For Dominique Lang from Delta Energy Systems, EU PVSEC is one of the most important events for the PV industry as “it represents an ideal opportunity to present the latest products to a wide cross-section of the public. We have been represented as an inverter manufacturer here since 2006 – and with great success.” But not all potential exhibitors share this view, nor do all who participat- ed in previous years consider it to have been a suc- cess. Overall, the number of exhibitors has shrunk from 999 at the PVSEC in Hamburg the previous year to around 680, the exhibition organisers report (as of August 13, 2012). Nor is any significant increase in the final few weeks before the start of the trade fair anticipated. Yet justifying this sharp drop by reduc- tions in PV subsidies alone would be too great a simplification, as some opinion statements by invert- er manufacturers confirm. Andreas Schlumberger, Corporate Communication Manager at Kaco new energy GmbH cites a reason other than the cuts in funding for the lack of partici- pation at EU PVSEC: “As far as we are concerned, there is a cost/benefits imbalance and this is the rea- son we won’t be participating.” Schlumberger even thinks it is possible that the EU PVSEC will again be- come what it started off as at the outset: a platform for discussing scientific research results. Sputnik Engineering AG also informs us it will not be attend- ing the trade fair this year. The company regards Intersolar in Munich as the most important trade fair for its sector in Germany and, for resources reasons, has decided against attending the PVSEC too so soon afterwards. Markus Vetter from Kostal Industrie Elektrik GmbH argues similarly. Kostal, he explains, will be solely focussing its activities on participation in Intersolar when it comes to Germany. Any addition- al marketing measures would need to represent a logical addition to this trade fair otherwise it would not create any added value for the company. With this year’s EU PVSEC however, this would only be true to a very limited degree, Vetter explains. The primary reason for Kostal’s abstinence in 2012 is the choice of Germany as a location again, he adds. “This con- tradicts the original idea of the trade fair in our view, which was to take the industry to Europe and assist the development of markets there.” The Austrian company Fronius is another company who will refrain from participating. Exhibitors and their products In the short time between Intersolar and the EU PVSEC, only a few inverter manufacturers will have been able to prepare new products for market launch. Most will therefore exhibit the same products in Frankfurt that they had already presented in Munich. This expectation is also confirmed by the following feedback to a small survey conducted by S&WE among inverter manufacturers on this matter. ABB Automation Products GmbH will be present- ing its new PVS800 central inverter at the PVSEC in Frankfurt, which reportedly has a capacity of 630 kW, a maximum efficiency of 98.6 % and a European Effi- ciency Rating of 98.2 %. Those who will be attending know why they will be doing so. For Dominique Lang from Delta Energy Systems, EU PVSEC is one of the most

important events for the PV industry as “it represents an ideal opportunity to present the latest products to a wide cross-section of the public. We have been repre sented as an inverter manufacturer here since 2006 – and with great success.” But not all potential exhibitors share this view, nor do all who participat-ed in previous years consider it to have been a suc-cess. Nor is any significant increase in the final few weeks before the start of the trade fair anticipated. Yet justifying this sharp drop by reduc-tions in PV subsidies alone would be too great a simplification, as some opinion statements by invert-er manufacturers confirm.

Andreas Schlumberger, Corporate Communication Manager at Kaco new energy GmbH cites a reason other than the cuts in funding for the lack of partici-pation at EU PVSEC: “As far as we are concerned, there is a cost/benefits imbalance and this is the rea-son we won’t be participating.” Schlumberger even thinks it is possible that the EU PVSEC will again be-come what it started off as at the outset: a platform for discussing scientific research results. afterwards. Markus Vetter from Kostal Industrie Elektrik GmbH argues similarly. Kostal, he explains, will be solely focussing its activities on participation in Intersolar when it comes to Germany. Any addition-al marketing measures would need to represent a logical addition to this trade fair otherwise it would not create any added value for the company. Exhibitors and their products

In the short time between Intersolar and the EU PVSEC, only a few inverter manufacturers will have been able to prepare new products for market launch. Most will therefore exhibit the same products in Frankfurt that they had already presented in Munich. This expectation is also confirmed by the following feedback to a small survey conducted by S&WE among inverter manufacturers on this matter.

includes the following required functions: low-voltage grid fail-ure bypass, idle power regulation for support of grid voltage and real power control for assistance of grid frequency regulation. Furthermore it also comes with the required “Golden Sun” certif-icate for the Chinese market. Ac-cording to ABB the PVS800 with its improved efficiency data and compact, modular design is one of the most attractive solar in-verters on the market. The trans-formerless string inverter PVS300 also has a new feature — it is now

KNX-compatible i.e. it can feed solar power system data directly into KNX-based building automation systems.

Booth: 3.1/B4

Power-One will be presenting its Aurora Micro-0.3-I and Aurora Micro-0.25-I micro inverters as it did at Intersolar in Munich but in addition the Aurora CDD monitoring solution, which pro-vides simple and fast connection to the Internet for photovoltaic systems. The device controls each of a maximum of 30 connectable micro in-verters or power optimisers individually via wireless data transfer. Installers and operators

can set data transfer intervals between four and sixty seconds as required thereby attaining real-

time power monitoring as well as rapid fault detec-tion. In addition, it provides simple access to data from the connected photovoltaic system via a web-based monitoring portal. According to the provider, commissioning and configuration of the Aurora CDD is simple. The radio signal range is 50 metres and can be enhanced using a repeater.

Booth: 3.1/C9

REFUsol GmbH will be travelling to the EU PVSEC with, among other products, the new 20 K inverter SCI, the central inverter 333K and the REFUgak generator connection unit. The transformerless Refusol 20K-SCI already creat-ed quite a stir at EU Intersolar 2012 as it is equipped with power transistors made from silicon carbide (SiC). This extremely hard SiC transistor operates with low switching losses and is significantly superior in this aspect to conventional transistors. In conjunction with further optimisations, the 20K-SCI attains an efficiency rating of up to 98.7 %.

The second new product is the REFUsol 333K. With a capacity of 333 kW, its peak efficien-cy rating is around 98.5 % due not least to its pat-ented “UltraEta” switching topology. As a further highlight, the company will be presenting its REFUgak generator connection unit. This supports the profitable cost-efficient design of larger PV systems with central inverters. Up to 32 strings

can be merged in one REFUgak and connected to the inverter using just one line.

Booth: 3.1/J6

The new transformerless Solivia 3.0, 5.0, 10 and 30 EU TL solar inverters, which Delta Energy Systems GmbH will be presenting at the 27th EU PVSEC, can at-tain peak efficiencies of 98.1 % and are capable of output powers between 3 and 30 kW. The first two of these devices have an Ethernet and WiFi interface in addition to the conventional RS485 for calling up sys-tem data. The Solivia 10 EU TL operates with the greatest efficiency when used as a roof installation with east-west orientation. Asymmetrical power dis-tribution of the two integrated MPP trackers ensures higher yields and guarantees greater flexibility for system configuration. The Solivia 30 EU TL is based on the concept of the established Solivia 20 TL but of-fers greater power. The new transformerless models will be available from the fourth quarter of 2012 ac-cording to company information.

SMA Solar Technology AG wishes to spotlight its Smart Home intelligent energy management system in Frankfurt, including the Sunny Boy 5000 Smart Energy with its integrated memory function (not avail-able until 2013). According to SMA, the system is pre-cisely tailored to consumer control at household lev-el. Technology Manager Roland Grebe explains the company is convinced that maximum possible own consumption is the key to decentralised energy sup-plies from renewable resources. “Intelligent energy management is needed for this that not only guaran-tees extensive analysis, forecasting and information and automatic consumer control but which also in-cludes a decentralised memory. In the SMA Smart Home, we can provide a solution for this already today.”

For its strategic orientation, SMA relies on new unfunded markets as it will illustrate at the PVSEC. For this, the company will present a solar-diesel hy-brid solution for medium and large systems. With this, SMA will testify to the fact that, in sun-drenched regions without a grid connection, solar power is al-ready today a significantly more economic alternative to electricity from conventional diesel power units.

Visitors to the trade fair can also expect new product developments in the central inverters seg-ment and in monitoring and regulation of PV power stations. SMA has upgraded its Sunny Central 900CP XT and made it even more powerful. It will be present-ing this central inverter for the MW range at its trade fair booth. A new Power Plant Controller is also de-signed to offer intelligent and flexible solutions for wind farm regulation while the Cluster Controller is designed for integration of Sunny Tripower inverters in higher-level plant.

sage to the PVSEC: the Memmingen-based company has announced it will be present-ing the world’s most efficient inverters and hopes these will find great resonance among the specialist public. In addition, it will also be demonstrating new systems for optimising own consumption and promot-ing autonomous systems, among other things with a new solar charge regulator that is distinguished by its flexible range of application options.

Booth: 3.1/G1

The leading Swiss inverter manufacturer, Studer Innotec SA, which is well-known worldwide above all for its Xtender series of inverters, will be presenting its new VarioTrack VT-80 (80 A) and VT-65 (65 A) MPPT solar charge regulators. The VarioTracks guarantee a higher yield accord-ing to Studer and are capable of optimising all solar installations. They are ideal for use in Xtender hybrid systems thanks to their synchronised battery management. The DC input voltage reaches up to 150 V. VarioTracks are stored in an IP54 housing, are suitable for battery voltages of 12, 24 and 48 V and have four charging levels. A maxi-mum PV connection power of up to 5 kW is possible. The devices will be available from September 2012 according to Studer information.

Booth: 3.1/G30

Solutronic AG will be presenting its new transformerless Solplus 40 S2 inverter at the PVSEC. According to company

information, it is equipped with two MPP trackers and therefore capable of optimally regulating PV systems with different roof orientations or problematic shading condi-tions. Its maximum DC power is 4.8 kW. The power electronics unit with two boost con-verters ensures an input voltage range of 120–500 V. For communication, the Solplus 40 S2 is equipped, besides the display, with two M12 connectors, which enable networking of several inverters and hence enable direct query via PC. It has an inte-grated data logger, annual energy logger, interference and warning memories. An Ethernet interface with an integrated web browser enables direct, low-cost remote ac-cess. The Solplus 40 S2 is also a compo-nent of the SOL Energy Manager energy management and energy memory system.

Booth: 3.1/B7

Danfoss GmbH will be presenting products including its DLX series inverters for small solar power systems. These will be avail-able in the power classes 2.0, 2.9, 3.8 and 4.6 kW but not until the 4th quarter of 2012. They are suitable for all module technolo-gies and, according to the manufacturer, will attain a maximum efficiency rating of 97.3 %. Its new CLX Monitoring and Power Management product series will also be on show at the EU PVSEV. Allan Pilgaard-Jensen, Head of Global Marketing & Product Management, explains: “There is a discernible increase in the demand for mon-itoring solutions for use with mobile devices that can be easily accessed wherever the customer happens to be. At the same time, such a solution also needs to be simple-to-install.” Booth: 3.1/E4
