Planetary Systems UnitPart 2: The Earth, Moon, and Sun
System
Concept: The Earth Moon and Sun System
Lesson Essential Questions:
1. How do the positions of the moon and Sun influence tides on Earth?2. Why does the appearance of the moon change?3. Why do the positions of the sun, earth and moon cause eclipses some months but not every month?4. How are solar eclipses different from lunar eclipses?
Vocabulary:

You will be able to answer these questions by the end of Part 2
You should already know what these words mean. You will be able to use them in your responses and discussions throughout the unit

System
The gravity of the Moon has more of an affect on tides than the Sun because the Moon is closer. BUT!! The Sun DOES have an effect!
During New Moon and Full Moon phases high tides are higher than other phases because the gravity of the Moon and Sun “work together”. These are called SPRI NG TIDES.
During First Quarter and Third Quarter phases high tides are lower than other phases. These are called NEAP TIDES.

Moon Facts
You will be given a reading. You will do the work with a partner. As one person reads, the
other should be writing down facts in the appropriate section on the worksheet…this
way you only have to do half the reading and half the writing, not all.
