The music department is always active during the holiday season, and this year is no exception! We hope you will enjoy the various offerings, and come to enjoy the music we have prepared for you.

You have two choices on December 4, the Second Sunday of Advent. Dr. Sullivan will lead worship at 8:30 am. That service will be our usual service of Word and Sacrament, and his sermon that morning will focus on the subject of “Inward Peace.” There will be a different format at 11:00 a.m. Instead of Word and Sacrament, the Chancel Choir will perform the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah, a holiday favorite.

On the Third Sunday of Advent, December 11, Dr. Sullivan will preach on the text in the first chapter

December Advent & Christmas Worship:

On the Fourth Sunday of Advent, December 18, our Parish Associate, the Rev. Heather Sigler, will preach. The Service of Lessons and Carols will take place that afternoon at 4:00 p.m. In scripture and music we will hear the story of God’s gift of salvation to the world. A dinner follows that service. You can buy tickets for the dinner at the Welcome Center in the Gathering Place.

Christmas Eve features two worship services. A new twist

piece has become a holiday tradition for many, and there are as many possible ways to experience this work as there are imaginative musicians to prepare it … I’ve even heard a rock version of it, and it is surprisingly compelling. Our performance will be very much in touch with the original intent of the composer. We are a small, but able chorus, with a small but able orchestra to accompany and four wonderful soloists. That’s about all you need for a stirring rendition. The Choir, of course, is the central focus of this oratorio, with its wonderful choruses that everyone knows and enjoys. In addition, our soloists Courtney Gray, Ray Weatherell, our new tenor, and John Sharpe add their special touches to the solos, along with Jonathan Hudson, who returns to sing the alto solos as originally intended … in the counter-tenor range! The choir is enjoying the preparations as is their director. We hope you will make December 4 a special Sunday and come to early worship to hear a fine sermon and receive the Sacrament and then stick around for Church School and Messiah … a great way to start December!

Later in the month … December 18 at 4:00 p.m., the Choir and Handbell Choir present A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols in the manner of King’s College, Cambridge, England. This is one of the most beloved Christmas services in the English-speaking world. Assembled originally by the Very Rev. Edward White Benson, then Bishop of Truro (later the Dean of King’s and eventually Archbishop of Canterbury) it has grown from a simple service of readings and carol singing, into a world-wide celebration of the holiday with the original lessons still intact along with the bidding prayer which opens the service. Musicians from Kings Chapel, and churches and cathedrals large and small have added magnificent carol settings for choir as well as the traditional singing of the congregation to adorn this simple liturgy. This year the choir sings carols by John Rutter, Peter Warlock, Andrew Carter, George Guest, Richard Lakey and Stephen Cleobury as part of the celebration. Please join us at 4:00 in the afternoon of December 18.

In addition, the Choir, Handbells, Youth Handbells and Children’s Choirs will all be singing and playing during the entire Advent Season. Come and worship, come and worship … worship Christ the Newborn King! … here at Third and Pine.

Dedication of Restored Pine Street Treasures

The concept of restoration is a major theme throughout the Bible. It can be used to mean turning back to God. It can mean being made whole. It can mean being made complete. It can refer to communities and their treasures. Restoration implies that having once been perfect, we have wandered far from Eden; and wandering away from God has taken its toll. We have become tarnished, frayed and worn.

On January 8th, we will re-dedicate to the Glory of God, the restoration of several Pine Street artifacts that were once whole and pristine. These artifacts include a Communion ewer (pitcher) and plates believed to have been new in the founding era of the Church. They are engraved with the church’s original name, “The Presbyterian Church of Harrisburg.” Restoration included re-silvering the plates which were badly deteriorated; and repairing the broken lid on the ewer, re-silvering the lid and polishing the ewer. The restoration was accomplished by Trio Silversmiths in Philadelphia. The restoration of the Communion ware was made possible by a gift from Jacqueline, Charles, and John Young, Jr. The gift was made in memory of their parents, John W. and Mary R. Young

The second item is more creation than restoration. The Communion table in the front of the sanctuary was designed by the architectural firm of Cram and Ferguson for the 1926 redesign of Pine Street Church. At some time in the more recent past, a plywood top was placed on the original Ralph Adams Cram table to accommodate the communion ware and several Pastors standing behind the table during worship. At the request of the Worship and Arts Committee, George Kunkle, longtime Pine Street member and craftsman, designed and built a new top that is more in keeping with the design of the original table, including decorative molding. George built the top by hand, using quarter sawn oak which was stained to match the original table. Planing of the table-top was done at a discount by Middletown Lumber Co. Finally, the finish was sealed and a hand-rubbed wax finish applied by George and Eileen Kunkle. The creation of the new Communion table top was made possible by a gift from Richard and Arletta Gregg. The gift was made in memory of Clarence R. and Mabel E. Gregg; and Ira L. and Grace I. Stoudt.

Pine Streeters Lend A Handby Debbie Olson

Within two days of the flooding in October, Lend A Hand (LAH) crews were mobilized, providing remediation and reconstruction services. Since then LAH has worked in Dover, York city, Manheim, Middlesex Township, Lewisberry, Grantham, Marysville, Duncannon, Dauphin, New Cumberland, Harrisburg city, Colonial Park, Hummelstown, Hershey, Palmyra, Lebanon city, Annville, Jonestown, Cleona, Schafferstown, and Frederickburg.

The Presbytery of Carlisle opened two dormitory sites to house volunteers from other areas – Pine Street Church was one of those sites (at the Boyd building).

To date, LAH has worked on 228 homes and has saved homeowners and local jurisdictions at least $2,500,000. They have met with homeowners, listened to their stories, prayed with them, consoled them, and through their efforts, given them hope for the future.

Many Pine Street members have helped in this effort: Bill Bauer has been instrumental in coordinating all efforts; Pam Bauer, Betty Rader, and Mary Daub helped in the LAH office, taking phone calls, etc.; Joanne Alwine, Betty Rader, and Carol Putt helped with the dormitory setup and meal provision; Bill Mader and Marty Gruver helped to get vans available and supplied; Roger Olson and George Kunkle assessed needs of homeowners; Debbie Olson and Roger Olson worked to help the homeowners ‘clean up’ and recover. (Apologies if I’ve missed anyone.) THE BOTTOM LINE is that Pine Streeters rose to the challenge – AGAIN.

THANKS TO ALL WHO HAVE GIVEN OF THEIR TIME to help those in need. Isn’t that what Christ asks of us???

Many of you are aware that Pine Street has been making an intentional effort to tighten its belt and reign in unnecessary spending. Russell formed a budget taskforce committee which did an amazing job discerning the needs of the church and developing a balanced budget that fits within our means. The taskforce examined every facet of the budget to ascertain how we could still do our ministry well, while saving money and helping our bottom line. One of those areas was this publication, Pine Street Life.

Pine Street Life has been a staple of this church for decades and we don’t want that to change. What we do want to change is the method by which it is delivered to your home. This past year, we embarked in a bold new direction in this church by creating a church website that is truly second to none. One of the aspects of the website is that you can view Pine Street Life in bright, vivid color right there on the site. You can zoom in and out, search the document for keywords and even print it if you are so inclined. I never realized how beautiful a publication PSL actually is until I started reading it on the website.

Therefore, we are taking steps beginning in January of 2012 that anyone with an e-mail address will stop receiving a physical copy in the mail. You will receive a monthly e-mail when the new PSL is posted to the website with a link to the appropriate page. If you do not have an e-mail address, you will continue to receive a physical copy in the mail. You may request to receive a physical copy even if

Sullivan will portray one of those shepherds on that first Christmas Eve. The service will climax with communion and candle lighting.

At our traditional Christmas Eve service at 11:00 p.m. our choir will sing some of the loveliest music ever heard on Christmas Eve. Dr. Sullivan will preach on the subject of “The True Light”, and we will celebrate Holy Communion and conclude the service with candle lighting. This service is a blessed gift to our city and community.

On Christmas Day, Sunday, December 25, there will be one worship service at 10:30 a.m., and the Rev. Alexander Lang will preach. There will be no church school that morning.

On Sunday, January 1, 2012, there will be one worship service at 11:00 a.m. Church School will be held at 9:40 a.m.

The DDB fundraiser, “Share the Harvest” at Historic Harrisburg Association on October 14, 2011, was a huge success. Thanks to a committee of devoted DDB board and non-board members, the evening was a delightful experience for everyone in attendance. Many thanks are due to the “share the harvest “ committee, our sponsors, our raffle donors, food donors, and to Channels cooking school chef who prepared and served delicious hot appetizers. We are also grateful to the folks at Country Meadows Retirement community who baked pumpkin and sugar cookies for the event and to the Paxtang Art Association for the donation of many beautiful, original pieces of art for decoration and for the raffle.

The event venue was lit by candlelight twinkling among gorgeous fall centerpieces on marble tables, amidst the ambiance and décor of a historic 1900’s bank building, complete with a walk in vault, tellers stations, and the bank president’s opulent office. Where tellers once conducted bank business, wine was served in classy glasses; where center marble tables were once used by customers to fill in their deposit slips and to balance accounts, specialty cheeses, fruits, vegetables, dips, and desserts along with other delectable foods were displayed.

The sounds of a harp along with those from a classical guitar made the atmosphere come alive with gentle notes of soothing music with a peaceful but upbeat tone. The fellowship of the evening filled with DDB friends and “soon-to-be friends” made the evening even more special. The fun filled raffle featured many original works of art, handmade jewelry, and an assortment of impressive gifts from community businesses.

To sum up the evening, it was exactly what I had envisioned for a DDB event. It was a special evening filled with friends, music, art, good food, wine, with a purposeful mission of giving back or sharing from those who are blessed with a “harvest” to those in need. The evening was a success because we never lost sight of our DDB mission: to feed the hungry and to serve the homeless.

John Campbell, Executive Director of Historic Harrisburg wrote of our collaboration in the HHA fall newsletter, “Historic Harrisburg is dedicated to serving the community through preserving the built environment and revitalizing neighborhoods. Downtown Daily Bread is dedicated to restoring lives through stewardship and service. Together these two organizations rebuild communities through service and advocacy.” From this event, a partnership was born as was an annual fundraising community event.

Finally, Wert Bookbinders has restored a red leather “Memorial” book which was used for many years to record gifts given to Pine Street Church. The book was quite worn and has not been used for many years. It has now been repaired and its appearance restored in hopes that future memorial gifts may again be recorded. This was made possible by a gift from the Poorman and Winters families in memory of Charles H. and Sara S. Cleckner.

During Advent the restored Communion ware and Memorial book will be on display in the Gathering Place. The Communion ware will be placed on a Communion table that dates to the earliest years of Pine Street Church. Come forward before or after worship to look at the new Communion table top. Come to the Gathering Place to see the display and ponder what it means to be a restored creation, whether that creation be an artifact, a person, or an entire congregation.

Life Committee would to extend an invatation for everyone to come bowling with us. We are going to ABC West located on the Carlisle Pike, Mechanicsburg December the 17th at 1pm and are looking forward to another fun afternoon of fellowship. So come on out and bowl a couple games with us. The cost will be $8 per person for 2 games and bowling shoe rentals. We will be holding bowling events every other month so mark your calendars on the dates of February 18th, April 14th, and June 5th with a notation "Bowling 1pm"

Rachel Bani has been keeping busy this fall playing her trombone in Shepherd University's marching band, jazz band, wind ensemble, orchestra, and brass ensemble. She was asked to perform during a Trombone Masterclass with Ron Barron, former principal trombonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and was one of the featured performers in the Ram Band's 2011 show.

Rebekah Anderson will be the lead dancer for candy canes as well as perform in the major company dances in the the Pennsylvania Regional Ballet's production of The Nutcracker December 2 – 4, at the Scottish Rite Cathedral.

On December 17th and 18th she will be a guest performer with the Virginia Regional Ballet performance of The Nutcracker in Williamsburg, VA.

Sarah Anderson played her flute in this year's Thanksgiving Day Parade in Philadelphia as a guest in the Tornament of Bands All-Star Band.

Handball enthusiast Tom Hanshaw recently competed in his first Keystone Senior Games. His achievement was presented as an example of a healthy senior lifestyle in Athletic & Ageless, part of a special senior health supplement to The Sunday Patriot-News.

Bill Black will reprise his famous horse whinny in Leroy Anderson's Sleigh Ride in Central PA Symphony's Christmas with Cantate Carlisle concert at 3:00 pm on Sunday, December 11 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Carlisle.

Annual Women's Retreat

Women — Keep these dates open: March 16, 17, and 18, 2012. This will be another weekend of spiritual growth, laughter, and quality time with other women. WHAT COULD BE BETTER??? Cost is $150.
