NOMINATING REPORTScan this code to read the Nominating Committee Report.

Welcome to all and a special welcome to those joining us for Alumni Home-coming Sabbath. Feel the warmth of the shared story knit together by our time on the campus of Andrews University. But please don't get too com-fortable! Why? Another common bond is the prophetic narrative found in the scriptures. From cover to cover we are impressed to see an astounding truth: God's love for us compels Him to come close. Jesus is coming again! Because the King returns we can look forward to a time when #metoo will simply mean a childlike exuberance of "I want to join in too." It means a community where diversity grows exponentially as we begin to meet new worlds! We will enter into a space where prayer is an experience that will be a face-to-face conversation with our Creator. So be comfortable but don't get too comfortable because this is not our home, we are visitors, our home is coming!

—José Bourget

THE FOURTH WATCH BLOG

I'm no sociologist, but I was intrigued by newly released numbers this week describing the state of marriage with

Millennials, GenXers, and Boomers. And everybody's been weighing in on them!

USA Today proclaimed: "Red Lobster, bras, top sheets, sleeping with clothes and now ... divorce. Mil-lennials get blamed for 'killing' many trends, and the latest example might mean everyone's favorite generation to hate is in it for the long haul after tying the knot, according to a new study" (www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2018/09/26/mil-lennials-blame-lower-us-divorce-rate-study/1429494002/). Bloomberg News trumpeted: "Americans under the age of 45 have found a novel way to rebel against their elders: They're staying married" (www.bloomberg.com/news/ar t ic les/20 18-09-25/millennials-are-causing-the-u-s-di-vorce-rate-to-plummet).

What triggered these media re-

sponses? A new study by Philip Cohen, University of Maryland sociology pro-fessor, released this week for presentation at the 2019 Population Association of America meeting (read the paper www.osf.io/preprints/socarxiv/h2sk6/).

So what are the numbers? The sta-tistic that caught my eye is the 18% drop in the US divorce rate between 2008 and 2016. The question is Why? "One theory is that divorce rates are falling largely because of other demo-graphic changes—especially an aging population. Older people are less likely to get divorced, so maybe mellowing boomers were enough to explain the trend. Cohen's analysis of U.S. Census Bureau survey data, however, suggests something more fundamental is at work. Even when he controls for factors such as age, the divorce rate over the same period still dropped 8 percent" (Bloomberg).

While the news for Millennials is en-couraging, not so for Boomers: "Young people get the credit for fewer divorces

because boomers have continued to di-vorce at unusually high rates, all the way into their 60s and 70s. From 1990 to 2015, according to Bowling Green's National Center for Family and Mar-riage Research, the divorce rate doubled for people aged 55 to 64, and even tripled for Americans 65 and older.Cohen's results suggest this trend, called 'grey divorce,' may have leveled out in the past decade, but boomers are still divorcing at much higher rates than previous generations did at similar ages" (ibid, emphasis supplied).

And the Millennials? "Today's young couples don't seem to be following the same path. 'One of the reasons for the decline is that the married population is getting older and more highly edu-cated,' Cohen said. Fewer people are getting married, and those who do are the sort of people who are least likely to get divorced, he said. 'Marriage is more and more an achievement of status, rather than something that people do regardless of how they're doing.' Many poorer and less educated Amer-icans are opting not to get married at all. They're living together, and often raising kids together, but deciding not

to tie the knot. And studies have shown these cohabiting relationships are less stable than they used to be" (ibid).

Talking about a mixed marital bag! The US divorce rate is down (but up among Boomers). Millennials are sticking together longer (but getting married later in upper socio-economic groups). As Philip Cohen observed: "Marriage is become more selective, and more stable, even as attitudes toward divorce are becoming more permissive, and cohabitation has grown less stable" (Cohen paper). Mixed bag indeed.

All of which simply means the church, the faith community, has much work to do to portray and protect for both young and old the attractive and enduring beauty God intended marriage to refl ect. "May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth . . . may you ever be intoxicated with her love" (Proverbs 5:18-19).

Marital love, the gift of our Creator, was once intended to be forever. The poet Christian Wiman suggests perhaps it still is: "Human love has an end, which is God, who makes it endless" (My Bright Abyss 29).

BY BRIANNA MARTIN

The Fall 2018 Grow Groups season is here, and the leaders who have stepped forward to host groups have been thoughtful and creative in de-ciding what topics are being offered. We have a wealth of knowledge, expe-rience, and enthusiasm in our group of leaders, and I know you’ll find value in any group you decide to join.

Our goal is to fill every group so we can enrich the maximum number of lives with these unique opportunities for community. Because some of you may need a bit of extra urging to join a GROW Group, I’ve put together a top 7 list of reasons why you should do just that.

Reason #7: Joining a GROW Group will give you time to study/practice/talk about/listen to something you’re passionate about with others who share the same interest.

Reason #6: Joining will give you a great opportunity to invite a friend who doesn’t come to church (or maybe even believe in God) a low-pressure opportunity to experience Christ and Christian fellowship.

Reason #5: If you’re an introvert, a consistent small group of people is an ideal way to experience fellowship and community, especially if you join with a close friend or family member.

Reason #4: If you’re an extrovert, you will thrive on getting out of your house and into a new social group! Invite a neighbor, coworker, or ac-quaintance to join with you so you can get to know them better!

Reason #3: Joining a group pro-vides accountability. Whether you need support to form or break a habit, you struggle to leave the house, you can’t

seem to find time to study your Bible, or you just don’t have time to do the things you love, a GROW Group will give you the opportunity and grace-filled encouragement to take the time to do what matters.

Reason #2: You are meant to be a blessing to others. Get out and be you. You’re a unique part of the Body of Christ, and we need your special blend of gifts and talents to be complete.

Reason #1: You should join a GROW Group because Jesus will be in it, and He longs to spend more time with you.

Now that you’re excited about joining a group, take a look at the selections, choose your top 2-3, and think about that friend you’re inviting to join you. Consult with him or her and then sign up for the group that fits your in-terests and your schedules. Don’t put it off (registration is already open), and have a backup group chosen because groups may fill quickly! Once you head to pmchurch.org/grow and register, you’ll receive a confirmation and you’ll know you’re in. All you need to do after that is show up and let God work in you and through you.

And if you just can’t join a GROW Group, because of special circum-stances (or because all the groups filled up too quickly), choose one or two of the groups in this catalog and pray for them. Everyone can find a special way to be involved.

So, what are you waiting for? Let’s GROW together!

Brianna Martin is the GROW Group coordinator here at PMC.

The original version of the melody Simple GiftS, sometimes considered to be of anonymous origin, actually

appears to have been composed in 1848 by Joseph Brackett, Jr. The melody, ex-isting in a number of versions, has sometimes been thought to have been of traditional Celtic origin. Brackett, writing at the Shaker community of Alfred, Maine, wrote words including these: "'Tis the gift

to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free / 'Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be, . . ." Further along in the text, the words are, "When true simplicity is gained, / To bow and to bend we shan't be ashamed. . ." Bowing and bending—Does this remind one of Nazareth's humble Jesus? Hymn 251 says, "He walks with me and talks with me . . ." Do you walk with Him today—simply?

Eventide: A time for prayer, music and the Word.

We MournWe grieve today with Bob Danforth, Peter and Pam Swanson on the death of their daughter and wife, Lee-Ann Marie Swan-son, who died on Sunday, September 18, following a long battle with several serious chronic illnesses. There will be a second service (at a date to be determined) here at Andrews University for her friends and relatives who were not able to make it to Virginia for the previous Celebration of Life. With this family, we pray, "Even so, come Lord Jesus."

Employment OpportunitiesPioneer is hiring part-time and full-time support staff positions. Visit www.pm-church.org/employment for details.

Thank You!Dear PMC Friends, Following my recent open heart surgery, your prayers, cards, flowers, visits, hugs, and gifts of food sus-tained me in body, mind, and spirit during the many weeks of recovery. To everyone who helped me in some way, I offer my deepest thanks. May God bless you as well! —Brian Strayer

A woman once asked a pastor, "What are the best evangelistic methods?" He responded, "The ones you do. The ones you don't do are really ineffective." If we want to see God work miracles, we need to get off the sidelines and into the trenches. Pray and ask God what He wants to do in you and through you. That will put a smile on His face! Your offering today will provide resources to help ac-complish His purpose in you, and your local church. Let's Grow Michigan and God's kingdom!
