Welcome to Pioneer Memorial Church. This Sabbath it will not take you too long to notice that this is not business as usual. There are more uniforms here than we have on a typical Sabbath. This is Pathfi nder Sabbath. Pathfi nders is a discipleship organization within the Seventh-day Adventist church that for the last 60+ years has been intentionally discipling and equipping the young for ministry here and around the world.

Many of us here have been in Pathfi nders in the past, whether it be in this club or another club on the far side of the planet. So as we sing and praise God together we invite you to be a part of our club today, because after all discipleship is for everyone. A friend told me years ago: "Our business [as a church] is to fi nd the wave the Holy Spirit is

creating . . . and then to surf it." You don't even have to be a surfer to catch that met-aphor. Because without a wave nobody surfs!

So what wave has the Holy Spirit been creating around Pioneer lately? Show up on a Sabbath morning, and it's pretty ob-vious. Children are everywhere—in our Sabbath School rooms, in our children's stories during worship. Where are they coming from? From parents, of course. So, where are the parents coming from? From all over this campus, this community and this county. And why do they come? Because what Pioneer does for children—in just the Sabbath School time slot each Saturday morning—is without parallel.

We have the fi nest, most creative chil-dren's Sabbath Schools on earth—I make that claim rather unabashedly, realizing I could be considered a biased observer! Our kids' Sabbath schools are known throughout the denomination. And as you can tell by the numbers, they enjoy the same reputation here at home.

And on this Pathfi nder Sabbath, con-sider the fact that our Evergreen Club

(ages 10-15) is second to none and that our Adventurers Club (ages 4-9) is the largest in North America. Truth is God has put together a volunteer leadership team for our young (on multiple fronts at Pioneer) that is excelling in its proactive mission/ministry for our children at every age level. I thank God for our leaders!

Call it a Holy Spirit wave, call it a demographic trend—it all adds up to Pioneer's future. Or to put it another way, the childrewn of God's family are not only the future of His mission—they are our mission now. And that confi rms (as we noted during Pioneer's 60th birthday celebration last Sabbath) the biblical metaphor, "We are Family!" Or as Paul expressed it: "So now you . . . are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God's holy people. You are members of God's family" (Ephesians 2:19 NLT).

And as a result (as we announced a week ago) our pastoral team is under-going a major shift. Jim Collins, in his mega-bestseller Good to Great, intro-duced the leadership metaphor of the bus—you must get the right people on the bus and then you must get them in the right

seats. And so after much prayerful thought among ourselves and consultation with our conference administration, we are moving three pastors to new seats on the bus.

First, to respond to this wave the Holy Spirit is creating with our children, we are asking Ben Martin (our Youth Pastor) to become our new Pastor for Children and Family Discipleship, giving special leadership and oversight to children from birth through early teens. Ben has long had a passion for discipling the youngest among us. And this shift seems a perfect fit for surfi ng the Spirit's wave.

His departure from youth ministry will be complete when we bring a new youth pastor on board the Pioneer team. Our new youth pastor will be a woman. In a few days, the conference will be interviewing several woman pastor candidates, any of whom will serve the youth of this congre-gation with passion and excellence.

Second, we have asked Jose Bourget (our campus chaplain) to become our new Executive Pastor here at Pioneer. I and we

need someone with a passion for admin-istration to oversee the vision/mission of Pioneer as we now move into our seventh decade as a campus congregation. Jose's task will be to lead the annual strategic

planning process, reviewing the mission/vision and core values, developing key objectives and tactics and establishing 3-5 year goals for this campus con-gregation.

One other major change in seats on the bus is that we are inviting Rodlie Ortiz to provide new leadership for our GROW Groups discipleship ministry, along with the community out-reach ministry he has already been leading. Brianna Martin will continue to assist him in this vital discipling. And I believe

that is an eff ective match.My friend was right—when the Holy

Spirit creates a wave, our mission is to catch the wave and surf it. Which makes the youngest of the Family our very special mission. As George Barna presciently observed, it is the youngest who are "the spiritual champions" God is promising the church. Surf's up!

The author of the text of "I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light" is Kathleen Thomerson (b. 1934).

Thomerson also composed the hymn melody HOUSTON, which is used in to-day's opening organ music. She was born in Tennessee, but was a music student in Texas, New York, and Flanders (Belgium). In her text and her hymn melody, Thom-erson achieved a noteworthy degree of

simplicity and elegant profundity. One commentary says,"The simplicity of the music and text does not imply a simplistic faith. 'I want to walk as a child' reminds us . . . that we need to become as a child to fully understand the realm of God (Matthew 18:2-4)." Composer Wayne Wold has created a lively, vibrant organ setting for Thomerson's melody.

UNDER THE ROOF: CAPTURING THE HEART OF PMC

Pioneer Memorial Church is the home of the Evergreens Pathfinder Club, the oldest Pathfinder club in

the state of Michigan. Founded in 1952, the Evergreens have been meeting faithfully since then to recite and, more importantly, put into practice the Path-finder Pledge and Law. Since 1962, the Pathfinders have been meeting in the dedicated Pathfinder Building on the campus of Andrews University, but they still do a great ministry under the roof here in Pioneer Memorial Church, as well.

Eduin Caballero, PMC's Pathfinder director, set the tone for the 2018-2019 Pathfinder year with a special theme. He writes (in the PMC Evergreens Handbook), "The Pathfinder theme for this year is "Half Full." Meaning, keeping a positive attitude at all times. In other words, keep a song in my heart. Our goals for this year are to continually dis-ciple youth to lead for Christ, leave no one behind in that discipling and to foster a sense of Christ-centered mission from here to everywhere. It is our purpose in Pathfinders to provide spiritual training that will equip Pathfinders to serve God throughout their lives."

As Francis of Assisi famously said, "...it is in giving that we receive." The Ev-ergreens stay "Half Full" by giving to

others. Many people in our church and in our community have been touched by the great things our Pathfinders do. Chances are, if you're a member here, you've helped them help our community! Each November we bring canned goods and other items to the sanctuary. The Pathfinders collect what we bring, then take it to the Youth Chapel to sort, divide up, and deliver beautiful food baskets to families in need at Thanksgiving. This year, 150 of our community's families in need were served by the Evergreens.

You probably know that before Thanksgiving each year, the Evergreen Pathfinders make and freeze apple pies to sell to raise funds to help them pur-chase supplies, attend various events, and maintain or replace their equipment. This year, the club assembled 500 pies in the PMC Commons kitchen! It's a huge undertaking and a great learning expe-rience for the Pathfinders. What you may not know about these pies is that not all of them are not sold to raise funds. In fact, each family who receives a food basket full of nonperishable foods for the hol-idays is also given a handmade apple pie to add a special touch to their Thanks-giving meal.

Pathfinders is a ministry for our children and youth. Through their coursework, as they work toward earning honors, and

through involvement with Pathfinder Bible Experience the Evergreens mem-orize scripture, learn church history, and practice valuable skills. The volunteers that comprise the Pathfinder staff work with the young people in the club to guide and mentor them, bringing them closer to Jesus.

But Pathfinders isn't just a ministry for our children and youth. Pathfinders is also ministry by our children and youth. Teen Leaders in Training (TLTs) work with younger Pathfinders to lead and mentor them. Pathfinders minister to the

community in a variety of ways, working together in cooperation to be of service to people around them. Today, under the roof here in PMC, our Evergreens children and youth are ministering to us by presenting our church service. Please take a moment to pray for our club, and when you do, consider whether there is something more you can do to help with this important ministry. Weather permitting, we will meet again on this coming Tuesday evening to celebrate God's creativity channeled through this ministry to the bereaved and seriously ill. We create and give these gifts as a token of the caring community in which we live and worship.

Where can you ice skate, swim, and take a mud bath? Yep, that would be the Detroit Northwest Church (DNC) parking lot. Grass which had been driven on and sprinkled with gravel over the years became a pit of despair. Something needed to be done, yet DNC did not have the funds to make a parking lot a reality, until they received assistance from the MAP program. Thanks to these funds, the DNC was able to install a concrete parking lot. First impressions are important and with God's help and yours, those who visit God's church in Northwest Detroit will no longer be frightened away by an obstacle course before entering God's sanctuary.

Backpacks for Berrien Collection

Each month one of the various denomina-tional churches collects food to be distrib-uted on Fridays by Backpacks for Berrien to Berrien Springs public school students who otherwise may not have much to eat over the weekend. February is PMC's month. The food must be packaged in in-dividual serving sizes. No cans or bottles. By the types of food we donate, we can make a health statement. Here are the healthful items on the food list: fruit cups, pasta, rice, beans, nuts, protein bars. Food can be brought to the church and placed in the collection box in the lobby.
