PlotJake, an 18 year old, living in the suburban England – the present day – has

awaken in an abandoned workshop qith his hand clamped into a vice.

He frees his hand from the vice to find that his cloths have been torn, his face and body; coated in blood with a concentrated amount on his inner thigh. His face and legs have been scratched and his nose has been completely smashed. He stands to find a mat that reads, “welcome”.

On the mat, there is a chisel, a hammer, a phone, an x-ray and a phone which begins to ring. He picks up the phone and a voice says, “You’re someone who likes to set people challenges, you’ve had your chances to change but you’ve refused. In your penis is a capsule, you have 60 seconds to remove it or you will be killed. Your challenge begins now.”

Jake looks at the finds an X-RAY to find it is one of his penis showing where the capsule has been placed. Realising what he has to do, he places the chisel to where the x-ray indicates the capsule is. 10 seconds remain before he raises his hand the rest is left to the audience’s imagination.

Genre

We will be doing a 2 minute opening sequence of a thriller film.

Our film will be of the thriller genre, it could also be considered a horror-thriller due to its elicit tension and suspense, taking the viewer through agony and fear.

Films of this genre tend to be adrenaline-rushing, gritty, rousing and fast-paced.

A thriller provides the sudden rush of emotions, excitement, and exhilaration that drive the narrative, sometimes subtly with peaks and lulls, sometimes at a constant, breakneck pace. It keeps the audience on the "edge of their seats", akin to a sensation of hanging from a cliff, as the plot builds towards a climax.. A thriller is usually a villain-driven plot, whereby he or she presents obstacles that the protagonist must overcome.

It could be considered a physiological thriller as it emphasizes the psychology of its characters and their unstable emotional stat.

Target Audience

Our target audience, is those aged 5-48, both males an females.

We felt the physical violence and gory nature of our film would appeal more to the male audience, however the physiological mind play that is fundamental to our film, has ben known to appeal to a female audience.

By combining the action, violence and physiological games to our film, we hope to attract those of all ages and genders to our film.

Similar Films

One of the main focuses of the Saw film series are the traps created for their victims. In the movies, the serial murderer, Jigsaw, places individuals into traps for having wasted or misused their lives; each trap serving the purpose of testing the victim's will to live. As such, these devices force subjects into near-death situations where they are typically given the opportunity to either save themselves or die. These traps are referred to as games and the whole concept of this film was very influential to our plot. Similarly to saw, our film centres around the idea of these life and death situations being “games” or as we refer to them; “challenges”. The challenges that our protagonist faces are set up by an antagonist that is clearly twisted, but again similarly to saw is trying to teach the protagonist a lesson.

Other Similar Films

Cast

For our film, we will have one screen character, We debated having a person play the antagonist, however we decided it best for ‘Jake’ to communicate with him via the phone. This way would arouse more fear and mystery into our antagonist.

This would simplify the casting process considerably and also allow us to spare no expenses when it came to costume and makeup.

Jake played by Aaron Kingham (17)

Budget

We aim to produce our production on a low budget but there are things such as: the hire of the actor, costume, makeup, props and costs of potential travel to take into account.

With no expense being spent on the hire of equipment or location, our film will be low budget and will only need a small amount of funding from each member for the group for the necessities above.

Mise-en-Scene

Costume/Makeup

The costume the actor will be wearing a white t-shirt and black baggy shorts -what you would typically expect someone to be wearing when lounging around there home, about to go to bed.

His makeup will be done up heavily in order to pass the impression that he has been severely beaten. We will sue fake blood, face paints and clay/moulds to create wounds.

Character Positioning

The main characters body language will suggest vulnerability and fear. He will be the focus throughout the sequence.

Location

- The location for our opening sequence will be within an abandoned workshop: but actually the workshop found in the DT department within Oaks Park High School.

Props

The props that will feature in our sequence are the following:

Chisel Hammer, Mobile Phone, X-ray, ‘Welcome’ mat ,Analogue clock.

Lighting and Colour

We will be filming indoors, thus using electric lighting. This will initially look bright due to the brightness of the lighting however using colour correction during editing, we will edit this so that the scene looks, dim, dull and dreary.
