Marshmallow is a plant. The leaves and the root are used to make medicine.

Don't confuse marshmallow with the mallow (Malva sylvestris) flower and leaf.

Marshmallow leaf and root are used for

pain and

swelling (inflammation) of the mucous membranes that line the respiratory tract.

They are also used for dry cough, inflammation of the lining of the stomach, diarrhea, stomach ulcers, constipation, urinary tract inflammation, and stones in the urinary tract.

Phytotherapy, Vahid Reza Askari, MUMS 7

People sometimes apply marshmallow leaf and root directly to the skin for pockets of infection (abscesses) and skin ulcers;

and as a poultice for skin inflammation or burns, and for other wounds, insect bites

Uses & Effectiveness

Cough caused by ACE inhibitors.

Medications used for high blood pressure called ACE inhibitors can sometimes cause coughing as a side effect. Early research suggests that taking marshmallow root by mouth for 4 weeks can reduce cough caused by ACE inhibitors.

Special Precautions & Warnings

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Not enough is known about the use of marshmallow during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use.

Diabetes: There is a concern that marshmallow might interfere with blood sugar control.

Check the blood sugar carefully to avoid dangerously low blood sugar.

Surgery: Marshmallow might affect blood sugar levels. There is a concern that it could interfere with blood sugar control during and after surgical procedures. Stop taking marshmallow at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.

Uses & Effectiveness

Possibly Effective for...

Itchy and inflamed skin (eczema)

Heartburn (dyspepsia)

Recovery after surgery. Research suggests that sucking on a single lozenge

containing licorice (Sualin, Hamdard Pharma, India) beginning 30 minutes before

having a tube inserted through the mouth into the trachea reduces cough following

surgery by about 50%.

Also, gargling with a licorice fluid before intubation reduces complications when the

breathing tube is removed.

Phytotherapy, Vahid Reza Askari, MUMS 27

Side Effects

Licorice is LIKELY SAFE for most people when taken by mouth in amounts found in foods.

Licorice is POSSIBLY SAFE when taken by mouth in larger amounts for medicinal purposes and when applied to the skin for a short amount of time.

However, it is POSSIBLY UNSAFE when taken by mouth in large amounts for more than 4 weeks or in smaller amounts long-term.

Consuming licorice daily for several weeks or longer can cause severe side effects including high blood pressure, low potassium levels, weakness, paralysis, and occasionally brain damage in otherwise healthy people.

In people who eat a lot of salt or have heart disease, kidney disease, or high blood pressure, as little as 5 grams per day can cause these problems.

Phytotherapy, Vahid Reza Askari, MUMS 28

Side Effects

Other side effects of licorice use include tiredness, absence of a menstrual period in women, headache, water and sodium retention, and decreased sexual interest and function in men.

People who chew tobacco flavored with licorice might develop high blood pressure and other serious side effects.

Phytotherapy, Vahid Reza Askari, MUMS 29

Special Precautions & Warnings

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: It is UNSAFE to take licorice by mouth

miscarriage or early delivery

Heart disease: Licorice can cause the body to store water, and this can make congestive heart failure worse.

Hormone-sensitive conditions such as breast cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, endometriosis, or uterine fibroids: Licorice might act like estrogen in the body.

High blood pressure: Licorice can raise blood pressure.

A muscle condition caused by nerve problems (hypertonia): Licorice can cause the level of potassium to drop in the blood. This can make hypertonia worse.

Phytotherapy, Vahid Reza Askari, MUMS 30

Special Precautions & Warnings

Low potassium levels in the blood (hypokalemia): Licorice can lower potassium in

the blood. If your potassium is already low, licorice might make it too low.

Kidney disease: Overuse of licorice could make kidney disease worse.

Sexual problems in men: Licorice can lower a man's interest in sex and also worsen

erectile dysfunction (ED) by lowering levels of testosterone.

Surgery: Licorice might interfere with blood pressure control during and after surgery.

Stop taking licorice at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.

Phytotherapy, Vahid Reza Askari, MUMS 31

Interactions

Warfarin (Coumadin)-Interaction Rating: Major- Do not take this combination.

Licorice might increase the breakdown and decrease the effectiveness of warfarin (Coumadin). Decreasing the effectiveness of warfarin (Coumadin) might increase the risk of clotting.

Digoxin (Lanoxin)-Interaction Rating: Moderate Major Be cautious with this combination.

Large amounts of licorice can decrease potassium levels in the body. Low potassium levels can increase the side effects of digoxin (Lanoxin).

Estrogens-Interaction Rating: Moderate

Dried fennel seeds are often used in cooking as an anise-flavored spice.

Fennel is used for various digestive problems including heartburn, intestinal gas,

bloating, loss of appetite, and colic in infants. It is also used for upper respiratory

tract infections, coughs, bronchitis, cholera, backache, bedwetting, and visual

problems.

Some women use fennel for increasing the flow of breast milk, promoting

menstruation, easing the birthing process, and increasing sex drive.

Phytotherapy, Vahid Reza Askari, MUMS 53

Fennel powder is used as a poultice for snakebites.

In foods and beverages, fennel oil is used as a flavoring agent.

In other manufacturing processes, fennel oil is used as a flavoring agent in certain

laxatives, and as a fragrance component in soaps and cosmetics.

Phytotherapy, Vahid Reza Askari, MUMS 54

Possibly Effective for...

Colic in breast-fed infants.

Side Effects

Fennel is LIKELY SAFE when taken by mouth in the amounts commonly found in food.

Some people can have allergic skin reactions to fennel.

People who are allergic to plants such as celery, carrot, and mugwort are more likely to also be allergic to fennel.

Fennel can also make skin extra sensitive to sunlight and make it easier to get a sunburn. Wear sunblock if you are light-skinned.

Phytotherapy, Vahid Reza Askari, MUMS 55

Special Precautions & Warnings

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Not enough is known about the safety of using fennel during pregnancy. It's best to avoid use.

During breast-feeding, fennel is POSSIBLY UNSAFE. It's been reported that two breast-feeding infants experienced damage to their nervous systems after their mothers drank an herbal tea that contained fennel.

Children: For the most part, there is not enough evidence to know whether it is safe for children when used in medicinal amounts.

However, researchers have studied a combination product (ColiMil) for colic that contains fennel, lemon balm, and German chamomile. This product seems to be safe in infants when used for up to one week.

Phytotherapy, Vahid Reza Askari, MUMS 56

Allergy to celery, carrot or mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris): Fennel might cause an allergic reaction in people who are sensitive to these plants.

Bleeding disorders: Fennel might slow blood clotting. Taking fennel might increase the risk of bleeding or bruising in people with bleeding disorders.

Hormone-sensitive condition such as breast cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, endometriosis, or uterine fibroids: Fennel might act like estrogen. If you have any condition that might be made worse by exposure to estrogen, do not use fennel.

Several species of the echinacea plant are used to make medicine from its

leaves, flower, and root

Echinacea is widely used to fight infections, especially the common cold,

the flu, and other upper respiratory infections.

Some people take echinacea at the first sign of a cold, hoping they will be

able to keep the cold from developing.

Other people take echinacea after cold symptoms have started, hoping

they can make symptoms less severe.

Phytotherapy, Vahid Reza Askari, MUMS 61

Echinacea is also used against many other infections including

urinary tract infections,

vaginal yeast infections,

herpes, HIV/AIDS, human papilloma virus (HPV),

bloodstream infections (septicemia),

tonsillitis, streptococcus infections,

syphilis, typhoid, malaria, ear infection, swine flu, warts, and nose and throat infections called diphtheria.

Echinacea is LIKELY SAFE for most people when taken by mouth in the short-term.

Various liquid and solid forms of Echinacea have been used safely for up to 10 days.

Some side effects have been reported such as fever, nausea, vomiting, unpleasant taste, stomach pain, diarrhea, sore throat, dry mouth, headache, numbness of the tongue, dizziness, insomnia, disorientation, and joint and muscle aches.

In rare cases, echinacea has been reported to cause inflammation of the liver.

Applying echinacea to the skin can cause redness, itchiness, or a rash.

Phytotherapy, Vahid Reza Askari, MUMS 66

Special Precautions & Warnings

Children: Echinacea is POSSIBLY SAFE when taken by mouth in the short-term. It seems to be safe in most children ages 2-11 years.

However, about 7% of these children may experience a rash that could be due to an allergic reaction.

Pregnancy: Echinacea is POSSIBLY SAFE when taken by mouth in the short-term.

Breast feeding: There is not enough reliable information about the safety of taking Echinacea

Phytotherapy, Vahid Reza Askari, MUMS 67

Uses & Effectiveness

Possibly Effective for...

Nausea and vomiting caused by HIV/AIDS treatment. Research suggests that taking ginger daily, 30 minutes before each dose of antiretroviral treatment for 14 days, reduces the risk of nausea and vomiting in patients receiving HIV treatment.

Osteoarthritis. taking 500 mg of ginger extract twice daily worked about as well as 400 mg of ibuprofen three times daily for hip and knee pain related to arthritis.

Nausea and vomiting following surgery. Most clinical research shows that taking 1 to 1.5 gram of ginger one hour before surgery seems to reduce nausea and vomiting during the first 24 hours after surgery.

applying 5% ginger oil to patients' wrists before surgery seems to prevent nausea in about 80% of patients.

Phytotherapy, Vahid Reza Askari, MUMS 81

Painful menstrual periods.

Ginger powder 500-2000 mg during the first 3-4 days of a menstrual cycle modestly decreases pain in women with painful menstrual periods.

500 mg of ginger three times daily and a specific ginger extract (Zintoma, Goldaru) 250 mg four times daily.

Doses were given for 3 days starting at the beginning of the menstrual period.

The specific ginger extract (Zintoma) seems to work about as well as the medications ibuprofen or mefenamic acid.

Phytotherapy, Vahid Reza Askari, MUMS 82

Sudden respiratory system failure (Acute respiratory distress syndrome).

Research suggests that administering 120 mg of ginger extract daily for up to 21 days

increases the number of days without ventilator support,

increases the amount of nutrients consumed, and

reduces the time spent in intensive care units in people with sudden respiratory system a failure.

However, ginger extract does not seem to affect death rates in people with this condition.

Phytotherapy, Vahid Reza Askari, MUMS 83

Upset stomach (dyspepsia). Research suggests that taking a single dose of 1.2 grams of ginger root powder one hour before eating speeds up how quickly food empties out of the some in people with dyspepsia.
