The Roman god Janus aptly lends his name to our month of January since the god of doors and entrances was typically portrayed as having two heads, one looking behind to the past and one looking forward to the future. Similarly, the beginning of a new year is a good time for WNIT to reflect on where we’ve been and project where we are going.

It was just one year ago that WNIT re-designated its channels, making 34.1 our primary channel and WNIT InFocus 34.2 our secondary. Now that a year has passed and the dust has settled, this would be an opportune time to review the WNIT channel designations over a variety of venues. Viewers who receive television over the air need only select 34.1 or 34.2 on their dials to receive both our channels.

For those who receive television via Comcast cable, the following may be helpful:

Comcast carries 34.1 as its channel 10 in South Bend, Mishawaka, Goshen, Bristol, Elkhart, Plymouth, Rochester, Middlebury, Jefferson Township, Wakarusa and eastern LaPorte County, Indiana, and Edwardsburg, Niles, Buchanan, Cassopolis, Dowagiac, St. Joseph (city), Berrien Springs, Stevensville and New Buffalo, Michigan.

It carries 34.1 as channel 4 in Argos, Bourbon, Bremen, Culver, Knox, Lakeville, LaPaz, Nappanee, North Judson, North Liberty, Syracuse and Walkerton, Indiana. It carries 34.1 as channel 11 in LaGrange County, Indiana and Constantine and White Pigeon, Michigan. 34.1 is channel 26 in LaPorte (city) and western LaPorte County, Indiana. Comcast also carries WNIT InFocus 34.2 as channel 371 and it carries 34.1 in High Definition as 191.

For viewers who receive television via Dish and Direct satellite providers or AT&T U-verse, 34.1 is the only WNIT channel available, carried as channel 34. Regardless of how you receive us, WNIT is PBS for Michiana and that means we provide the best television on television.

Looking forward, 2012 promises to be challenging and rewarding as we expand our community partnerships, built viewership and membership and create more awarding-winning programs and documentaries. For example, during 2011 we provided tours of the facility to 349 persons and meeting space for 426 persons in outside groups. If you or your organization would like to see our station, please call and arrange for a tour. We are proud of our new building and there’s much to see. Later in the year, we may even have some new equipment to show off.

Membership remains at the heart of who we are. We continue to strive to make area residents into viewers and viewers into members. Building on our on-air successes in 2011—the three “South Bend” town hall style programs, OUR TOWN: WARSAW-WINONA LAKE, BRAINGAMES, THE POWER OF 100, FROM RIGHTEOUS TO WILLING: BUILDING BRIDGES IN MICHIANA – our production team is already working on several new projects, including documentaries, web videos and specials. Could they even have a new local production up their sleeve?

Prognostication is never easy, but one thing remains certain. WNIT is proud to be PBS for Michiana, in 2012 and beyond!

What’s What???WNIT 34.1 is our primary 24-hour channel that features such favorites as Lawrence Welk, British comedies, Masterpiece Classic, NOVA and Nature. It is also the home for WNIT’s line-up of locally produced programs, including Dinner and a Book, Outdoor Elements, Economic Outlook, Politically Speaking and Ask an Expert. 34.1 is carried on the basic tier of all local cable and satellite providers. Programs on 34.1 may be broadcast in either high or standard definition.

WNIT InFocus 34.2 is also broadcast 24 hours a day in standard definition. WNIT InFocus carries a blend of such PBS features as Frontline and Independent Lens coupled with programs that feature state and regional topics of interest, such as Indiana Week, Inside Indiana Business, Indiana Expeditions, Across Indiana and Indiana Lawmakers. Area cable and satellite pro-viders carry WNIT InFocus on their higher tiers for an additional fee. Please contact your service provider for channel placement on the system you use.

A DECADE OF SUCCESS: Dinner and a Book & Outdoor ElementsBoth DINNER AND A BOOK and OUTDOOR ELMENTS begin their eleventh season in January. DINNER AND A BOOK features Gail Martin and a co-host as they discuss a popular book and prepare a meal that complements the theme, country or characters. Some of the books for the new season include :The Ap-prentice; Blood, Bones and Butter; Wine and War and Sarah’s Key. Co-hosts in-clude: Joe DiMaggio, Marshall King, Tuck Langland and Alice Martin, respectively. As Gail notes, “Working with so many tal-ented guests these past 11 years has been a joy for me. The guests are articulate, ad-venturesome and very good cooks. There are many talented people in the Michiana region, and I’m glad to have found so many of them!”

OUTDOOR ELEMENTS is WNIT’s celebration of our area’s great outdoors and is presented in partnership with the St. Joseph County Parks Department. This season, Evie Kirkwood brings us such episodes as “Fall Festival,” “Let’s Hear It for Trees!” “Good for the Earth,” and “Nature’s Bounty.” As Evie said recently, “From falconry to electronics recycling, I am always amazed at the wonderful things people in our communities are eager to share on our show. I hope the program in-spires families to get outside and try some of the activities and projects we feature each week ... Or just take a hike to experi-ence nature first-hand!”

EGYPT’S GOLDEN EMPIRE Tuesday, January 3, 9pm“Pharaohs of the Sun”By 1400 BC, the Egyptian empire stretches from Northern Syria to the Sudan in Africa. Led by Amenhotep III, it is a golden age of wealth, power and prosperity. Art, technology and new ideas flourish, and Egyptian rulers are seen as gods. His son Akhenaten orders a new capital built in the desert, marries the beauty Nefertiti and embarks on a campaign of religious repression. When he dies, the new capital is abandoned. The death of his son-in-law, the boy-king Tutankhamen, marks the end of the Ahmose dynasty.

NOVA Wednesdays“Deadliest Volcanoes” – January 4, 9pmMillions of people around the world live in the shadow of active volcanoes. Under constant threat of massive volcanic eruptions, their homes and their lives are daily at risk from these sleeping giants. From Japan’s Mount Fuji to the “Sleeping Giant” submerged beneath Naples to the Yellowstone “supervolcano” in the United States, scientists attempt to dis-cover how likely these volcanoes are to erupt, when eruptions might happen and how deadly they could prove to be.

“Deadliest Earthquakes” – January 4, 10pmIn 2010, epic earthquakes all over the planet delivered one of the worst annual death tolls ever recorded. The deadliest strike was in Haiti, where a quake just southwest of the capital, Port-au-Prince, killed more than 200,000. A NOVA camera crew follows a team of U.S. geologists as they first enter Haiti in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy. Barely a month after the Haiti quake, Chile was struck by a quake 100 times more powerful, unleashing a tsunami that put the entire Pacific coast on high alert.

Caught in the middle of a centuries-old Irish-English conflict playing out on the plains of the Southwest, the Kid captured national attention with his reckless violence. His fascination with Mexican culture, his flair for Spanish and his

disdain for the Anglo authorities made him a hero of sorts to the Hispanic community, who hid him when the law came looking and mourned him when he was gone.

IN PERFORMANCE AT THE WHITE HOUSE “A Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement” Monday, January 16, 10pmPresident and Mrs. Obama host a concert in the White House East Room in honor of Black History Month. Artists include Yolanda Adams, Joan Baez, Natalie Cole, Bob Dylan, Jennifer Hudson, John Mellencamp, Smokey Robinson, the Blind Boys of Alabama, the Howard University Choir and The Freedom Singers. Morgan Freeman is a guest speaker.

CUSTER’S LAST STAND: AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Tuesday, January 17, 8pmOn June 26, 1876, near the Little Bighorn River in Montana Territory, General George Armstrong Custer ordered his soldiers to drive back a large army of Lakota and Cheyenne warriors. The battle pitted two larger-than-life antagonists against one another: Sitting Bull,

the charismatic and politically savvy leader of the Plains Indians, and Custer, one of the Union’s greatest cavalry officers and a man with a reputation for fearless and often reckless courage.

INSIDE NATURE’S GIANTS “Sperm Whale” Wednesday, January 18, 10pmVeterinary scientist Mark Evans and compara-tive anatomist Joy Reidenberg dissect a sperm whale’s enormous organs to reveal the secrets of this 45-foot deep-sea giant, which stranded and died on Pegwell Bay, Kent, England. As the team ventures inside the whale, biologist Simon Watt tracks whales in the Azores with a modern-day Jonah, Malcolm Clarke, who shows him the huge number of squid beaks in a whale’s stomach.

AMERICAN MASTERS Monday, January 23, 10pm“Phil Ochs: There But for Fortune” One of the most politically active singer-song-writers to emerge in the 1960s, Phil Ochs was inspired by Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, but also by Elvis Presley and John Wayne. He was a journalism student in college, which, per-haps, informed the extent of his protest lyrics — always witty, topical and insightful, always slightly haunting.

WYATT EARP: AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Tuesday, January 24, 8pmAs a young man, Wyatt Earp was a caricature of the Western lawman, spending his days drink-ing in saloons, gambling, visiting brothels and gaining notoriety as the legendary gunman in the shootout at the OK Corral in Tomb-stone, Arizona. Shortly after his death in 1929, distressed Americans down on their luck trans-formed Wyatt Earp into a folk hero.

GERONIMO: AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Tuesday, January 24, 9pmAfter his tribe was relocated to an Arizona res-ervation in 1872, Geronimo became a focus of the fury of terrified white settlers and of the growing tensions that divided Apaches strug-gling to survive. To angry whites, Geronimo became the archfiend, perpetrator of unspeak-able savage cruelties. To his supporters, he remained the embodiment of proud resistance, the upholder of the old Chiricahua ways. They became the last Native-American fighting force to capitulate formally to the government of the United States.

SECRETS OF THE DEAD “Sinking Atlantis” Monday, January 30, 10pmFive thousand years ago, the Minoans, Europe’s first great civilization, flourished on the island of Crete. They were the first Europeans to use writ-ing, and their technologically advanced and rich artistic culture became the setting for famous Greek myths about Theseus, Icarus and the Mi-notaur. Yet in their heyday, the Minoans were wiped from the pages of history. The cause of their downfall has remained one of the foremost mysteries of the ancient world … until now.

ANNIE OAKLEY: AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Tuesday, January 31, 8pmThis is the story of the star of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, the young woman who thrilled audiences around the world with her daring shooting feats. Although famous as a western sharpshooter, Oakley lived her entire life east of the Mississippi. A champion in a man’s sport, Oakley forever changed ideas about the abilities of women, yet opposed female suffrage.

JESSE JAMES: AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Tuesday, January 31, 9pmJesse James, so the legend goes, was a west-ern outlaw, though, in fact, he never went west; America’s own Robin Hood, though he robbed from the poor as well as the rich; a gunfighter, though his victims were almost always unarmed. Less heroic than brutal, James was a member of a vicious band of Missouri guerrillas during the Civil War.

Multiple Emmy winner (including Outstanding Miniseries) “Downton Abbey” resumes the story of aristocrats and servants of Downton Abbey during the tumultuous World War I era. The international hit, written by Julian Fellowes, stars Dame Maggie Smith, Elizabeth McGovern and Hugh Bonneville, as well as a drawing room full of new actors, portraying the loves, feuds and sacrifices of a glittering culture thrown into crisis. BLACK HISTORY MONTHUNDERGROUND RAILROAD: THE WILLIAM STILL STORY

Monday, February 6, 10pm

Extraordinary people risked their lives to help fugitive slaves escape via

the clandestine Underground Railroad. Among them was William Still of

Philadelphia, a free black man who accepted delivery of transported crates

containing “human cargo.” This documentary reveals some of the dramatic,

lesser-known stories behind this humanitarian enterprise, and explores key

Canadian connections, including the surprising fate of former slaves who

crossed the border to “Freedom’s Land.”

FREEDOM RIDERS: AMERICAN EXPERIENCE

Tuesday, February 7, 8pm

In 1961, segregation seemed to have an overwhelming grip on American society

until an integrated band of college students decided to risk everything and buy

a ticket on a Greyhound bus bound for the Deep South. They called themselves

the Freedom Riders, and they managed to bring the president and the entire

American public face-to-face with the challenge of correcting civil-rights

inequities that plagued the nation.

SLAVERY BY ANOTHER NAME

Monday, February 13, 9pm

This documentary explores the little-known story of the post-Emancipation era

and the labor practices and laws that effectively created a new form of slavery

in the South that persisted well into the 20th century. Blackmon examines the

concept of “neoslavery,” which sentenced African-Americans to forced labor

for violating an array of laws that criminalized their everyday behavior.

THE POWER OF 100: THE HISTORY OF 100 BLACK MEN OF SOUTH BEND

WNIT’s documentary THE POWER OF 100: THE STORY OF THE 100 BLACK

MEN OF SOUTH BEND follows the creation of the South Bend chapter of the

100 Black Men of America. Many of the children featured in the documentary

are raised by single moms while drugs, gangs, bad influences, all vie for their

kids’ attention. That’s where the “100” comes in. These stand-out citizens

from South Bend have had great successes in their lives and many of them

overcame the same situations as the students they mentor.

AMERICAN MASTERS “Cab Calloway: Sketches”

Monday, February 27, 10pm

“Minnie the Moocher,” with its popular refrain “Hi de hi de hi de ho,” was Cab

Calloway’s signature song, and Harlem’s famous Cotton Club was his home

stage. A singer, dancer and band leader, he was an exceptional figure in the

history of jazz: a consummate musician, he charmed audiences around the

world with boundless energy, bravado and elegant showmanship. He toured as

Sportin’ Life in Porgy and Bess, forever putting his personal stamp on “It Ain’t

Necessarily So.”

INSIDE NATURE’S GIANTS Wednesdays, 10pm“Great White Shark” – February 1The experts travel to South Africa to dissect a 15-foot-long great white shark. Veterinary scientist Mark Evans investigates the origins of the shark’s infamous killing bite, and evo-lutionary biologist Richard Dawkins explains how sharks’ teeth and jaws evolved from their outer skin and gill arches. Finally, the experts ask whether the shark deserves its reputation as a man killer.

MICHAEL FEINSTEIN’S AMERICAN SONGBOOK, SEASON 2Fridays, February 3-17, 9pm“Time Machines” – February 3“Time Machines” explores how technology has preserved — and altered — the way we think about the great songs and singers of the past. On a coast-to-coast tour, Michael Feinstein introduces viewers to soundies (the original music videos), the historic building where “jam sessions” were born (and still hosts after-hours gigs) and an eclectic array of performers and collectors who help keep the music alive.

THE BRIT BOWLSunday, February 5, 4 – 8pmNo fumbles, no penalties, no time outs. As an alternative to the Super Bowl, WNIT of-fers eight episodes of the classic Brit Com, “As Time Goes By.” Watch Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer as the series follows the rela-tionship between two former lovers who meet unexpectedly after not having been in contact for 38 years.

NATURE Wednesdays, 8pm“Raccoon Nation” – February 8Are human beings, in an effort to outwit rac-coons, actually making them smarter and unwittingly contributing to their evolutionary success? Are the ever more complex obstacles that our fast-paced urban world throws at them actually pushing the development of rac-coon brains? Scientists from around the world closely follow a family of urban raccoons as they navigate the complex world of a big city.

NOVA Wednesdays, 9pm“Separating Twins” – February 8This is the incredible story of Trishna and Krishna, twin girls born joined at the head. Abandoned shortly after birth at an orphanage in Bangladesh, they had little chance of survival, until they were saved and taken to Australia by an aid worker. All members at $50 and above can enroll their children or grandchildren in WNIT Kids Club. Members enrolling at $75 and above will receive the WNIT Kids Club Plus MemberCard offering 2-for-1 discounts at area restaurants, museums, attractions and online stores and shopping. WNIT Kids Club members can also receive special discounted tickets to children’s performances at area venues.

Two age levels are offered for WNIT Kids Club participants:

Each kid receives an age appropriate WNIT Kids Club backpack with a variety of PBS® children’s items and activity sheets. Gail Martin, host of WNIT’s DINNER AND A BOOK, and sculptor Tuck Langland led a wine, sculpture and dinner tour in southwestern Michigan on October 23. Guests sampled wines and enjoyed appetizers en route to Baroda, Michigan, for a wine tasting and tour at Lemon Creek Winery.

The bus then traveled to Dowagiac for a tour of public sculptures led by Langland, a national award-winning sculptor. After the tour, guests walked to the Woodfire Grill in downtown Dowagiac where they enjoyed a choice of one of several three-course dinners with wine.

As Gail says, “Good friends, good food and good trips make for a very good life.”

BrainGames, WNIT’s fast-paced series focusing on the human brain’s functioning at various life stages, concluded in November as Alick’s Home Medical bested 32 Pearls Family Dentistry and Jones Obenchain, LLP to win the championship round. The four-part series was co-hosted by Debra Raybold, director of Memorial BrainWorks, and Mark Durocher.

Brenda Bowyer Senior Producer, 15 years

As senior producer for WNIT’s productions, we rely on Brenda for her organizational skills as well as her abilities to tell great Michiana stories. Aside from that, Brenda is the person who keeps the staff members, crew members, as well as freelancer and interns, informed and on the same page. She also produces three of our five weekly local shows, ECONOMIC OUTLOOK, POLITICALLY SPEAKING and ASK AN EXPERT.

In addition, Brenda helps produce many of our one-time specials and short series such as Memorial’s “BrainGames,” “Michiana: Thriving or Dying?” “Michiana’s Economic Future” and many more. She is a consummate professional with a keen eye, golden ears and unbounded energy. She is also instrumental in strengthening our bonds and securing funds with organizations across Michiana.

Kelsy Zumbrun Producer, 13 years

Kelsy’s main area of responsibilities are co-producing OUTDOOR ELEMENTS along with Evie Kirkwood and directing most of our local shows. On OUTDOOR ELEMENTS, he has made a difference in the look and pace of the shows. Kelsy created the beautiful opening sequences on the program

and has also expanded the segments on the show to include more interaction between viewers and the program. Additionally, Kelsy has produced the Spectrum Award recipient “Holocaust Cantata” and is the producer of “Music from the Acorn,” which WNIT is developing for state and possibly national distribution.

Kelsy was also the videographer for FARM FRESH TO YOU, another recipient of the Indiana Broadcasters Spectrum Award. In addition, Kelsy is responsible for scheduling WNIT’s master control to make sure that we are always on the air.

Dan McDiarmid Production Technician, 10 years

If there is a staff person who can be identified by determination and tenacity, it is Dan McDiarmid. Dan is our “go to” editor and is also a valued master control operator. But it is in his editing skills that Dan shines.

The greatest respect a producer can give to an editor is, “Please take these hours of tapes and make something of it.” And when the editor comes back with a polished, finished product, he is the producer’s best friend. Needless to say, Dan has many “best friends” among the production staff.

The WNIT Directors’ Circle represents a very dedicated and select group of individuals who, by their commitment, contribute to the total annual support which is the foundation of WNIT’s operating budget. These essential annual contributions make possible the great programs that everyone in Michiana enjoys.

John Phair

This month WNIT shines the Supporter Spotlight on recent WNIT Board member John Phair, president and CEO of Holladay Property Services Midwest, Inc.

During his years of service to WNIT, John and his wife, Barbara, have been Directors’ Circle members, capital campaign donors and program underwriters.

John served on the WNIT Board of Directors from 2001-2011. From 2004-2006 he served as long range planning chairman and from 2007-2009 he was vice chairman of the Board. In addition, he served on the Executive Committee from 2007-2009.

WNIT salutes John’s financial support of WNIT and thanks him for his many years of service.
