WELCOME!

THE FOURTH WATCH

Now that the brouhahas of the two major political parties in

this nation are behind us—namely their back-to-back presidential-nominating conventions—allow me this moment of non-partisan reflection.

The longer I live and the more presidential campaigns I survive, the deeper grows my conviction that the life of unabashed self-advancement that seems a requisite to politics these days is blatantly antithetical to the radical call of Christ. Let me hasten to clarify that by this conviction, I am not suggesting that there is no place for the fully-devoted follower of Jesus in politics or in the legislative, judicial and executive branches of government. Joseph, Daniel, Esther, and Nehemiah are compelling biblical examples of divinely-placed believers who rose to highly influential positions within their respective governments.

REVIVAL & REFORMATION

And it came to pass, that, one of His disciples said unto him,

“Lord, teach us to pray.”… And He said unto them, “When you pray, say, ‘Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.’”

Then He said, “Imagine what would happen if you went to a friend in the middle of the night and said, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread. An old friend traveling through just showed up, and I don’t have a thing on hand.’ The friend answers from his bed, ‘Don’t bother me. The door’s locked; my children are all down for the night; I can’t get up to give you anything.’”

“But let me tell you, even if he won’t get up because he’s a friend, if you stand your ground, knocking and waking all the neighbors, he’ll finally get up and get you whatever you need.”

“Here’s what I’m saying: Ask and you will receive; Seek and you will find; Knock and the door will open to you.” Luke 11:1-9 [KJV, The Message]

Thought Questions:• Do we have the passion ofsalvation for those around us?• Are we willing to take time fromour schedule to ask God to minister to those around us?• Do we continue to ask until theneed is met?• Are we willing to give Godthe time necessary to work with individuals who have freedom of choice; believing He can create circumstances that will bring those individuals to acknowledge God and see Him working in their lives?• Is it possible that in the GreatControversy, the Devil points to God’s followers saying, “God, you cannot work on their behalf, they aren’t even asking for your help; or if they do ask, they must not really mean it, because they asked only once.”• After praying for the salvation ofthose around us, what are we doing to help answer those prayers? Please pray:• For God’s blessings on those inattendance at the House of Prayer on Wednesday evenings.• FortheHolySpirit’sinfluenceattheannual Health Professionals Retreat at Camp Au Sable, September 14–16.• ThatGodwillleadintheAndrewsUniversity campus planning and design meetings to update and revise the Campus Master Plan. STUDENT AID

PRAYThat God will give us a heart to love

and support young people

MORE INFOJim Ford / 471.4902

[email protected]

As young people and their parents made plans for school finances

this summer, your Student Aid Committee met 3 times to consider applications for scholarship aid. We approved aid for 76 students at Ruth Murdoch Elementary School and 19 students at Andrews Academy. The average student aid scholarship granted to a RMES recipient was $600. Each academy student was approved for $500, which was matched by the Academy and the Michigan Conference for a total of $1,500. We used a standard chart from the federal government to determine need based on family income and size.

All of this was done in faith that you will continue your consistent giving to the Student Aid fund. We have very little money in hand now and depend on your generous support throughout the year. Here is a thank-you letter addressed from one of the 95 students who has been granted scholarship monies this year.

Dear PMC,Thank you for giving me an opportunity to attend Andrews Academy this year. I am very grateful and I will try my hardest to excel in all my academics. I truly love the atmosphere of Andrews Academy. The people there are always so nice and they even have the light in their eyes that we call having Jesus in your heart. That is truly something. So I am honored to be a part of this student body. Once again I say thank you very much.– A Student at Andrews Academy

Picture this: You are sitting in your pew waiting for church to start.

You are watching a team of people in black preparing for the service. They are moving microphones, adjusting cameras and going over last minute details. You think to yourself, If I was them I would do _________________ .

If you can fill in the blank, you should join the media team. Each week

20 volunteers are needed to produce audio, video, web streaming and the image magnification you see here in the sanctuary.

FAQ: I don’t have technical experience—can I still help?

A: Yes, musical talent, a creative eye and a passion for serving are of equal value to technical experience.

FAQ: What sort of time commitment will I be looking at?

A: Between 6 and 10 hours every other week.

FAQ: Wow, that is a lot of time, is it fulfilling?

A: Very, if media ministry is your passion, you’ll find yourself looking forward to the weekends you are serving not even realizing you are putting in that much time. Media ministry is unique because you have an extremely important local impact while simultaneously ministering to a global audience.

FAQ: Who do I talk with to get involved?

A: Email Nick Wolfer at [email protected].

With a new school year here, we can’t wait for all of the fun

things ahead of us as we follow God’s voice. The fun has already begun with chapel services, meeting new friends, the 6th-grade picnic at the grove, a busy Jr. High mixer, and an awesome assembly.

My friends and I love all of the cool mini-courses. From Outreach at Apple Valley to Yearbook, there are so many choices that everyone can take courses that they enjoy.

Ruth Murdoch has everything we want in a school—even some exciting after-school activities like intramurals and orchestra.

Students in all grades are buzzing about our Fall Week of Prayer. Who will our speaker be? What cool things will he or she do?

This is going to be another awesome year at RMES! We can’t wait to see what happens next!– Gabrielle Guderyan—8th Grader

RMES / A STUDENT’S PERSPECTIVE

THE FOURTH WATCH CONTINUED

William Wilberforce is a shining example from our “modern” annals. God honors those who honor Him in the realm of service to humanity, including political leadership.

But given the political climate in this nation—where 24/7 news cycles hyper-magnify every slip of the tongue and wink of the eye ad nauseam, where candidates and their political action committees spend literally billions of dollars in campaign ads eviscerating their opponents, where ethical standards and moral convictions it seems are banished from the arena of political contest by expediency and greed—you have to wonder how long a Peter or a James or a John or a Mary could survive a run for political office, while maintaining a radical devotion to Jesus and the ethics of His Sermon on the Mount.

Perhaps the Prisoner was engaging in more than early-morning banter with the hastily awakened procurator—perhaps in that interrogation Jesus was deftly confronting Pilate, himself a political appointee of Rome, with a higher ethic. It certainly is clear that in these words Christ pronounces the steely truth about those who would take up their own crosses and follow Him: “‘My kingdom is not of this world.

If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here’” (John 18:36). And if His kingdom is not from here, then surely His followers live by a morality and an ethic that does not prevail here either—a morality that allows your opponents to nail you to a cross while you seek their forgiveness and reject personal retaliation, an ethic that leads you to turn the other cheek, to pray for those who “despitefully use” you, to love your enemy.

No wonder when they came to crown him king, Jesus ran from office rather than for it (John 6:15). No wonder when the devil offered Christ the kingship of this world in exchange for His soul, Christ turned from office rather than toward it (Matthew 4:8-10). No wonder on the eve of His death Jesus spoke a “last word” about political ambition and position by simply instructing His disciples, “‘You are not to be like that’” (Luke 22:26).

No wonder you and I have second thoughts about the political discourse of a nation drifting farther and farther from the decency and respectability of our beginnings. And no wonder we will find no savior in the contest this fall.

MUSIC ALIVEMAJESTIC HERALDINGS

Today’s concluding organ voluntary starts with a

contemporary reworking of the majestic opening of “Lift Up the Trumpet” (hymn no. 213). This grand hymn, with its energetic rhythms, is ingrained deeply in Adventism. In the organ piece, the basic rhythms remain but the melody and harmony are significantly transformed. The hymn melody of “We Have This Hope” (no. 214) by Wayne Hooper

then follows. The Voice of Prophecy commissioned a multi-movement organ composition in 2000, based on this melody and to be completed in honor of Wayne Hooper’s 80th birthday. Its final section, titled “Time of Deliverance” and heard today, is based on Daniel 12:1: “. . . and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book” (Dan. 12:1).

There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.

People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.

Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap.

For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth.Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.

THE WORD LUKE 21:25, 26, 34-36 NIV
