PPRCC T-28 & Big Stik Day Event took Place: 28 June 2019 With a recent increase in T-28’s and Big Stiks flying at the airfield, it was decided to have a one-day T-28 and Big Stik day, just to see how many of the planes show up. Well it was a pretty good turnout on the day of the event. A total of 23 pilots participated, 13 pilots with a T-28, 10 pilots with a Big Stik and 6 of those pilots brought both airplanes.

“Group photo of the T-28 bunch.”

“Group photo of the Big Stik gang”

The 3-hour event was just a fun gathering event, no competitions, no challenges, just fly if you want to. And if you did participate you received a free lunch which consisted of a grilled burger, a bag of chips and a soda. There was also a raffle for a chance to win a 70” ARF Chipmunk. Group photos were taken of the pilots and their planes and submitted to the AMA magazine for publishing. Overall, the event turned out quite well for it’s first time. The club may try it again next year and possibly add more raffle items or other incentives.

“PPRCC member Arms Chapman was the lucky

flyer to win the raffle for the ARF Chipmunk.”

More photos of the event can be seen on the PPRCC website.

Show & Tell Item - I Ben Woofter’s R2 Autogyro

“Ben displayed his work in progress Whirlybird Aviation

Plans R2 Autogyro. Still several weeks from completion, it will

have a sliding battery tray for a 4-cell battery, an electric motor

and a 52” rotor span. Ben is considering the Japanese KA-1

color scheme for final completion.”

Document Protector

“After finding several posted notifications blown off the bulletin board, PPRCC Member Ben Woofer

decided it was time to protect those documents. Ben had surplus plexiglass

at home and cut a piece to fit over the bulletin board. Those documents are now protected, Thanks Ben! PPRCC members can post any RC airplane related notifications on the board.”

Land Here, And You get Tagged! You are a U.S. Navy pilot returning from a mission, it’s getting dark, you’re low on fuel and you can’t find your aircraft carrier. The next best thing, land on the nearest aircraft carrier that you can find. Of course, they will not refuse you to land, but you will have to remain overnight because the ship needs to recover their own aircraft before they attend to yours. The host ship accommodates your every need; food, a shower and a place to sleep. But you still have a restless night, not because of what your commander or fellow pilots will say when you return to your ship the next day but what your jet/plane will look like in the morning! During the 1950’s and 1960’s, U.S. Navy carrier recovery crews had a tradition of “Tagging” visiting aircraft that happened to land on the wrong ship. They didn’t tag aircraft that had to land because of battle damage or injuries. But if you landed on the wrong aircraft carrier because you were lost or identified the wrong carrier to land on, then you were a prime target for tagging. And of course, when you finally return to your home carrier, the recovery team are none too happy to see the new paint job on their plane. They don’t mind the chalk graffiti, that is easy to wash off. But the painted-on graffiti will have to be sanded down to the metal, then re-painted. The Navy’s tradition of “Tagging” finally went away during the 1970’s when navigation, aircraft ID and ship ID technology improved. Also, aircraft were becoming more expensive. Sailors were now being charged for damaging Government property.

Can You Name That Plane? Clue #1: Only two of these planes were built and both flown by the U.S. Navy. With a wingspan of 189 feet, it was the largest land-based airplane ever flown by the U.S. Navy. In comparison, the B-29 had a wingspan of 141 feet. The wings also had access tunnels to the engines during flight.

Clue #2: After only a few years of service with the U.S. Navy, the plane was not cost effective and the U.S. Navy decided to sell them to any airline that wanted them. There were no offers.

Clue #3: In 1946 the U.S. Navy initially bought both planes for $27,000,000. In 1953 both planes went into storage. In 1955 both planes and 13 spare engines were sold as scrap for $97,785. Last month’s airplane: It was the Italian built Stipa-Caproni. Designed by Luigi Stipa and built by the Caproni Aircraft Company. PPRCC members Bill McMullen and Jim Cady were correct! ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Warbirds over Pikes Peak Event took place: 13 July 2019 This year PPRCC decided to have a one-day warbird event because past history has shown there has been a large decline of participants on the second day. However, the one-day event still pulled in about 24-25 pilots, the usual amount. The skies were blue, but the winds were not very cooperative, it was very windy throughout the day and may have contributed to several hard landings, causing damage to a few planes. But that didn’t stop pilots from showing off their flying skills in the winds.

“PPRCC member Milt Woodham took care of pilot’s registration as they filed in.”

“PPRCC member Tom Jacob flew his reliable Hanger 9 P-40 (minus the cowl!).”

All types of aircraft flew at the event; from electric-powered T-28’s, gas and glow-powered WWII planes, to turbine-powered modern jets. And for those pilots who decided not to fly because of the winds, toured the pit areas to view the planes and chat with others. And of course, the dozens of spectators really appreciated the show, the lunch and the view of Pikes Peak from our location.

The lunch organization crew lead by DeAnna Brunson and Cindy Zinke and her two assistants, began serving lunch around 11:00 am. Lunch was a choice of a hamburger or hot dog, along with a bag of chips and a soda. All for $6.00. Thanks ladies!

“DeAnna handled the bills while Cindy and her

assistants took care of the grills.”

The winds continued to be relentless all day, so around 1:00 pm it was decided to call it a day and present the awards before everyone started packing up. Here is the list of award winners: Pilot’s Choice Award – Joe Gilbert / F4U Corsair Large Scale 1st place – Ben Woofter / J5 Cub Large Scale 2nd place – Zach from Pueblo / P-47 Small Scale 1st place – Rod Hart / F4U Corsair Small Scale 2nd place – Duane Zinke / F4U Corsair Military electric 1st place – Jose Coz / Starfighter Military electric 2nd place – Reid from Denver / F-86 Military jet 1st place – Kevin Kinzel / F-15 Eagle Military jet 2nd place – Dan Brunson / F-15 Eagle Congratulations to everyone listed above! PPRCC thanks PPRCC member Greg Moore as the Event Coordinator (EC) and PPRCC member Rod Hart for all of the pilot’s gifts he donated to the event. A special thanks goes out to PPRCC member Chuck Brath for completing intense two days of field maintenance just before the event. Chuck filled several cracks on the west runway and mowed several acres of grass with his riding tractor. The field looks really good!

Please view the PPRCC website for many more photos of the event.

Show & Tell Item – II Duane Zinke’s Topflite F4U Corsair

“Duane purchased this box of wood & partially built Corsair for $5.00 during one of the club’s

swap meets. Within a few months, Duane turned it into a nice looking F4U Corsair! It is

powered by an OS .95AX engine and has fixed landing gear. Duane

said building the 3-piece flap setup was most difficult.”

Engine Out Night July Club Meeting

“For the July club meeting, club members were asked to bring in any type of RC airplane

engine for a group photo and display. A few club members did bring in an engine or two.

They ranged from rare and collectible engines to modern OS engines. Not too bad for first-

time engine out night!”

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Airfield Reminder When two or more pilots are sharing the same runway, pilots must fly in the same direction/traffic pattern. If

you are outside of the traffic pattern, fly at your own discretion.

Warbirds over Parker Event took place: 27/28 July 2019 Fifteen pilots, including PPRCC members Ben Wofter and Keith Davis attended the Warbirds over Parker event which took place in July. It was a nice weekend event, not too crowded, nice clear skies, light winds and temps only around 90 degrees!

“PPRC member Ben (Left) brought his J5 Cub and P-51 Mustang. Keith (Right) brought his electric powered P-61 Black Widow and F7F

Tigercat.”

The event kicked off with a Parker member launching an Estes Saturn rocket, about six feet tall. It was launched in celebration of the 50th anniversary Apollo 11 moon landing. The same person later flew an electric-powered Space Shuttle. Most of the planes were electric powered, there were only a handful of glow-powered planes and 1 or 2 gas-powered planes. But whatever was flown, everyone got a chance to fly. Free lunch was also included for the registered pilots. Guests and spectators paid $8.00 for a burger, chips and soda. On the second day the event held a raffle for a few electric airplanes. However, Ben and I did not return the second day. Overall it was a relaxing event. Ben and I came home with both planes, unbroken. That’s all that matters!

“The Saturn rocket launch was successful, to

include the deployment of its recovery parachutes.”

“The ever-popular electric T-28 Trojan was there in assorted sizes. This one was modified

to drop a bomb.”

More photos can be seen on the PPRCC website.
