P-E-M Schools to Survey Community,Seeking Feedback Regarding Facility Needs

The Plainview-Elgin-Millville Schools are in a process of evaluating facility needs for the School District. Within the past year, feedback has been received from staff, students, and administrators. More recently, the School District has established a 42 member Facility Advisory Committee made up of community members, community parents, school students, and school staff. This group of 42 volunteers is tasked with making recommendations about school facilities in terms of Capital Expenditure projects. Long Term Facilities Maintenance (LTFM) projects, as well as more long term needs that may eventually be taken to the School Board for consideration of taking recommendations to the taxpayers for a vote to approve.

To help with the process, the School Board has approved the use of a new community survey. The District will be using a firm called “School Perceptions” and will be attempting to get feedback from all residences in the District. The Facility Advisory Committee, school administration, and the School Board will all be involved in developing a survey that will be able to not only inform the public, but also specifically ask residents what they support in regards to our facilities.

The School District did do a random telephone survey in 2016, but that survey did not accomplish what the school hoped for, and the randomness of looking for only a select number of people from various demographics didn’t afford the entire community to provide feedback for the District to make decisions. The School Perceptions survey that we will develop will be an old school mail survey sent to all homes in the district. The residents will have the option of returning the survey by U.S. mail or by doing a response online. Residents will have the option of contacting the school to get a unique ID number for the online response.

It is vital that we prepare a survey that communicates the needs of the District, but also crucial that we make decisions based on the feedback we get on the survey.

As the school Superintendent, I take the responsibility of being a vanguard for our school facilities seriously, and look to put our students and staff in the best learning environment we can. I hope that our school administration and board can articulate our needs and communicate with the community in ways that can reach everyone to gain the understanding needed to make informed decisions for the next couple generations of learners that can experience the Plainview-Elgin-Millville Schools.
