PRESIDENT’S LETTER; February 2022

First, I would like to thank all of you for your continued support and participation during my first year as President of the PSOC. This is particularly true for the many of you who continue to make the club successful by volunteering to get all of the club’s work done. The pandemic has made consistently gathering together for meetings, unwise, but we will get back to that enjoyable element of our activities as soon as it makes good sense.

Our February meetings are on the 17th (LENS) and the 24th (General). The Board will decide by the 11th whether those meetings will be held in person, or via Zoom. I will communicate those decisions by email shortly after they are made, as well as in the applicable meeting invitations. The subject of the LENS presentation by Eric Stogner will be “Techniques for Bird Photography”. As most of you know, Eric is an expert. We all have a lot to learn from him. General Meeting submittal photos are to be from either the January 9th Field Trip to Pasadena and Rose Bowl Flea Market, and/or the January Assignment “Still Life”. Please make sure that they comply with the submittal requirements.

This month’s Field Trip is to the beautiful Mission San Juan Capistrano. Claudia Bennett created a very nice, informative, flyer for the occasion. It is included in this Newsletter and is also already available on our website.

On the subject of trips, check out the flyer in this Newsletter for an opportunity for a photography trip to Costa Rica later this year.

Initial planning by the Field Trips committee for the March 31st to April 3rd Overnight Field Trip to Las Vegas and the Valley of Fire produced the flyer included in this Newsletter. Check it out and put this trip on your calendars.

As usual, this is the time of year for us to support the PSOC by paying our dues. Please mail the appropriate check to our Treasurer, Dan Anderson, at 5051 Linda Circle, Huntington Beach, CA 92649 to be received by no later than February 15th. Checks should be made out to PSOC. Check our website for the pertinent amount in your case.

As a reminder, the PSOC has a Facebook account which is accessible via our website. It is a useful method for Members to; coordinate outings, and share information about; techniques, new equipment, and events of interest to others, etc. Access is limited to Members in good standing (dues paid in full).

February Assignment Creative Perspectives to show at March meeting by Mike Whitmore

Think of a creative and unusual perspective when you look into your viewfinder this month and think about how to create a very different and interesting perspective from which to shoot. Consider a more unique way to see your subject.

This could be simply getting your camera down to ground level and looking up. It might be to get high and look down or to get close with a wide-angle lens and distort the perspective. Here is a list of possibilities to get your thinking started:

Get low Get high View through something

Get very close Distort wide angle Use a reflection

Shoot from behind Underneath Above looking down

Exaggerate details Tilt horizontal Superimpose something near and far

These and many other techniques can be used by just moving around a little before snapping the picture. Other possibilities might include creative post- processing your image to combine two or more images to make an artful perspective deception.

The January and February field trips will provide lots of opportunities for exercising your imagination for perspectives. Take some time after each shot to think about how you might shoot “other” perspectives of the same image.

Have some fun getting outside the nine dots this month. Linger for a while when you find an interesting subject and consider as many different perspectives as may come to mind.

Here are a few examples that I have taken.
