FOREWORDDear Photography Khakis,
I am Samantha, creator and owner of The Bonding Tool (TBT). TBT is a personal blog which was created when my family was living in Melbourne, Australia. The blo-gosphere is where I share my daily activi-ties with the public. To date, 163 countries have viewed my blog.
The photos on my first posts were taken with a handphone, Samsung Note One. My younger daughter, who created the blog for me, was impressed that I post
daily. She gave me her Canon 550D as an encouragement and I have never looked back since. I am now exploring other genres of photography.
Blogging and the natural progression into photography has opened up a whole new world to me. It lets me sees things in a more detailed manner which I haven't before. It also trains me to be patient, waiting for the right moment. It forces me to be in the "now". It is something I enjoy and am keen on learning to becoming bet-ter. Also, to do justice to the chefs/cooks for their creative contributions to the culi-nary world, I decided to learn to photograph food in their "natural environment"- actual eateries and restaurants where I cannot control the ambient lighting. This is where Mr. Alex Lim comes in.
After my return to Singapore in late February 2013, I was invited to join Photogra-phy Khaki Group (PKG) on Facebook by Mr. Alex Lim. I was a complete noob at photography then but over the course of eleven months, I am starting to document my journal with better images.
Although I am not contributing regularly on the group's page, the members in PKG have always been helpful whenever I stumble. Take for example, last year, when I submitted a photograph to "foodgawker" and was rejected because it was not properly exposed. It didn't state if my photo was under or over exposed. Being a newbie and not comprehending photography, I wanted to know if my photo was in
fact under or over exposed so I posted it on PKG's page. Within a few seconds, over 100 helpful comments were made. I was overwhelmed with the technical terms used and Alex, the founder of PKG, quickly organized an event on food pho-tography for me to learn hands-on. 18 out of 1000 plus members joined me that day. Today, PKG has more than 4000 members. I have made many friends thanks to PKG and each has taught me valuable lessons.
It is, therefore, with great honor and pleasure when Mr. Alex Lim approached me to contribute the foreword for this month's issue for Photography Khaki Group's Magazine.
PKG is the most active photography closed groups in Facebook I have come across and its success is undoubtedly due to the arduous effort from both Mr. Alex Lim and the efficient team of administrators. It has been by far the only group with very definitive and serious objectives in providing a platform for newbie and expe-rienced photographers to learn and benefit from each other.
The publication of PK magazines is an opportunity as well as introduction for all its members to showcase their talent and share their work in a more professional for-mat. I believe the publications would innervate each and everyone of us to pursue our hobby, craft and career further.
I believe that cooking and eating with family is bonding time. And sharing recipes with acquaintances can quickly turn them into your good friends. My philosophy is old school – “If you love them, feed them. If you want to know
them better, eat with them and learn their culture”.
