THE COVER STORY

RAY ISON

Ray has been recognised as one of Berry’s Show Society’s Treasurers - an expression of appreciation for his longstanding support and commitment to the planning and running of the Berry Show. Ray’s picture and summary of his activities is on display in gallery of Show Treasures in the Show Committee Rooms. Ray has been involvement with Berry Show since 1948, when he was the Junior Farmer Representative, which lead to him

taking on a role as a Committee Member in 1949. Over the years, his portfolios have included cattle steward, woodchop steward, rodeo steward, the steward overseeing the bar and gatekeeper, For the three years of 1979, 1980, 1981, Ray held the executive role of the Show President. He tells the story that, one year the rodeo cattle got loose after the Show and were eventually found eating a farmer’s crop, which caused a few problems. In February, this year, the Show Committee decided to honour Ray’s commitment to the show by naming the Albany Street gate the ‘Ray Ison gate’. The photo above and the one on the cover show Ray standing at his gate.

ENGINEERED FLOORS AUSTRALIA presents

The Ron McKinnon BULLOCK TEAM on Saturday

The Timber Hills Bullock Team featuring eight Illawarra Shorthorn bullocks is one of the only two remaining working bullock teams in NSW. The bullocks are all locally bred, coming from the farms of John Bryce and Geoff Cochrane.

Ron McKinnon is a third generation bullock driver, and is keeping his family tradition alive with this team. Ron has 18 bullocks broken into harness, but because of the difficulty in transporting the cattle (averaging 800 to 900 kg each) he displays a team of eight at the shows. His daughters Sally and Elizabeth assist and “offside” for him when working in the bush and at shows. The team is driven in the exact way the old bullockies using identical voice commands (unlike horses where reins are used). The yokes, bows and chains are all original. The long handled bullock whip, which Ron carries is rarely used. Ron uses his bullock team to work in the bush on his Tomerong property, hauling logs. Popular belief is that horses were the main transport for early settlers but in fact, bullock teams played a far more important role in the early times of Australia. They were cheaper, tougher, quieter and more easily maintained than horses. Bullocks were used extensively in the Berry area in the early days, especially in the timber industry. Over 100 years ago, there would have been many bullock teams in the bush as the Berry area was cleared and settled.
