FROM SERVANT TO SON

2 PIONEER MEMORIAL CHURCH

WHO WE ARE

WELCOMEto Pioneer

We welcome our guest preacher today, Joseph Kidder, professor in the Christian Ministry department of the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary here on campus. Teacher, preacher, pastor and author, Dr. Kidder’s life testimony, that began as a boy in Iraq, is the dramatic story that has ignited his passion, which is to help people discover a vibrant, ongoing, authentic walk with God. He travels extensively in the USA and abroad, conducting seminars and training pastors, church leaders, and members in evangelism, leadership, and spirituality.

Welcome to worship today!

4 PIONEER MEMORIAL CHURCH

It may be almost Summer, but it doesn’t mean that things are slowing down en-tirely for our Pioneer community. For

University students, this time of the year will mean class intensives and studying with little opportunity for down time or getting to know new people outside of class projects. For many in the Pioneer congregation this season is for traveling, vacation, or special events.1 Is it really still important that we continue to offer GROW Groups in the Summer too?

Dillon Zimmerman, an AU student and Pioneer member, explains: "Authentic community through my high school and college years at Andrews has sustained and enriched my faith immeasurably, shaping me into the leader and disci-ple-maker I am today. For many today, the need to belong is a bridge to bless and point to the Savior."

Another student who participated in a GROW group last semester wrote: "Keep them going! I was really blessed."

SUMMER GROW GROUPS

JUNE 3, 2017 5

Judith Jean-Baptiste is a one of our Andrews students who will again lead a group of undergrad and graduate stu-dents, and Pioneer members of all ages to minister in the nursing home or in homes. As a second-year seminary student, Judith will be involved in classwork this summer. She also works long and intense shifts at Lakeland hospital as an on-call chaplain. "It was indeed very difficult for me to decide to lead out in a GROW Group," she says. "I always prefer to be in the background instead of the forefront. So, with God’s help, I was able to get out of my comfort zone and allow myself to be used by Him in a leadership position, while engaged in this beautiful ministry of visiting the elderly. It has been a very uplifting and spiritually enriching expe-rience that I will never forget."

Belle Tan is a busy mom and wife, who echoes Judith’s feelings about stepping out of one’s comfort zone. To someone who is not sure about adding yet another appointment to their calendar she says, "It is worth it to go for it and get people to-gether. You won’t be alone and the people inside the group have helped out. We met, and many didn’t know each other and we ended up as friends." Her group extended their budding friendship to those beyond their gathering: They baked cookies from scratch and then distributed them to-gether to stressed-out college students.

The Dudley’s are among our returning and faithful GROW Group leaders. What keeps them coming back to lead groups while in their retirement? Roger says: "Peggy and I are hoping that (engaged, soon to be engaged, or married) couples will register for Maximum Marriage be-cause building a solid marriage is essential to the spiritual life of both our members and the congregation."

A visitor who has asked to remain anon-ymous has expressed his appreciation of his GROW Group and described how he

experienced a feeling of usefulness and of being wanted. He’s not the only person who has been invited to a GROW Group by Pioneer members whose relationships first start as a neighbor or co-worker. "Fishin'," or inviting people to know the Christ we profess, doesn’t always mean that we pull them into a Bible study. It often means intentionally inviting and welcoming them to be part of our circle, and sharing in the joy that comes from building or creating something mean-ingful together.

Let’s continue to gather in smaller groups so that more individuals are able to find in Pioneer a place to call home and a community that shows them Christ’s acceptance. All of us can have a part in extending God’s welcome to visitors and each other.

Indeed, it is our prayer that when indi-viduals come to a Pioneer GROW Group, they will ultimately connect to God. We grow together as friends with each other and Christ, have an opportunity to serve like Him, and then eventually go out into the world empowered to live as His dis-ciples. Let’s grow!

1Not free to lead a summer GROW Group, but interested in hosting a Sabbath dinner in your home? Email Pastor Sabine ([email protected]).

Sabine Vatel is the pastor of Discipleship/GROW Groups here at PMC.

"When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.' So he got up and went to his father.

But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

Today's Worship in Music sets to music a text attributed to Francis of Assisi. Francis is noteworthy today both

for his love of nature and for his attitude toward service. Francis was born into a wealthy Italian family, but while young he renounced worldly wealth and embraced voluntary poverty. One commentator notes, "Francis of Assisi's love for all nature

is beautifully set forth. . . . In 1225, very ill and temporarily blind, Francis took refuge from the summer heat in a straw hut at San Damiano. His discomfort was increased by a swarm of field mice which also occupied the hut. Under these circumstances he wrote . . . praising God for all his creatures." And as to service? Today's text is eloquently simple and simply eloquent.

The son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' But the father said to his servants, 'Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate.

For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' So they began to celebrate."

The great gospel commission in part states: "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you" (Mat-thew 28:19-20). Some of us have had the privilege of going on mission trips to other parts of the world but many of us have not. Today’s offering is for World Budget and when we give for that cause even while still in our home location we remain engaged in the fulfillment of the great commission because part of that offering is used to fund mission projects all over the world.
