realistic manner and in real time.

Real-time trackingAbove all, this prevents the additional costs generated by poor planning. To this end, the project team con-figured its 3D software with a materials scanner. This al-lows random materials to be scanned, stored in a database and transferred to the virtual elements and spaces/rooms depicted with the software. Then, in real time, a realistic tracking of the finished space is calculated that even shows the actual lighting conditions and surface reflections. Visi-tors at SMM can try out the configurator for themselves and take a 3D trip through a yacht.

Crew management made easyIt’s no easy feat to produce a crew’s service plans. There must be compliance with the international laws of the sea and the shipping company’s internal regulations, flexi-ble responses to schedule changes, and seamless doc-umentation of work shifts and rest periods. The “Crew Compliance Organiser” soft-ware tool engineered by the

Fraunhofer Centre for Mari-time Logistics and Services in Hamburg is intended to assist planners in structuring indi-vidual plans efficiently and in complying with regulations. This means shipping compa-nies can prevent their ships from being delayed at port due to regulatory violations. The solution consists of three modules. The first calcu-lates the personnel needs in the shipping operation. The second automatically com-piles the security and service plans, and takes into account work time accounts and em-ployee rest periods. The third is responsible for reporting and compiles the compliance reports. At the Fraunhofer stand at SMM, the research-ers will exhibit the software’s functions.

Using the waterways economicallyUnder the EU project known as “NEWS – Development of a Next Generation European Inland Waterway Shipping and Logistics System”, an in-ternational research team is developing a holistic concept on how waterways can be used with greater logistic effi-ciency. At SMM, Fraunhofer Austria, together with the Vienna University of Tech-nology, will be showing what a new ship’s hull with greater transport capacity than that of a conventional container ship can look like. Furthermore, a new utilisation concept will be presented for the Danube and adjoining rivers and ca-nals. For this project, Fraun-hofer employees conducted a socio-economic analysis of the degree to which shift-ing the transport of goods to Europe’s waterways can also benefit automotive manufac-turers and suppliers.

Shortly before the start of SMM 2014, Shell Marine Pro-ducts (SMP) introduced Shell Alexia S3, its solution for large vessels with two-stroke engines that enter waters where revised emission con-trol area (ECA) regulations come into force on January 1st 2015. Shell Alexia S3 will be available to customers be-ginning in December in major ports across SMP’s network of more than 500 ports in over 40 countries.

SMP said it was now offering a complete suite of lubricants for all types of engines, pro-viding peace of mind to ship-owners and operators around the world. Shell Alexia S3 is the latest in SMP’s Shell Alex-ia line of two-stroke engine oils, and is formulated for use with low-sulphur and distillate fuels with up to 0.5 per cent sulphur. SMP also offers Shell Gadinia for medium-speed four-stroke engines, and Shell Mysella, used in vessels with gas-powered engines such as

Shell’s chartered barge Green-stream, which the company describes as the world’s first fully LNG-powered barge. The

vessel transports goods on the Rhine River.“The introduction of Shell Alexia S3 completes our port-

folio, ensuring that all our customers will have the right lubricant suitable for their shipping needs,” said Surinder-deep Singh, general manager of Shell Marine Products. In the coming years, the glob-al maritime industry will see more stringent sulphur oxide (SOx) restrictions in ECAs in-cluding the Baltic Sea, North Sea, North America and US Caribbean Sea. Beginning on January 1st 2015, ships enter-ing these areas will have to use fuels with a maximum sulphur content of 0.1 per cent, such as marine gas oil or liquefied nat-ural gas (LNG).There have also been discus-sions among regulators on fur-ther expansion of ECAs into the entire Atlantic seaboard of Europe, the Mediterranean Sea, coastal Korea, the Sea of Japan, the Australian coast, the shipping lanes of Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, as well as coastal China.

ClassNK expands joint research in EuropeThe classification society ClassNK Execu-tive Operations Division has announced that it will join a new European Joint R&D project to ensure bulk carrier safety. The

project, called “LiquefAction”, aims to better understand the physical proper-ties of cargo liquefaction in order to pre-vent bulk carrier casualties.

It is carried out by a consortium of Eu-rope’s top research institutions, including Germany’s Hamburgische Schiffbau-Ver-suchsanstalt (HSVA) and Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), as well as France’s Ecole Central de Nantes (ECN) and the Institute of Science and Technology for Transport, Development and Networks (IFSTTAR), with support from German shipowner Oldendorff Carriers.

Understanding risk factorsCargoes that may liquefy, which include nickel ore and a variety of other cargoes including other ore fines and concen-trates, are widely recognized as one of the leading causes of bulk carrier casual-ties. Over the past decade such cargoes have been linked to loss of more than a dozen bulk carriers. While awareness of the risks of such cargoes has grown over the past several years, little is still known about the factors that cause cargo lique-faction – especially what effect dynamic motions from waves and ship propulsion have on these cargoes. According to the company, understanding such factors is key to preventing future casualties, and is the driving force behind the new project. Dr. Jochen Marzi, Director of Computa-tional Fluid Dynamics at HSVA, explains: “We very much appreciate ClassNK’s par-ticipation and strong support of this pro-ject, and believe that ClassNK’s expertise

and practical experience with these car-goes will help ensure the success of the project.” ClassNK’s participation in the project is the first time it will be part of a major European research program for maritime safety. Since 2008, ClassNK has opened ten new offices in Europe, as well as established a new Survey Operations Headquarters in its Hamburg Office.

“Safety is a global issue” ClassNK Chairman and President Nob-oru Ueda, says: “Our goal is to support the safe growth and development of the maritime industry, not only in Japan or Asia, but in Europe and all around the world. We opened our Survey Opera-tions Headquarters here in Hamburg not only to better support shipowners in the region – but also to better provide the knowledge and resources to address the many challenges we face as an indus-try. With this project we are one step closer to achieving that goal.” ClassNK Executive Vice President Yasushi Na-kamura confirms: “Ensuring the safety of ships and their crews is not an Asian issue or a European issue, it is a global issue. With this project we are combin-ing some of the top experts from Europe and Asia to ensure a safer future for the entire maritime industry.”

DNV GL: one year of operation Enhancing operational efficiency, improv-ing safety, smarter data – these are the key themes for DNV GL at the SMM trade fair. Tor E. Svensen, CEO of DNV GL Mari-time, explained at a press conference on Tuesday how the world’s largest classifica-tion society is working to modernise class and support its customers in reducing accidents and improving sustainability, while at the same time reducing operati-onal costs. He also looked at some inno-vative new projects and research under way, especially the growing trend towards LNG-ready vessels and the increasing use of a diverse range of alternative fuels.

SMM marks the first full year of operation for DNV GL, which was officially launched on September 12th 2013. Taking stock a year into the merger, Svensen said it made a lot of sense. “It was the right answer to adjust to current market conditions,” he re-marked. “Consolidation is all around us. Our focus is on finding the best synergies for the long-term perspective.” Svensen said he was convinced that the merger would realise some cost synergies, adding that DNV GL was ready to share them with customers.

The financial performance of both the maritime unit and the group as a whole has been very strong over the past 12 months, according to Svensen, who said DNV GL would continue to focus on its core clas-sification business since it recognised the industry was still going through challeng-ing times. Meanwhile, DNV GL would

continue to build on its strong involvement in research and innovation, and on devel-oping an even stronger technical support network. The trend towards LNG as a ship fuel is continuing, the order book having shifted from a strong Norwegian focus to a more global mix, Svensen pointed out. The in-dustry’s recognition of DNV GL’s expertise as a class in this field is reflected in the or-der intake, he said, noting there was also an increasing trend towards “LNG-ready” and that a larger variety of alternative fuels were being explored, including ethane, battery and hybrid vessels. Later during the trade fair, DNV GL plans to present Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and the United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) with the first-ever “LNG-ready approval in principle” for a true mega box ship – the 11 14500 TEU and 7 18800 TEU series currently under construction with DNV GL class.

ECO Insight portal for big dataAlbrecht Grell, head of DNV GL’s Mari-time Solutions division, announced the launch of the new ECO Insight portal. ECO Insight brings together the trans-formative approaches of big data – such as AIS, fuel quality, vessel and weather in-formation – advanced data analytics and increased connectivity to enable greater operational efficiency, he said. The new service provides a comprehen-sive and easily accessible way to manage the performance of a fleet – including voyage, hull and propeller, engine and systems performance. “After exploiting measures to improve the vessels, like ret-rofitting or engine derating, many of our customers are taking an intensive look at how their vessels are being operated,” he said. “In order to enhance the way vessels are operated, and have a good basis for de-cision-making, the natural starting point is to begin to monitor the performance in a structured way,” he added. Currently 80 vessels use the pilot application of ECO Insight. Throughout SMM week, the classification society will be holding a series of expert pres-entations at the DNV GL Forum. Forty-one speakers will hold 36 presentations covering eleven topics over the four days, giving a broader view of the latest technologies, mar-ket conditions and pressing challenges of the maritime world.

MTU ready for Tier IIIAt SMM, the Rolls-Royce brand MTU is showing its latest concepts in response to IMO Tier III emission standards, due to come into force in 2016. “MTU is well-prepared for IMO Tier III, be it with SCR exhaust after-treatment systems for die-sel engines or with gas engines,” Micha-el Haidinger, chief sales officer at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, told journalists on Tuesday.

Customers benefit from an integrated con-cept for IMO Tier III comprising an MTU drive and SCR system that require little space and offer an excellent power-to-weight ratio. In an animated presentation, MTU also demonstrated the latest high-speed Series 4000 gas engine based on its trusted 4000 M63 diesel engine, which is widely used in working vessels. The first field-tri-al engine is scheduled to go into service in

2016 in a new environmentally compatible tugboat. MTU’s natural-gas marine engine is due to be launched in 2018. Delivering some 2,000 kW, the 16-cylinder version of the en-gine meets IMO Tier III emission standards without resorting to exhaust after-treatment. MTU also presented its E-Drive systems, incorporating diesel engines and electric

motors, storage batteries, power electronics, control systems and gearboxes. Shipyards benefit from the numerous advantages of-fered by these integrated power packs: low emission levels, low fuel consumption and high performance. MTU Friedrichshafen at SMM: Hall A3 / Stand 305

Three questions for...What does SMM mean to you?SMM is one of the most significant trade fairs in the world. The contact with our customers is very important, and we regard SMM very highly.

Do you have your own stand? Our agent, Peter Gast Shipping, which represents us in the German market, has had an excellent team at the fair for decades. We always assist it with colleagues from our salvage headquarters in the Netherlands.

Svitzer is specialised in marine tow-age and salvage. What are the current challenges in these areas? How do you try to meet them? One of the main aspects, and main “problems”, that we ship salvagers now generally face is the fact that ships keep getting bigger, cargoes more complicated and salvage oper-ations themselves more complicated. And the various parties and stake-holders are always different, and they all have different priorities.

FSG successfully on its way from series to specialised shipbuildingThe North German shipyard Flensbur-ger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft mbH & Co KG (FSG) will present its success story of having moved from series to specialised shipbuilding.

In the past twelve months, FSG has de-livered one ConRo ferry for Oceanex, Canada, two multi-functional project load transport vessels for RollDock, the Netherlands, and one offshore seismic

vessel for WesternGeco/Schlumberger. The delivery of a RoPax ferry for Cale-donian Maritime Assets will follow in autumn.Additionally, Siem Offshore of Norway has ordered two highly complex offshore ships for the global oil and gas market from FSG. The vessels will be owned by Siem Offshore and chartered by the offshore service provider Helix Energy Solutions Group.

Another important milestone for FSG is a recently signed contract with the Australian shipping company Searoad for an innova-tive LNG ferry. The ship is characterised by a highly flexible cargo-carrying capability – it will be the first RoRo ferry in the world able to transport reefer containers and haz-ardous cargo side by side, FSG said.

Offshore Dialogue promises fascinating discussions

The SMM Offshore Dialogue has become a regular feature of the biennial trade fair. More than 500 experts are expected to address the synergies, potentials and challenges of the offshore industry. The event begins at 10:30 tomorrow, Septem-ber 11th, in Conference Room Chicago. Attendance is free of charge.

The offshore market is booming. Not-withstanding stricter regulations, the in-dustry continues to invest heavily in oil, gas and wind energy projects. Many ship-yards can benefit. However, a number of major issues remain unresolved. What ex-actly does the industry need? What does this mean for suppliers and equipment installers? How will the costs develop? What will the future political environ-

ment be like? The Offshore Dialogue, on September 11th, SMM’s designated Off-shore Day, will seek to answer these and other questions.“I’m delighted to see so many distin-guished experts coming to our fair to discuss synergies, opportunities and challenges for the offshore segment,” said

Bernd Aufderheide, CEO and president of Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH (HMC), organiser of the fair.

Liebherr innovations in the heavy-lift and multi-purpose sectorAt this year’s SMM, Lieb-herr Maritime will present its latest developments in the maritime crane sector. A new 250-tonne ship crane has been specially developed and designed to meet the market’s requirements in the heavy-lift and multi-purpose sectors. Liebherr has develo-ped an intelligent system for the mobile harbour range. It optimises grab-filling rates in a self-learning manner.

Liebherr collected real bulk-handling data of differ-ent crane models in a compre-hensive study. Complex data analyses showed that on aver-age only 70% of the grabbing capacity is used, mainly due

to suboptimal grabbing angles and varying material densi-

ty. Based on these findings, SmartGrip ensures that the

full capacity of the grab is uti-lised. By recognising bulk den-sity, compression, and granu-larity as well as current frame conditions such as depth of impression or type of grab, the system automatically adjusts its behaviour. As a result, the innovative system has the po-tential to significantly increase turnover. Additionally, it pre-vents overloads, saves fuel, and reduces stress for crane drivers, according to Liebherr Maritime.

Pioneering solutions – establishing LNG as a marine fuelMarine Service GmbH is a marine consultan-cy company and turn key provider based in Hamburg, a European shipping industry centre. “We‘ve been providing specialised maritime solutions for over half a century. Our services reflect the challenges of the maritime industry: currently, ever stricter regulations as well as growing demands on effectiveness,” said Michael Kraack, mana-ging director of Marine Service. At SMM, the Marine Service team will pre-sent its large portfolio of consulting ser-vices and experience gained in successful projects in the areas of LNG as fuel and off-shore converter platforms.

LNG as fuel: expertise in consulting and technical know-how The shipping industry is coping with the more stringent regulatory environment imposed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The IMO’s emission control areas (ECAs) are special zones sub-ject to restricted SOx and NOx emissions and include the North and Baltic seas and almost all of the North American coastline. Beginning on January 1st 2015, permissible sulphur content in marine fuels will be re-duced from 1% to 0.1% in these areas. Regulations like these have prompted a change in thinking among shipping com-panies, shipyards and engineers. With each passing year, environmentally friendly al-ternative fuels have become more impor-tant. One of the alternatives is LNG, lique-fied natural gas. Marine Service not only provides assis-tance for LNG-powered newbuildings but also plans and designs the conversion of vessels from conventional propulsion sys-tems to LNG propulsion:

Helgoland ferry: design of an LNG fuel system

In October 2013, the ferry operator Cassens Eils ordered an LNG-powered ferry new-building from Germany’s Fassmer shipyard for service to the North Sea island of Hel-goland. Marine Service has been contracted by Fassmer to support the yard in designing the LNG fuel system, including the bunker system and ventilation. Marine Service will deliver the piping for the bunker system.

LPG tanker conversion: delivery of a gas valve unit housing

Marine Service has received an order for delivery of a gas valve unit (GVU) housing for the engine room of an Anthony Ved-er-owned LPG tanker being converted to LNG fuel use. The GVU housing was de-

signed in accordance with the constraints given by GVU supplier RMG, classed by Bureau Veritas and delivered in August. The compact designs of GVU housings developed by Marine Service allow verti-cal and horizontal arrangements also in the smallest machinery spaces.

LNG terminalIn order to establish LNG as a marine fuel, it must be available in ports. Marine Service acts as the interface between the ship and the terminal in this regard. The company manages loading and unloading operations and designs the marine structures of an LNG terminal.

LNG terminal in the port of Hamburg

The Hamburg-based company Bomin Linde LNG is developing an LNG termi-nal in the city’s port for the supply of LNG to consumers via fuelling vessels and/or LNG trucks. The terminal will consist of onshore tank storages that can be gradually extended. It will include LNG loading and unloading process facilities, a new jetty ar-rangement for the LNG operation of LNG

Marine Service has been contracted to de-sign the jetty layout/arrangements for the LNG transfer and auxiliary operations such as LNG piping, loading arm, transfer hoses, cranes, gangway and lighting equipment in-cluding the safety equipment for fire-fight-ing and LNG spillage collection systems in the jetty area.

Offshore wind energy: deep-sea converter platformsOffshore wind power is one of the most promising green energies worldwide. To use it efficiently, Marine Service has devel-oped many special solutions and services for the installation of deep-sea converter platforms.

Germany: installation of HVDC platforms HelWin alpha, BorWin beta, SylWin alpha

The German grid transmission operator TenneT has ordered three platforms for wind park connections to the German onshore grid from Siemens AG: HelWin alpha (HW1), BorWin beta (BW2) and SylWin alpha (SW1). Marine Service has supported TenneT during the design review, construction and installation of the platforms with its team of engineers specialised in structural, mechanical and low-voltage electrical/electronic engi-neering as well as production experience with shipyards. The platforms were suc-cessfully installed in autumn 2013, spring 2014 and summer 2014 and are now un-dergoing final commissioning and testing in the North Sea.

Germany: HVDC platform DolWin gamma

From Alstrom, TenneT has ordered the HVDC platform DolWin gamma (DW3), which is being designed, built and in-

stalled by its Wismar, Germany-based partner Nordic Yards. Marine Service supports TenneT in the design review and design/construction coordination. Con-struction will start in autumn 2014 and delivery of the platform by Nordic Yards is scheduled in 2016.

Germany: HVDC platform BorWin gamma

TenneT has contracted the consortium Siemens AG and Petrofac for the HVDC platform BorWin gamma (BW3), to be designed, built and installed in the North Sea by Petrofac. Marine Service support-ed TenneT during the tender phase and will support it in the design review and design/construction coordination. The platform design commenced this sum-mer, and construction is scheduled to start in January 2016.

New products for lighting on and below deckAt SMM, the international Glamox Group is presenting new lighting systems for the marine market. This includes spe-cial LED luminaires for use in demanding environments as well as innovative searchlights for more maritime security.

Glamox Aqua Signal GmbH, a company of the Glamox Group, presents the robust and watertight TL 60 to visitors of SMM. It is a special LED luminaire for use in demanding environments on ships or in the offshore sector. The Bremen-based company is one of the leading interna-tional providers of special luminaires and lighting solutions for commercial ship-ping as well as for the offshore sector, cruise ships, mega-yachts and recreation-al boats.

Extremely flat constructionOne particular highlight of the TL 60 is its extremely flat construction. The new design is suitable in particular for use in areas with extreme temperatures such as open decks and engine rooms. The sea-water-resistant aluminium material that is used ensures good heat management with a

long product life at the same time. Hence a service lifetime of up to 100,000 hours can be achieved for the LED luminaire in an ambient temperature of 45°C. The TL60 is certified for an extremely large temperature range of -35°C to +55°C. The latest LED technology that is used in the TL 60 pro-vides not only a long service life, high light

quality and homogenous light spread, but also low energy consumption compared with conventional lights.

Preferred light source for shipping Environmentally friendly LED solutions for the entire ship have developed into one of the focal points of the Glamox Group in the past few years. Light-emitting diodes are more economical in their consumption, last longer and are absolutely maintenance-free. They are less sensitive to vibrations and shocks than conventional lighting equip-ment – properties that make light-emit-ting diodes the preferred light source in demanding applications such as shipping. Furthermore, light-emitting diodes are free of heavy metals and toxic substances.

Norselight searchlight SL40 R5Another highlight at the Glamox Group booth is the new searchlight system from the SL40 R5 series of the Norselight brand, which provides more protection and safety on ships and in the offshore sector. Posi-tioned in the mediumprice segment with very good cost-effectiveness, the product series comprises different searchlights that

are characterised by their long lifetime and run-time. The searchlights are certified for ambient temperatures between -40°C and +50°C. The housing as well as motor casing are made of seawater-resistant aluminium and have excellent heat management. So it is ensured that the SL40 R5 will work reli-

ably even under extreme conditions. The searchlights are operated by a joystick via an intelligent control unit. The control panel is available in two configurations.

In shipping, security is key. This doesn‘t mean only the onboard security provided by things like technical regulations, crew training and rescue equipment. There are also external threats to shipping from terrorism and piracy. Piracy is a subject at the international maritime security and defence (MS&D) conference, which will be held today, SMM‘s designated Security and Defence Day, from 10:00 to 17:00 in Con-ference Room Chicago (registration fee re-quired). It is the conference’s fifth edition.

Major successes against piracy have been achieved of late. The establishment of a safe transit corridor off the coast of Soma-lia, through which international naval units escort merchant vessels, has helped to pre-vent hijackings for ransom. Security meas-ures taken by shipping companies, particu-larly the use of private security teams, have also helped to keep pirates at bay.“We’ve found good solutions with this in-ternational network and made entire sea

regions safe again,” said Hans-Joachim Stricker, vice admiral (ret) of the German Navy, president of the German Maritime Institute and chairman of the MS&D con-ference. In the following interview, Stricker talks about the challenges facing the mari-time industry, the conference programme and the importance of SMM, the world’s leading maritime industry trade fair, to the maritime industry.

Admiral Stricker, how safe is international shipping today? Stricker: It depends. During the past two years we’ve got piracy off the Horn of Afri-ca, a major challenge to us for a long time, better under control. Pirate attacks on merchant vessels have been repelled with increasing success. One reason for this is certainly the military protection provided by the European Union-led Operation Atalanta. But there’s a new hot spot now – off West Africa. In the Gulf of Guinea, pirates organised like militias aim mainly at

extorting ransom to finance their fight on land. So the danger hasn’t been eliminated – the hot spot is only shifting.”

What are the latest threat scenarios? What danger zones can you make out?Stricker: We’re seeing that conflicts on land can pose a threat to seaways. Take the Mid-dle East, for instance, where an AIDA ship recently came under fire. While scenarios like this are fortunately rare, they must be taken very seriously nonetheless. Passen-ger ship companies and cruise lines should think twice before sailing into areas of con-flict.

What new security measures are there to protect against piracy, terrorism and acts of war?Stricker: We always distinguish between active and passive security precautions. The most important of the active meas-ures is our local surveillance of the pirates’ headquarters with European naval units,

for example, which makes it possible to react immediately to any action. Beyond that, the main thing is the strong and clear-ly visible presence of security services on board the ships, which discourages pirates from attacking. In Germany there are now six certified security services that provide this protection. Among the passive meas-ures is equipping ships with sound cannon. A number of shipping companies use this deterrent.

What other possibilities are there?Stricker: Sailing a zigzag course, and at a high speed, is a passive defensive measure because pirates can hardly board a ship at speeds exceeding 20 knots. Some ships also deploy barbed wire along the sides. In addition, the constant exchange of data is important, of course, so as to get a com-prehensive overview of a region. To provide this, we work together with the command-ers of all participating institutions.

What are the topics that the MS&D con-ference will be focusing on today?Stricker: The conference will have a broad range of topics. By way of a welcome, the keynote speaker, Sarah Kenny, managing di-rector of QinetiQ Maritime, will give a talk on “The Future Development of Maritime Security and Defence”. This will be followed by two panel discussions. The first is titled “Maritime Challenges of Globalisation”. Two speakers will cover the topics of port security and securing sea routes, and a rep-resentative of the Security Association for the Maritime Industry (SAMI) will address challenges for the industry. The second

panel discussion is titled “Future Maritime Capabilities” and will deal primarily with naval vessel trends. Participants will learn, for example, what ship designs and modal-ities will be in greatest demand in the future. A central topic in the industry is the cost-ef-fective multi-use of ships. At the end of the conference will be a discussion and summa-ry of the main conclusions. The day’s key points, or “takeaways”, will be made avail-able to all participants in written form.

What about participation by naval dele-gations?Stricker: We’re anticipating some high-level delegations from around the world again this year. The number of participants will be about the same as at SMM 2012, again underscoring the major importance of the fair.

How significant is SMM in general for mat-ters of international maritime security?Stricker: As the world’s leading maritime industry trade fair, SMM is a magnet. Com-bining the fair with MS&D 2012 had a lot of synergy effects and was a complete success. Our participants were able to get important information at the conference and then in-spect the necessary hardware in the exhibi-tion halls and make business contacts. The focus of our conference participants is defi-nitely on Hall B8, where numerous ship-yards, suppliers and service providers from the maritime security sector – and special-ised in naval vessels – have their stands. At no other event can one better acquaint one-self with the challenges of maritime securi-ty and take appropriate measures.

First LNG-hybrid power barge classed by Bureau Veritas Bureau Veritas, a global leader in testing, inspection and certification, has carried out risk analysis and HAZID (hazard identifica-tion) studies and also provided classifica-tion for the LNG-hybrid power barge that will begin operation in the port of Ham-burg in October. The classification society presented the project to the public during a press conference on Tuesday at SMM.

Manufacturer Becker Marine Systems and Aida Cruises decided to build a power barge with LNG-driven gensets for use in the port of Hamburg. During the cruise season, the barge will deliver power to the Aida fleet. In wintertime, shore-based clients will receive electric power and thermal energy. The power barge is classed by Bureau Ver-itas, and the risk study was carried out by Tecnitas, a subsidiary of Bureau Veritas. A risk analysis is mandatory for the classifica-tion of gas-fuelled vessels. “Cold ironing”, or connecting visiting cruise ships to the shore electricity supply, helps to reduce air pollu-tion from berthed vessels. However, cruise vessels enter the port during the daytime pe-riod of peak demand and leave at night. The electrical load for hotel operation of a large cruise vessel can be in the region of 10 MW.

Five gensets installed What is more, the domestic electrical fre-quency in Europe is 50 Hz while on board it is usually 60 Hz. So Aida looked for its own dedicated LNG-powered supply for use in Hamburg. The power barge is non-pro-pelled and has a length of 79m. Maximum

power generation is about 11 MW (7 x 1.550 kW). As a first step, five gensets have been installed. They are equipped with a gearbox in order to deliver 60 Hz for the cruise ves-sels and 50 Hz to shore. Storage of LNG is done by means of two 40-foot LNG tank containers on the open deck, which can be exchanged by a shore crane.

Reduced operational risksThe scope of the HAZID risk analysis cov-ered the entire fuel gas installation such as storage area, gas process unit, engine room and ventilation as well as all barge opera-tions, handling of gas containers and elec-tricity supply. The HAZID study was car-ried out to ensure that the operational risks are eliminated or reduced to an acceptable level, taking into consideration the impact of the surroundings on the barge and the barge on the surroundings, for example the passen-gers on board the cruise vessel.

Proposals and recommendations developed The owner, designer, all major suppliers and Bureau Veritas participated in the HAZID workshop. The risk assessment was carried out in accordance with the IMO’s Formal Safety Assessment guidelines. Based on the plans of the designer and the specification, about 80 proposals and recommendations have been developed to enhance safety. Us-ing LNG in ports or in areas of high popula-tion is a sensitive matter since governmental bodies and other parties involved consider gas or LNG to be dangerous. According to Bureau Veritas, the results and scope of the HAZID study by Tecnitas were very helpful to the owner and operator of the LNG-hy-brid barge in getting permission to operate in the port of Hamburg.

To make manoeuvring more precise, safer and fasterAt this year’s SMM in Hamburg, Voith is showcasing propulsion systems and ves-sel concepts that focus on high efficien-cy and dynamic positioning even under challenging conditions. At its booth, a Voith Schneider Propeller (VSP) as well as the Voith Inline Thruster (VIT) 850, which can also be used as a bow thruster, is on display. The Voith Linear Jet, an electric control stand, and various ship models with Voith propulsion systems round off the trade stand presentation.

With its new vessel concepts, Voith is high-lighting the advantages of its propulsion systems in regard to dynamic positioning (DP), combining them with ideally suited designs. The High Flow 4 offshore con-struction vessel, which is being presented as a model, enables dynamic positioning in currents of up to 10 knots and is set to transform the offshore market. The cat-amaran is powered by four VSPs, boasts an open deck space of approximately 1,000m2 and is designed to install tidal en-ergy turbines in high-energy tidal streams. The Maintainer vessel concept, also on display as a model, is similarly effective.

Voith developed it together with NavCon-sult, a subsidiary of the Schramm group. The service vessel will close the gap be-tween the catamarans currently in use and large offshore supply vessels for the instal-lation and maintenance of wind turbines. The Maintainer concept boasts DP2 and permits safe access to wind turbines in weather windows up to a significant wave height of 2.5m. The combination of two VSPs and two VIT 850-200 bow thrusters ensures precise dynamic positioning with-in a wind farm. Visitors to SMM can take a closer look at an original VIT at the Voith booth. With its compact design, the VIT can be inte-grated into more slender hull shapes and placed farther towards the front of the bow

for increased leverage. The system has very low noise emissions. Its noise levels are 23 dB (A) below those of convention-al bow thrusters, making it possible to in-stall a VIT in the immediate vicinity of the cabins. In addition, Voith is presenting a size-10 VSP. The versatility of this propulsion system for offshore applications, tugs, and ferries is being demonstrated by var-ious vessel models on display: the platform supply vessel Edda Fides, the new walk-to-work vessel owned by logistics provider Royal Wagenborg, and the Voith Water Tractor (VWT) Shinano.

Manoeuvring competence provided by JastramJastram GmbH & Co KG is introducing the universal propulsion system Jastram UniProp, a complete power unit with the Jastram Rudder Propeller.

The on-deck installation is certified for any vessel type without a propeller shaft system, the Hamburg-based com-pany said. The 360°-rotating rudder propeller gives utmost manoeuvrabili-ty. A freewheeling propeller with cover plate provides efficient cruising speed. Alternatively, a nozzle maximises the bollard pull. The vertical movement al-lows propeller immersion according to the actual depth of water. The swing-out movement of one rudder propeller ena-bles close contacts to the bank slope for workboats and ferries. All movements and bolting are controlled fully auto-matically by the bridge console. Main-tenance and repair can be performed in swing-out position. The entire UniProp System, including the prime mover, clutch coupling, cardan shaft, daily fuel tank, hydraulics, starter batteries and electric control cabinet is mounted on a steel frame that is bolted onto the vessel. Connections for cool-ing water, main fuel tank, electric power

Bachmann’s new systems to guarantee reliability and availability in automationBachmann electronic is showcasing the ideal solution for comprehensive fault tolerance with scalable redundancy pro-ducts for its M1 automation system.

As the Austrian company says, the imple-mentation of system, transport, and ma-chine engineering is no longer conceivable without the use of automation systems. Increasing demands on productivity, all the way to 24/7 availability, require auto-mation systems to offer solutions for high availability applications as well as maxi-mum reliability.Effective measures against network, sensor, and wiring faults, as well as statistically rare component failure, are also needed. The software-based implementation, using re-dundant Ethernet real-time networking, guarantees compatibility without any spe-cial or expensive redundancy hardware. Easy retrofitting and upgrading, as well as

marine approval and resistance to seawater with the increased temperature range of all components, are further benefits.

DNV GL examined the product applica-tions, materials, drawings, strength calcu-lations and performance certificates of the safety valves according to the regulations of Det Norske Veritas. “Pilot-operated safety valves are especially suitable for maritime use,” Engel remarked. “The certification by an independent body confirms that we have met the tough requirements for off-shore applications.”Surma said, “Leser has demonstrated with this certification that the pilot-operated safety valve is technically state-of-the-art and meets the requirements of the DNV construction regulations.”

Applications in the oil and gas industryMany safety valves are used on ships, FPSOs and oil platforms. Leser said it was the first German manufacturer to provide pilot-operated safety valves. Thanks to their design with integrated tubing, they need about 20 per cent less construction space than older models – an advantage especially in cramped quarters. Compared with spring-loaded valves, they are often lighter and less sensitive to vibrations, for

example on ships. The back pressure re-sistance of up to 70 per cent is important in applications in the oil and gas industry with closed blow-off systems. High tightness up to the set pressure prevents media losses and protects the environment. Leser safety valves meet the requirements of all important worldwide standards and codes, such as PED and ASME VIII, but also those of many national codes. Their

function and capacities are certified by the UV stamp and CE mark, among others. Approvals by ship classification societies are especially important for use in mar-itime or offshore environments. Apart from the approvals of DNV GL, Leser safety valves also meet the requirements of four other ship classes and of the US Coast Guard.

Pressures up to 256 barThe “High Efficiency” safety valves can be used at pressures of up to 256 bar and are suitable for protection of applications with steam, gas and liquid. They allow the cus-tomer to protect technically sophisticated applications and design process systems more efficiently. The product is undergoing continuous fur-ther development. The model for pressures of up to 426 bar will be presented soon. Many different operating requirements, such as increased tightness, high capacities or protecting high back pressures, can be covered with pilot-operated safety valves. Pilot-operated safety valves (POSVs) are controlled by their own medium. The clos-ing force is not produced by a conventional spring. Instead, the system pressure is used, conducted via the pressure tapping line to the pilot valve (control component for the main valve), and from there to a piston in the main valve.

The freshest of fishHamburg is 100 kilometres from the North Sea, and fish is certainly one of the top three local specialities. The fruits of the sea are prepared on the periphery of the port, mainly in the vicinity of the city’s former fish halls. Classic Hamburg dishes such as eel soup and “Pannfisch” (fried fish and potatoes with mustard sauce, typically served in the frying pan) as well as fresh North Sea fish dishes make the venerable Fischerhaus by the St Pauli Fischmarkt a wonderful place to eat. The same can be said of the Fischereihafen Restaurant in Grosse Elbstrasse 143, a venue that has been particularly popular among celebri-ties for decades. It is situated right at the Dockland landing. If you like your fish Japanese style, you should go to the Henssler & Henssler sushi restaurant, run by celebrity chef Stephan Henssler. The Jellyfish restau-rant in the Schanzenviertel neighbour-hood serves only wild or line-caught fish and products from certified sustainable aquacultures that it conjures into origi-nal, creative dishes. The Se7en Oceans is a Michelin-starred restaurant offering gourmet French and Mediterranean fish specialities with a fabulous view of the In-ner Alster lake.

Hamburg – culinary gateway to the worldBeing a port city and international trad-ing hub, Hamburg has been connected to the world for centuries. So it’s no surprise there’s a nice selection of French restaurants. The Café Paris, located in Rathausstrasse 4, has a marvellous Art Nouveau ceiling and offers pure French savoir vivre. Regulars particularly appreciate the diverse breakfast

menu and pan-fried turbot fillet, as well as the tartare Café Paris, which is prepared perfectly at the table by the waiter. Just around the corner in Dornbusch is Le Plat du Jour, another little piece of France in Hamburg and now 20 years old. In typical French brasserie style, the menu includes such classics as saucisson de Lyon, pot-au-feu, cassoulet, couscous de la mer and rump steak with pepper sauce.
