This Sunday is the Epiphany of the Lord and in the gospel we hear the story of the magi from the East who make the long journey to pay hom-age to the newborn king who was born poor in a stable. The Epiphany

marks the end of the Christmas season. Let me say thank you to everyone who helped make our Christ-mas celebrations go so well, including the volunteers who helped to decorate the church, set up our mag-nificent Christmas tree (which was donated), and all who helped serve our multiple Christmas masses. We have some exciting news to announce for the new year – we will be having a parish pilgrimage to Italy in September 2017. The pilgrimage includes time in Rome, Florence, and Assisi, the home of our patron St. Francis. We will be having an information night on Saturday, January 28 after the 5:30pm mass, in Anthony Hall Founders Room. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet fellow SFA parishioners and to see some of the magnificent sites of three beautiful cities in Italy. Interested? Please see page 9 in this bulletin for more information. Blessings on your week!

A s a way to continue our efforts to grow in understanding and in bonds of friendship with the Muslim community, please join us to break bread with the Islamic Association in Raleigh.

We invite you for a tour, a lunch get-together with other Muslims in the community, and a Q&A with the Imam (religious leader) of the mosque Muhammed Abu Taleb on Saturday January 14, 2017 from 11:00am to 2:30pm.

This call for understanding, mercy, and peacemaking is especially needed today in time of increased social anxiety, fear, and ignorance about Islam, and even violence against our Muslim brothers and sisters in faith. After our community conversation about Islam and our Muslim neighbors in October, many have expressed interest in this opportunity for a visit to the mosque and continued dialogue. We believe that these experiences of dialogue and increased understanding help move us closer to the possibility of peace in our communities and world.

We hope you will join us! The event is free but we ask that you register at www.stfrancisraleigh.org/interfaith where you can find more information and a link to register.

M ental illness is one of those things people don’t talk about. Some mental illnesses are caused in response to a tragic event, like PTSD. Some

are caused by the environment, like fetal alcohol syndrome; and some are genetic and some are caused by chemical imbalances. And sometimes, it just is.

Symptoms range from mild and easily controlled with medication and/or counseling all the way to profound and severe behavior that is controlled in a hospital set-ting. Sometimes it’s temporary such as depression fol-lowing the loss of a loved one or a job or a medical is-sue, and sometimes it’s permanent. Treatments have ranged from drilling holes in the skull, to lobotomies, to electroshock therapy, to talk therapy and medications.

When I worked at a behavioral hospital, I was aston-ished that we had inpatients as young as five years old. Some had been found trying to harm the family pets or siblings. Some succeeded. You wonder what’s going on that would lead a child to some of these behaviors. They are sometimes too young or too sick to tell you.

Mental illness has been called the “no-casserole” illness. People who would never think twice to ask how a cancer patient is doing would never ask how the bipo-lar patient is doing on the new meds. Medical science has made it possible for more people who struggle with certain mental illnesses to hold down jobs, raise fami-lies and make a positive contribution to the community. But we still don’t talk about mental conditions in near the same way we talk about physical conditions.

Let’s Give Them Something to Talk About!

This reluctance to talk about mental health has con-sequences – on a personal level, on a medical level, on a political level, and on a societal level. On a per-sonal level, the silence can be deafening when you’re struggling. If you feel shame when acknowledging a mental illness, you may resist treatment that could make a difference. The condition may be much worse when you finally receive treatment and much harder to stablilize. On a medical level, mental illnesses, in some cases, are treated in separate facilities than physical illnesses. It can almost become the “chicken and egg” debate about which condition is most im-portant and with no regard to how the two illnesses (and the treatments) affect each other! On a political level, if there’s little discussion about how mental ill-ness is affecting people, there’s little incentive to fund treatment. If there’s little discussion about treatment, there’s not much of a platform to announce when there is effective treatment. When there’s not much talk about what mental illness really is, how it really affects ‘normal’ people, how treatment is available, the most frequent way to hear about mental illness is on the news when there’s been a tragic event.

Let’s do something about the silence. Let’s give our-selves something to talk about. Let’s get educated. Let’s offer a platform for people to share their experi-ences. Let’s help people feel that they are welcomed and valued here – regardless of their struggles. For more information and to register to attend, please visit http://www.stfrancisraleigh.org/mental-health-events-registration/.

gage in age-appropriate faith for-mation, and monthly service oppor-tunities. Current research supports the importance of high-quality early education programs in the future success of children in their educa-tion, career options, and overall health. St. Francis Preschool strives to provide such an experi-ence for students. Through the use of the Diocese of Raleigh Early Childhood Curriculum, we work to improve skills in all areas of a child’s development: spiritual; so-cial, emotional; physical; and intel-lectual. Investing in early childhood education now can bring high re-turns in the future!

D id you know there was a fourth Magi? I’ve been re-reading

homilies from our very own Fr. David and read one of his Epiphany homilies. Let me share.

There is an Arabian legend about Artaba, the fourth magi. Like the other Magi, she sees the star in the sky and she hears about the newborn king. She brings her gifts - a sap-phire, a ruby, and a pearl and sets out on a journey to find him. On her path to meet the others, Artaba meets a suffer-ing man with no food. She turns aside from seeking the others for just one moment to sell one of her jewels and help the man eat. This side track causes her to miss the others so she continues on alone fol-lowing the now dimming star.

Her solo journey lasts 33 years. In this time, she meets so many suffering in need. She attends to all she meets and sells another jewel to fund the way. Her journey finally takes her to Jerusalem where she hears about a man about to crucified. She wonders if this is the newborn king she’s been searching for as the star is almost gone. She joins the

Where is the fourth? crowds and presses forward. She sees a group of soldiers dragging a young woman into slavery. The woman begs Artaba for help. Just as Artaba sells her last pearl to save the woman, Artaba feels a blow to her head. As the young women holds the dying Artaba in her arms, she hears Artaba speak: “Not so, my Lord, for when did I see you? When did I feed you, when did I cloth you, when did I take you in?” Just then, a calm, radiant light shines upon her face like a brightly shining star.

Artaba’s journey ended. She journeyed to the light all this time for the birth of child or the death of herself. Or both? She never met the newborn king. Or did she? She had no gifts to give. Or did she?

In our journey to meet the newborn King, are we seeing Him along the way? Are we taking the sidetracks in our journey? Are we using our gifts when the needs come into our path?

Join our Youth Basketball league on their “side track” to help the Migrant Ministry with a materials donations drive. www.stfrancisraleigh.org/migrant-ministry-2/.
