Promoting Active and Healthy Living
Why celebrate Physical Education Week? Physical Education Week offers South Australian students the chance to participate in a variety of activities and learn new skills. We are most fortunate to capture the commitment and enthusiasm of numerous teachers, other professionals and volunteers, to ensure the week appeals to and involves many local school communities. Physical Education Week provides an opportunity for classroom and Health & PE teachers to promote and incorporate health and wellbeing activities and events into their weekly planning. Physical Education Week is a celebration of health and wellbeing; being active, learning about how to look after ourselves and encouraging schools and their communities to think about ideas and ways of working to incorporate this into their school in a sustainable way. This significant event is a great cause for celebration and an opportunity for you to showcase the things your school does well and how much you value this important part of the curriculum. It’s the right time for us to stand up and be proud of the work we do and fly the flag for Health & Physical Education (Health & PE). We invite your school to participate in this event, one of the largest weeks in the South Australian school calendar that celebrates the importance of active and healthy living in the lives of South Australian children. We encourage you to join over 35,000 students, from more than 150 schools from all sectors, involving student’s families and local communities, to again ensure this week is the most significant Health & PE week of its kind in Australia. We invite you to join with us in 2018 to celebrate our theme “Jump to it!”

Promoting PE Week at your schoolLet everyone know what PE Week is all about! Promote via your school newsletter, flyers, email communications to parents, noticeboards, and your school website.Use the #PEWeek18 hashtag and promote your activities. We encourage you to use this information to fly the flag for Health & Physical Education in your school. Use the information below as examples of what you can share to promote Physical Education Week in your school!
Over 150 School communities are taking the challenge and being active this week as Physical Education Week (12 - 16 November) is put into practice by up to 35,000 school students in over 150 schools across the state. With current rates of obesity and inactivity increasing there has never been a more important time to promote the theme ‘Jump to it
Walk yourself happy during PE week!As adults, we know we need 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on most days. Our kids need even more! Don’t think too much about it, just do it! Even a short, brisk walk of just 10 minutes can give you an energy and mood boost. If you park the car 7-8 minutes away from school and walk the rest of the way at both drop off and pick up time, you’ll have accumulated your 30 minutes already. Have a look at Australia’s Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour Guidelineswww.health.gov.au/internet/main/publishing.nsf/Content/health-pubhlth-strateg-phys-act-guidelines
PE Week 12-16 November, Week 5, Term 4
This year as part of our celebrations for PE Week, we are hosting (insert activities) on (insert dates). Parent helpers are welcome and would be most appreciated, however please feel free to just come along and support your child being active and having fun! Include what, when, where and who, why not include a photo, what exciting/unique activities are being undertaken?
Help your children to find FUN things to do besides watching television - Play schoolyard games at home like hopscotch and jump rope, make instruments out of kitchen items and dance to the music you make, play some one-on-one basketball or netball. Limit the amount of TV you watch, try having a TV free day once a week with your family.
Be a positive role model for your child - Show your children how you are active by taking the stairs instead of the elevator, get off the bus one or two stops early and walk the rest of the way, go for a walk after dinner with the family. See pages 28-29 for more information for parents.
Spend quality active time together - As a family plan some trips that are free. There are many free activities like a family walk or a game in the backyard, visiting the local park, beach or a picnic.
Why not try this? Get your students to blog what activities the school/class has participated in, link this blog in with your school newsletter and make it available to download via the school website.
Physical Education Week - Celebrating the importance of Health & Physical Education – Health & PE is an essential area of the curriculum that provides real opportunities for children to learn how to lead active & healthy lives – now and in the future. It recognises and actively promotes the importance of health and physical education and physical activity for physical, social, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. This has been celebrated through Physical Education Week 2018.

Physical Education Week | 12- 16 November 2018 13
A Quality PE (QPE) program provides opportunities for students to develop cognitive skills of critical, creative and innovative thinking, problem-solving and decision-making. These skills are developed in association with highly important personal and social skills such as empathy, openness to experiences and other perspectives, interpersonal/communicative skills as well as an aptitude for networking and interacting with people of different backgrounds and origins. These skills underpin the development of self-confident and socially responsible citizens. (UNESCO, 2015 ) A QPE curriculum promotes movement competence and confidence to structure thinking, express feelings, and enrich understanding. Through competition and cooperation, learners appreciate the role of rules, conventions, values, performance criteria and fair play, while celebrating other’s varying contributions, as well as appreciating the demands and benefits of teamwork.
The Critical Importance of a Quality Physical Education Program
Physical Education Week | 12- 16 November 2018 14
Through a Quality PE program, learners understand how to recognise and manage risk, to undertake tasks, and to accept responsibility for their own behaviour. They learn how to cope with both success and failure, and how to evaluate performance against their own and the AC: HPE Achievement Stand-ards. It is through these learning experiences that QPE provides experiences with clear, consistent values which reinforce pro-social behaviour.
A growing body of research is informing us about the links between physical activity and academic achievement. Academic performance is influenced by a range of factors and the evidence is clear that when young people meet the recommended daily minimum of physical activity there are broad social and academic gains.
For many children, especially those from underserved communities, physical education may provide their only opportunity for regular physical activity. This further emphasises the need for children to re-ceive their entitlement of 120 minutes per week of quality HPE within the school curriculum.
Physical literacy is an outcome of a QPE program. This is achieved when learners encounter a range of developmentally appropriate opportunities. A QPE program should be a feature of schooling from the early years to the senior years.
Considering the importance of physical literacy we should encourage and advocate for active play every day. The promotion of physical literacy should remain a key feature of any physical education curriculum throughout pre-school and school education.
Sport Australia provide guidance on the development of Physical Literacy and describe the elements of Physical Literacy in the diagram below.

Tips to include students with a disability in your Physical Education lessons
Planning for Inclusion1. Determine what to teach2. Examine the regular physical education curriculum3. Determine adaptations needed in the regular curriculum4. Determine the level of support needed for your program5. Prepare yourself for instruction6. Prepare all students for inclusion7. Prepare support personnel
Remember…Including students with disabilities is not hard; it just requires enthusiasm and a willingness to have a go.
Tips for including students with different abilities in PE and sport• Be prepared with a selection of equipment to suit ALL abilities. Vary the size of balls, bats etc on offer. A little
bit of thought and preparation will go a long way in allowing for different abilities.
• Increase or decrease the number of passes or shots allowed• Use a Games Sense Approach to sport and skill development.• Communication – find out what a young person can do and discuss
ways of involving everyone with the whole group. Let the group also be responsible for the inclusion of all students.
• Know your student – what do they require from the session? • Change only that which needs changing – remember the integrity of the activity.• Avoid over protection
Make it enjoyable for everyoneThings that can be modified or adapted to allow for the inclusion of players of all abilities are:• the size (dimensions) of the playing area• positioning and number of goal posts• equipment used (smaller, bigger, harder, softer, change colour etc)• number of passes or shots allowed• number of players • the scoring system• vary distance and /or speed required to travel• use textured balls• the rules (adding or deleting)• allow a choice of equipment for the same activity• the location of the playing area (grass is difficult for wheelchairs)• have some students doing skill development while a game is in progress• Ensure students do not feel that it is better for everyone if they do not take part.
Games to playBocciaBoccia was first popular with people with profound cerebral palsy but is now also played by people with other impairments affecting their motor skills, such as muscular dystrophy. It’s played on an indoor court by individuals, pairs or teams of three and by both boys and girls. The aim of the game is to throw leather balls as close as possible to a target ball, or jack - a bit like French boules. You score points for the closer your balls are to the jack, and the person or team with the most points at the end of the game is the winner.
Musical BallThe musical ball game is similar to musical chairs, except players get points and no one ever gets “out.” Musical ball can help children with limited mobility or wheelchairs to develop gross motor skills in the arms and hands. Visually impaired children can also play this game. Attach some bells to a large colourful beach ball to help visually impaired children pass the ball. Arrange the children in a circle. Give the beach ball to one child. Cue a children’s music CD on a portable CD player or cue music on a computer. Instruct the children to begin passing the ball around the circle when the music begins. Allow the music to play for 30 seconds or more, and then stop the music. The child holding the ball when the music stops gets one point. The children begin passing the ball again when the music is restarted. Continue playing until one player reaches five points.

The following information is from the ACHPER (SA) developed Play with Purpose: For Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) Teaching resource. This resource is a South Australian first that was developed to support educators in planning, delivering and assessing early childhood FMS. This resource has been designed to support educators and enable all students to refine their FMS. Photos, illustrations, and observation checklists are featured to support the development and achievement of these important skills. This resource has been funded by SACPSSA and managed by ACHPER (SA). A must for all PE teachers, and early years classroom teachers.
The following three pages highlight some of the useful information, support materials, activities and games included in the resource.
Select developmentally appropriate activitiesYoung people grow and develop at different rates. If activities are too easy players will become bored and learning progress may falter. If activities are too hard players will become anxious and learning progress may falter. The concept that explains the balance between activity challenge and motivation to participate is optimal challenge (Csikszentmihalyi & Nakamura, 2002), the zone where development will occur as the challenge is believed to be achievable. Modifying games to meet the development needs of players can be considered through the CHANGE IT formula (Schembri, 2005). Change:
Coaching (teaching) style: e.g. group work, individual practice tasks, direct instruction, etc.
How games are scored
Area (dimensions) of play space
Number of players
Game rules
Equipment
Inclusion: e.g. single gender groupings, catering for special needs, ability grouping, etc.
Time (duration) of the game, or time an individual player (or team) is allowed to keep possession.

Tips for Volunteer Coaches
Tips for Volunteer Coaches• Sport for younger students is worlds apart from adult sport, children are not little adults• Children want to learn to play as well as they can• Learning skills and playing games needs to take place in a positive and enjoyable
environment• Modify rules, size of fields or courts, size and weight of equipment where needed• Encourage the children and talk positively to them• Know any medical conditions of your team members• Turn up on time• Be enthusiastic• Encourage the children, don’t abuse or yell at them• Practice the skills necessary for the sport• It is great if they win but participation is the most important thing• Encourage good sporting behaviour• Act as a good role model for the children• Conduct training appropriate for young children• Attend coaching courses to update your knowledge• Be organised
Training sessionTraining sessions should be of an appropriate length for the age of the children 45 - 60 minutes
• Explain the session at the start of the training- organisation 5 mins• Begin with a warm up – stretches or warm up game 5 mins• Skill warm up – use previously taught skills 10 mins• Skill development – work on new skills 15 mins• Modified game to reinforce skills taught 20 mins• Concluding activity – warm down, praise, information 5 mins
Remember children play sport to have fun, play with and make friends, participate in games at their own level.
Children also like to have a good relationship with their coach
Children should have equal playing time.
• Create a positive coaching environment by learning names quickly, smile, praise and encourage, answer questions, be patient, be flexible
• Set achievable goals• Be organised• Encourage good habits and sportsmanship• Vary the session – equal opportunities for all, individual, pairs, group work, non-competitive,
co-operative team work• Demonstrate• Involve all children in the activities• Provide instant feedback• Use your voice well – don’t shout, encourage, try to have one on one experiences for the
children, don’t talk too much• Enjoy your coachingWhy not use PE Week as a chance to thank your coaches and volunteers
