I t’s Sunday evening. tomorrow I fly to the east coast where the

general conference is convening the first meeting of the new theology of ordination Study committee (toSc). these 102 men and women from around the world will gather for four three-day meetings over the next two years. our task will be to prayerfully examine what the bible teaches about ordination and the role of both men and women in the gospel ministry, come to a conclusion at the end of the two-year study, and recommend a course of action to the leadership of the world church. these church leaders will subsequently submit a recommendation to delegates of the world church gathered in 2015 at the quinquennial general conference session.

A warm winter’s welcome to you, our visitors. Rain, snow, or shine, our doors are thrown wide to you—whether you’re visiting from down the street or across the States. The warmth around here is the joy of Jesus’ friendship—and we’re hoping you find Him today in a fresh and unforgettable way. If you’re out winter shopping for a new church home, come join our Pioneer Family. We’d love to have you share the journey with us. And come to dinner today, following our second celebration—down in the Commons where our host families look forward to welcoming you. We’re honored to have you. Come again!

When my three children were less than ten years old, my

wife took them to the pediatrician for a well-check. after the doctor had finished examining each child, he asked them if they had put on their seatbelt when they came to the office. they all said, “No.” Well this doctor was very kind but firm, telling them, and by extension my wife and me, that he did not want to work hard keeping them healthy only to find out they were injured or killed because they didn’t wear their seatbelt. From then on, whenever we got into the car I would buckle my seatbelt and say, “model correct behavior!” this phrase became the family-known mantra for “put on your seatbelt.” an interesting outcome to this behavior was that whenever I forgot, at least one of the children would say, “model correct behavior!”

the question for us is, Do we model correct behavior? In our interactions with friends, family, and neighbors do we exemplify the character of Jesus? When they see us under pressure and trials, do they notice, just like the early christians in Jerusalem that we have been with Jesus? are we friendly to those around us? Do we go out of our way to develop, nurture, and repair friendships?

may we all see the importance and take the time every day to talk and share with Jesus; reading and

studying his letters to understand how we can be better friends, build stronger relationships, and model correct behavior.

I just attended a baby shower. the pregnant woman was glowing, her

husband was beaming and everyone was expressing their love to this first-time expectant mom and dad. as the celebration wound down, it took three men to carry the baby gifts out to the couple’s vehicle.

unfortunately, that same show of support doesn’t happen in the lives of all families in our community. many mothers arrive at the hospital delivery room without fanfare, without necessities. because Neighbor to Neighbor community Services continually assesses the needs of families in the community, they have developed a layette ministry to fill this gap. Seven people are presently involved in this ministry led by mary hall. the ladies work to make each layette special. they put in diapers, receiving blankets, sleepers, several outfits, hats, sweaters, astuffedanimal, and a beautiful handmade blanket or quilt. Some of the items are brand new, others are carefully selected, “like new” donations. the package lets the families know that somebody cares

that they are having a baby. “In many cases,“ says laura meyer, executive Director of N2N, “our gift will be the only one the baby will receive.”

layettes are delivered to N2N clients and also given out through Intercare in eau claire and benton harbor, cassopolis Family clinic, berrien county health Department, and the parents as teachers reSa organization. In 2012 N2N gave out over four hundred layettes.

“We receive many notes of thanks from recipients,” explains meyer. “all of them basically say the same thing—thanks for caring about me and my baby. Without your gift I would not have had anything for my baby to wear home from the hospital.” –Sue Rappette

mommy and me is a ministry for moms (and grandmas or other

female guardians) and their children ages 0-5. this fun, friendly playgroup meets at 10 am on tuesdays in the pmc nursery. children enjoy playtime followed by stories and songs. then they participate in a craft or other fun activity. It is a great way to provide your child with a chance to play with others and learn to be kind and caring friends. It is also a great way for moms to meet other moms, get ideas, and make new friends. If you are new to the

area, it is a great way to meet other moms and learn what’s available. It is also a nice group if you are learning english and want a fun way for you and your child to practice. once a semester we have a potluck for participants and their spouses. We enjoyed great food and fellowship at our christmas potluck last month. We have a wonderful group of moms and grandmas and their kids. come join us! For more information find us on facebook at mommy and me at pmc or email [email protected].

peer-to-peer is a Jr. high mini-course at rmeS that is designed

to give students the experience of working with special needs students of their own age. rmeS Jr. high teacher, chris Davisson, organized the course along with blossomland officials.

to prepare for this unique challenge, blossomland teachers gave rmeS Jr. high students a three-day training session, covering topics such as physical and emotional disabilities, and led students through a number of activities. to make the experience real from a blossomland student’s perspective, rmeS students had to perform various activities while coping with a disability. other students were coached on how to encourage those students, from using plain and specific language, to physically demonstrating how to successfully complete the activity in a way that is easily understood.

rmeS students interact with blossomland students twice weekly through activities such as cooking, exploring nature, and

more. blossomland students even participate in a rmeS Field Day in the spring, where students run relay races together. recent peer-to-peer activities include exploring leaves outside and taking photographs.

the benefits to rmeS students are seen by teachers and parents. Several parents have remarked how their students’ attitudes have improved, and how accepting of others their students had become.

this life-changing course is part of our Jr. high mini-course program, where 7th- and 8th-graders take six short courses each quarter, for a total of48mini-coursesbeforegraduatingfrom the 8th grade. peer-to-peer counts as an “outreach” credit. a total of two outreach credits is required for graduation.

The FourTh Watch coNtINueD

What prayer should we be praying? I am drawn to Jesus’ prayer on the eve of his death. “‘holy Father, protect them[hisdisciples/hischurch]bythepower of your name—the name you gave me—so that they may be one as we are one’” (John 17:11 NIv). he had much he could have been interceding to the Father about—the safety of his disciples in the impending clandestine arrest and kangaroo trial he was facing, the global expansion of the fledgling movement he was leaving behind, the triumph of the new theology that would burst the seams of Judaism. but instead, four times in that single prayer, christ pleads with the Father “that they may be one” (John 17:11, 21-23). our unity wasverymuchonthesufferingheartof the Savior.

Does his prayer for unity—“that they may be one”—imply that all his disciples would always “be one” as to their understanding of the will of god, even the Word of god? the subsequent events of the early church chronicled in the book of acts are sufficient, inspired evidence to conclude that the divine gift of unity is not premised upon unanimous agreement. paul and barnabas agreed to disagree. the church council in acts 15 began with major disagreements. and yet throughout acts as they humbly submitted to christ, the bond of his unity continued to prevail—even when they disagreed.

What does that mean for this new study committee? In the record of the early church there

is surely embedded the promise that the unity of Jesus can prevail in our own community of faith as we seek agreement in the midst of our disagreement. think of the witness, if our prayers for unity within the toSc and the wider world church were answered! “unity in diversity among god’s children—the manifestation of love and forbearance in spite of difference of disposition—this is the testimony that god sent his Son into the world to save sinners. . . . this unity is the most convincing proof to the world of the majesty and virtue of christ, and of his power to take away sin. the powers of darkness stand a poor chance against believers who love one another as christ has loved them, who refuse to create alienation and strife, who stand together, who are kind, courteous, and tender-hearted, cherishing the faith that works by love and purifies the soul. . . . In unity there is a life, a power, that can be obtained in no other way” (Sons and Daughters of god 286).

So would you please join me in claiming the promise of unity in Jesus’ prayer? after all, when people as diverse as you and I, are bound together in unity by a radical love for one another, what could be more convincing of the gospel’s power to transform and elevate fallen humanity than that? For this reason alone unity is not an option for the church—it is christ’s mandate, his passionate prayer.

ro b e r t l o w r y ( 1 8 2 6 - 1 8 9 9 ) composed the music for hymn

no. 422,“Marching to Zion.” Born inphiladelphia, lowry at age 17 became a member of the First baptist church. he later served as a pastor in New york and New Jersey. he was a sacred songbook editor and composer of music. lowry once was asked for his method of composition. he replied,

“I have no method.. . .there is music running through [my brain] all thetime. I do not pick out my music on the keys of an instrument. the tunes of nearly all the hymns I have written have been completed on paper before I tried them on the organ.Frequently the words of the hymn and the music have been written at the same time.”

So christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of god and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of christ.

Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.

Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, christ.

From him the whole body, joined and held together by every sup-porting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

worShip calendaras an intergenerational, interracial, and international faith community, we ex-perience life at all stages. We want to meaningfully celebrate god’s blessings and intercessions throughout our lives. During these moments our church “family” identifies with our most common connection to one another through Jesus christ while sharing in the diversity of his creation. through the course our worship calendar we will partake in a variety of celebrations that include “Feast of hymns,” “black history Sabbath,” “pathfinder Sabbath,” graduations, and many more.

child dedicaTionSmary and Joseph modeled for us the value of bringing our children to the temple to be dedicated to the lord when they did so with Jesus (luke 2). then Jesus himself blessed the children, after rebuking the disciples for keeping them away (mark 10:16). children are of the utmost value to the creator of this world! this dedication emphasizes thanks to god for the miracle of birth, commits the parents in rearing the child in the love of christ, and commits the congregation to provide support for the parents in their responsibility.

BapTiSmSthe ancient practice of baptism represents a death to a sinful life and the resurrection of a new life purposed to walk with Jesus christ. It’s a public declaration that you are his disciple and a commitment to be faithful in fol-lowing him. When you are baptized you join the body of christ (1 corin-thians 12) which is why we want to celebrate this together. We join all of heaven and its angels, rejoicing about your newfound forever Friend and Savior, Jesus christ.
