It is a good thing that there was only one meeng in July because our members were so
busy doing so many different things! Certainly, the Pilot Internaonal Convenon in New
Orleans was at the center of many of our acvies. Sylvia Popowski, Pat Masse, Shirley
Pyle, Diane Dunn, Leanne Hansard, and I are sll digesng (literally!) the many
experiences we had with our Pilot colleagues all over the globe. So much is happening in
the organizaon to keep us current with the 2000 decade.
Our only meeng in July saw us installing two great members. Tony Welch, a familiar
voice in local broadcasng (and Diane Welch’s other half!), will assist us with our
connecons to the media. Laura Yard, M.D. gives us a wealth of knowledge regarding
wellness and addicons. Both are valuable addions to our membership.
We are all gearing up for our Chinese Aucon on 8/27. Remember, members receive 10
extra raffle ckets for each guest they bring. Please bring your great items to the next
meeng on 8/13. You can also contact chairs Moe Durham, Marsha Lewis, and Marsha
Douglas for pick-up.
Our Budget and Plans of Work have been signed, sealed, and approved. We owe
tremendous gratude to Diane Welch and Alonia Gainous for all their hard work and
tweaking. We are truly fortunate to have these number friendly women in our Club.
Do you think we can ever thank Diane Welch enough for the HOURS of work she has put
into our yearbook? Thanks to her and the efforts of Sylvia Popowski, Pat Masse, and Di-
ane Dunn, our yearbook is going to be an edion that proudly reflects our
membership and work. Remember to get those ads to these ladies ASAP to insure your
spot.
We are poised for a dynamic and huge fundraising and fun-raising year. It is an
especially excing me to be a Pilot. More than ever, it is a parcularly wonderful me
to be a member of the Pilot Club of the Halifax Area.

someone in the club who would love to have what you bring.
Bring your items to the Aug. 13th mee?ng.
The auc?on is Aug. 27th, at our regular mee?ng
?me and place. Oh, and by the way. Bring a
poten?al Pilot, pay for her lunch, and you will get
10 free ?ckets for the auc?on. See you there!

Keeping Up with our Scholarship Girls…. We are wai?ng with baited breath to learn if Pam Ingle*
will be in our Pilot House in Gainesville. It would be great
for both Julia and Pam to be together. When we went to
Gainesville in June to help bring Julia and brother, Bill (in
the Williams House) home for the summer I was proud to
show off our house to hubby, Tony. Our girls are the envy
of the other houses because we (Pilots) take such good care
of them and provide for their needs.
Of all of the things we do in Pilot, this is foremost in my
mind as the project that impacts many lives directly. Our
students are the very best of the best and have the
opportunity to realize their dreams and desires because of
our commitment to their educa?on.

Greetings Pilots... I am excited to serve as
Treasurer for the 2013-2014 year. I pray I can fill Diane Welch’s
shoes. Well, hopefully at least one shoe. The year has started off with a bang! The Budget for 2013-2014 has been approved, thanks to the hard work and dedication of each of you. I greatly appreciate all the time everyone has dedicated to achieve this
accomplishment. I am looking forward to our first fundraiser for the year.
The Chinese Auction scheduled for August 27th; I am sure it will be a fantastic and successful fundraising event. Remember, you can earn 10 extra tickets for each guest you bring to this event. Thank you in advance to every Pilot for your support.

The Pilot Club of the Halifax Area has received notification that Richard Rogers has been selected to receive a Pilot International Scholarship, for $1,500 to continue his studies with dual majors of Biology & Psychology at Florida State University. This dual major allows Richard to be involved
on both sides of the brain related disorder equation. With his Neuroscience research, he is helping identify what is injured,
missing or has excess of in the brain, or the “cause” of the disability. On the Psychology side, he understands the
“effects” of brain disorders. Richard’s plans are to obtain his PhD in Neuroscience, and to teach and train others, while continuing his research of the brain and its behavior, and
sharing his knowledge with others. Richard has an outstanding academic record and GPA. Our club was honored to
recommend him for this award. His mother, club President JoEllen Salce Rogers has many reasons to
be very proud of her son.

Pilot International Foundation Scholarship Recipient Richard Salce Rogers
The Pilot Club of the Halifax Area, especially Shirley Pyle and Becky Nero-Wall, has the gratitude of the
entire Salce Rogers family for supporting Richard’s application for this scholarship. Thanks to you, Richard was awarded $1,500 to
continue his neuroscience pursuits at Florida State University. Since he applied for this scholarship, he has become a neuroscience lab assistant, secretary of the
undergraduate neuroscience club, and a contributor to a neuroscience journal. His efforts over the next year will continue to further
knowledge in the brain field. My family thanks you for your support
and confidence. JoEllen Salce Rogers
