  • Introduction

    A child is surrounded by a living, moving, exciting world of happenings, and a child has many ques-tions needing answers.

    Ice crackles, snowflakes plop, smoke is blue, green, yellow; flames are blue, red, yellow, white;things go up in the air and down in the air; sparks fly from pavements; worms disappear like lightningdown a hole; chipmunks pop up here and then over there; sticks float, rocks sink; an eye sees, an ear hears,a mouth tastes, skin feels.

    Investigating science means finding answers to questions. The scientific investigation, the scientificprocesswhat do they mean to children? The child has a question and needs an answer; he or she needs toknow what to do to get the answer. Children may be unaware that the process of questioning, doing, andfinding out will further their knowledge of the subject or that their knowing will lead to more complexquestions. The scientific process is inherent in children and their curiosity. It is an ongoing processfindinganswers to their problems, finding information and methods or ways to test their ideas. Science grows fromobservations and each child comes to the process from his or her own point of view. Children encouraged tofollow an interest in science will arrive at the serious science fair project stage having already done scientificwork. The research and preparation in the elementary grades are a necessary beginning to more intensivescientific investigation.

    There is an abundance of science information available to children in many books, but at times it isdifficult to locate this information. The third edition of Science Experiments Index for Young People ful-fills the need for easy access to information.

    This guide, an index to experiments and activities found in elementary and intermediate-level sciencebooks, is intended for use by librarians, teachers, and children. Experiments range from the very simple torather complex. The nature and range of the projects and activities will assist children in the experience ofscience from the primary grades upward.

    The purpose of the index is to guide children in finding information on science experiments for in-vestigative projects, science projects for science fairs, and science projects for those children who want tofind answers and are curious to develop methods to test their own ideas.

    Science experiments will never disappear from our schools as long as we have curious, motivatedchildren eager to find out something. This index guides children to many science experiments but, in particu-lar, helps them explore their ideas to find the right experiment for them.

    We can only lead children. I hope this science index provides a pathway for each child who is searching.
