SUMMER OF ADVENTURE!
A
LL SUMMER LONG!
THE EXPEDITION BEGINSTues July 10
A Message from Greg GicziPresident and GM, WNIT Public Television
Dear Viewers:
I begin this letter with a big hug for your incredible and enthusiastic support of our WNIT Day of Giving on May 31st. We are so appreciative to the estate of Jack and Shirley Appleton of South Bend, and Lyons Industries of Dowagiac for putting together a “pot of gold” as an incentive to our viewers to match the amount. And you did, and more! All together, you contributed $35,865. With the matching funds, we were able to raise $50,865 from 140 donors. Thank you! Your support helps keep the great programming we provide, without commercial interruption, on both of WNIT’s channels, 34.1 and 34.2.
It always seems I have too much information to share in too short a letter, and this issue of the Planner is no exception! We start with the program that draws WNIT’s largest audience of the year, A Capital Fourth, on July 4th of course, will start at 8pm, with a repeat at 9:30. If you watch the earlier program, you’ll still have time to step out for a local fireworks display!
Get ready for a “Summer of Adventure!” Throughout July and August, Tuesdays and Wednesdays will feature spectacular films of travel and natural wonders. Look inside your Planner to pick your destinations from the many titles. I have my eye on 10 That Changed America, Tuesdays in July.
Firing Line is returning to public television as the new Friday night companion program to Washington Week. It’s a reprisal of William F. Buckley’s iconic (1966-99) program which set a standard for smart, civil, and engaging public policy discussions. The new host is political strategist and commentator, Margaret Hoover. You will find bright minds and fresh voices debating the important issues confronting our country.
On July 26th, we’re going to tell the story about the man who helped build WNIT when it was only a community dream. Jerry Hammes, local business executive, family man, and philanthropist, was the very first chairman of the Michiana Public Broadcasting Corporation’s board of directors. He served for 6 years, from our incorporation to 1974, when WNIT achieved its first broadcast. It’s an inspiring story I recommend watching, Thursday, July 26th at 8pm, with a repeat airing on Sunday, July 29th at 3pm.
Baseball fans…Ted Williams is in the line-up for American Masters on Monday, July 23rd, at 9pm.
Discover 34.2 (Comcast Ch. 371) for the 3-part series, Inventing America, July 2-4 at 9pm. And, starting July 10th at 10pm, we will begin re-airing the Forsyte Saga.
Enjoy your summer! Enjoy WNIT! We are your community-owned television station dedicated to public service. Thank you!
Best wishes,
Greg Giczi

MANNHEIM STEAMROLLER CHRISTMAS Wednesday, December 12 at 7:30pm
Get your tickets to this Michiana tradition before they’re gone! Grammy Award winner Chip Davis has created a show that features Mannheim Steamroller Christmas classics along with a selection of compositions from his groundbreaking Fresh Aire series which introduced the distinctive Mannheim sound to all of America. WNIT has concert tickets in the first eight rows on the main floor orchestra section of the Morris PAC as well as meet and greet packages.
August 2018 Membership CampaignWNIT’s Membership Campaign begins Friday, August 17th and runs through Sunday, September 2nd. Our on-air Membership Campaigns remain the most effective way of encouraging viewers to join the WNIT family of supporters. While these drives represent less than two percent of our annual broadcast hours, they do provide WNIT with the majority of revenue required to purchase and produce the regular and local programming enjoyed by everyone throughout northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan.
Remember to check out the diverse line-up of new pledge programming. There’s something for everyone! And be sure to tell your family and friends why you think supporting WNIT is important and encourage them to do the same.

It’s Viewers Like You who make a real difference to everyone in our community.
THANK YOU for supporting WNIT!

The “Our Town” documentary series embarks on a journey to get viewers to stop and take a peek inside what life is like in the special, little towns that make up our Michiana area.
In the newest installment of the series, Our Town: Culver, WNIT takes you inside what makes Culver a special place to those who live there. Located in Marshall County, find out why Culver, Indiana and Lake Maxinkuckee are often described as “the Cape Cod of the Midwest.” This popular summer destination is not only home to the second largest lake in Indiana, but some of Indiana’s greatest history including The Original Root Beer stand.
WNIT is proud to present its newest installment of the “Our Town” series, Our Town: Culver on Monday, August 27 at 8pm with a repeat airing at 9:30pm on WNIT channel 34.1.
Legends of Michiana: Jerry Hammes to Air on WNIT Public Television! The Legends of Michiana documentary series focuses on people and organizations that have been influential to the growth and development of the Michiana area.
One of the founding fathers of WNIT, Jerry Hammes has left an indelible mark on the city of South Bend and beyond. Born into a family that personified the American dream, Jerry was a third generation Ford dealer who not only grew the family business, but also enhanced the community through his philanthropic and civic endeavors. Through his service on countless economics and not-for-profit organizations within the region and around the world, his generosity has been felt far and wide.
John Bowling, President of Olivet Nazarene University said “I think if it were possible to dust the world for fingerprints today, we would find the fingerprints of Jerry Hammes in thousands of places; in schools, in hospitals, in churches, in neighborhoods, and particularly in the lives of thousands of young people, many of whom never ever got to meet him, but he has left an imprint on.”
The word “Legend” is often defined as a collection of stories about an admirable person. Jerry’s impact on the community went far beyond business. He routinely gave back to others by donating his time, expertise, finances and his belief.
Jerry believes in the citizens and institutions of South Bend in a way that would forever endear him to this city, and for that Jerry is known as “The Believer.” It was his ability to believe in others, see the good in everyone and help them develop the belief in their selves to become leaders. That truly makes him a “Legend of Michiana.”
WNIT is proud to present its newest installment of the “Legends of Michiana” series, featuring Jerry Hammes, on Thursday, July 26 at 8pm, and again, Sunday, July 29 at 3pm on WNIT Channel 34!

South Bend Cubs to host Mister Rogers Day on August 12Players to wear special jerseys featuring Fred Rogers’ iconic sweater; post-game jersey auction to benefit WNITIn honor of the 50th anniversary of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, the South Bend Cubs will host Mister Rogers Day at Four Winds Field on Sunday, August 12 at their scheduled 2 p.m. game at Four Winds Field in South Bend, Indiana.
In recognition of this 50th anniversary, the South Bend Cubs are partnering with local PBS affiliate WNIT and Fred Rogers Productions to celebrate this milestone. Clips from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood will be shown on the video board throughout the game. Daniel Tiger, star of the award-winning PBS KIDS series Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and the son of the beloved original puppet, will also be in attendance. Fans can sign a giant banner with their own message of thanks to Mister Rogers. Special messages of thanks from fans, players, and community members will also be shown throughout the game.
The South Bend Cubs are one of the few minor league ballclubs in the nation to host an event honoring Fred Rogers for the anniversary.
“Mister Rogers inspired generations of children with the message that it’s ok to be ourselves,” said Joe Hart, President of the South Bend Cubs. “He taught us important life lessons and did so in such a caring manner. During the 50th anniversary of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, we feel it’s important to recognize and honor his legacy, and to share it with our younger fans who may not have had the chance grow up with our television neighbor.”
The South Bend Cubs will wear special jerseys that day, depicting Fred Rogers’ iconic red sweater. In recognition of Rogers’ support for funding public television, the jerseys will be auctioned off after the game, with the proceeds benefitting WNIT.
Greg Giczi, President and General Manager of WNIT, said, “Mister Rogers is beloved like the South Bend Cubs. Whether you are a Mister Rogers ‘alumni’ and he was part of the formation of your value system, or a current ‘student’ learning from Daniel Tiger, you know you are loved, ‘just the way you are’.”
Tickets can be purchased online at SouthBendCubs.com or by calling the Box Office at 574-235-9988.

SupporterSpotlight
Rita Schobert Snyder has been a supporter of WNIT for many years and a Directors’ Circle member since 2004. When Rita’s late husband Rudy passed away, she wanted to continue her husband’s legacy by giving to WNIT and supporting the mission that her husband truly believed in. Because Rita has been given so much over the years, she thinks it is the right thing to give back to her community.
Rita graduated from Stephens College, married Rudy and raised three daughters. After her children were grown, she worked at Ramsey News Company in Warsaw. She volunteers with the Warsaw Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Tri-Kappa, where she also served as president, and as a board member for the Kosciusko County Community Foundation. Rita now has three granddaughters and four great grandchildren she enjoys spending time with.
It had been a lifelong dream of Rita’s to live on the beautiful Winona Lake. In 1981, she and her husband Rudy decided to tear down the Schobert cottage and build a winterized, permanent home on the property where the cottage stood from the early 1900’s. She takes pleasure in starting her mornings now, with her husband Carl, drinking coffee on their sun porch and enjoying the beautiful view of the lake. Rita enjoys the travel and nature programming that WNIT offers as they are educational and helpful to her.
