Goals★ Make a

afterschool (on the blacktop at pickup time) or at the beginning of the build

★ Going shopping for materials together

★ Letting them use tools★ Giving them a chance to put

something on the scarecrow and hearing their ideas

Design Session After School

How do you choose one design?★ Vote★ Hybridize★ Make sure the ones who didn’t get their idea

realized get another chance to get involved, steer them to the next design problem like “how do we make this part of the scarecrow?”

Materials, tools, and other things to bring★ Bring lots of

scissors/knives, tape/hot glue, and connectors like rubber bands/staples

Streamlining the day of the buildDesignate a design lead to delegate tasks.

Create stations to make the head, face, body, arms, legs, stand, and scarecrow sign. (Scarecrows need to be labeled with school & teacher name/grade)

Things to Ask Kids★ What colors do you want to use?★ Do you think that material is the

best one?★ How do you want it to look?★ Do you think the scarecrow parts

are the right size?

Try to avoid leading questions like “Are you sure you want to do it that way?”

Listening to kids★ Hear out their suggestions, even if

they are crazy.★ Let them come to their own

conclusions about methods that work or don’t work.

★ Acknowledge frustration, try to help them identify the problem, ask them and their friends for solutions.

★ Let them control their timing and design process (within your real time limit)

Remember it doesn’t have to

look like anything!

Scarecrows can be scary and

weird!

Safety★ Be near, but don’t do it for them.★ Be present so that you have an idea of

what they are doing.★ Let them cut. Demonstrate, ask them to

try with your help, then let them try. Trust but use your judgement.

★ Help cut if needed, but ask the kids to draw the places they want to have cut.

★ Bring a first aid kit.

Give as many opportunities as possible to be involved

Transporting the Scarecrow★ Make it in pieces that can be disassembled★ Make it sturdy enough to lie down in the

bed of a truck★ Put it on wheels!★ Involve available kids for lifting and

carrying

The results are always amazing!

How do you make it stand up?

How do you make it stand up?

Time to brainstorm! And build.
