Digital Graphic Narrative Planning

Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.

Considerations:

There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that context rather than just as a college project.

Costs:I will be using a mac and with Photoshop CS6 both of which are already provided by college. However I will be sourcing images from the internet to use in my project so unless I use stock/royalty free images there might be some cost concerns in terms of rights and use.

Available resources:I will be using rotoscoping so I have images sourced from the internet that I can use so long as they don’t exactly replicate the original. I also have a Mac with Photoshop CS6 at college, I also have a Windows laptop at home with Photoshop CS5.If I can’t find an image that I want to use then I have my Mobile’s camera that shoots in 1080p so that I can take images with it to then rotoscope.Quantity:My product will be more of a specialist production as appose to a more mainstream one as it is based off of a popular internet urban legend so people who are not avid internet users will not really understand what the book will be as much as a more regular internet user who knows the story.

Page 2: Planning booklet

Audience and Target Market:My audience is both parents and children because:Many children including and myself grew up being very fond of the idea of pirates and becoming a pirate due to products such as Monkey Island, Yo Ho Ho etc. So I using this premise to keep the childhood fantasy of pirates alive by creating a relatable story such as Peter Pan, which involves children, like the readerThis book is not targeted toward adults but will still attract their attention if they have/had an interest in the internet tale.

Quality Factors:As this book is aimed at children I will use a diverse colour range as at a younger age children are more interested in a cartoon appearance as appose to a more photo-realistic as it is easier for them to understand.I have also drawn out detailed concepts of each page and I will use these as the base when producing my pages, this will help me to get the pages completed a lot quicker than if I began on just a bare screen.Codes of Practice:Codes of practice include: Time, Quality and illegality.Time – This is, in my opinion, the most important aspect as it states that if the work is not submitted on time then the author will not get paid for their work.Quality – This aspect of the codes states that the product must be completed to the quality guidelines that are agreed with the publisher. If the work is submitted and not to the publishers liking but fits the guidelines then the author will still be paid even if the book does not get releasedIllegality – This section is not necessarily as relevant as the others as It works under the acts: Obscene Publications and Equality. As these are books aimed at children so it is highly unlikely that anything obscene will be published.Regulation:This says that books must meet the Toy Safety Directive, this is due to younger children having a tendency to put toys and other objects in their mouth so if a book Is made of paper a child is likely to get paper cuts from it or do further harm this is why children’s books are made form card.Another aspect of books that is changed under the Toy Safety Directive is a book having pointed ends which could be lethal to children if for instance they were to drop it on their selves. This is why they have curved edges so children cannot inflict any injury on themselves.Copyright:My work may be seen as a breach of the copyright act of 1976 meaning permission if use will need to be applied for as

Page 3: Planning booklet

the original Candle Cove story Is written by Kris Straub and posted on creepypasta.com which states in it’s regulations that all stories on there are copyrighted by their authors. However I have completely altered the story as the original is of the horror/supernatural genre where as my work is a version more fit for a children’s book. Some aspects of different fan artworks are rotoscoped, however I have altered these and they don’t significantly resemble the original so copyright claims are very unlikely to be made over this.Ethical Issues:These issues include aspects such as ageism sexism etc. All of which are part of the Equality Act of 2010. For Instance if a woman is always the one getting into trouble and the man always becoming the hero this could arise if a complaint was made.In my story there are no female characters that visually appear so this may be a minor discrepancy however my justification is that I am tailoring this story around the age old stereotype/representation of pirate in media which is that the majority if not all are male.

Resources:A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.

If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.

Resource:Do you have it? What do you need to do to get it?

MacSupplied by College  To use the Mac I need to attend College

Photoshop

The College Macs have CS6 installed and my personal laptop has CS5 installed

I will use the CS6 for when I am attending college but if I do not meet a goal or wish to do some work on the project I will use CS5 on my laptop outside of college.

Page 4: Planning booklet

 Laptop

I have my personal laptop that I will use outside of college time.

This is my own laptop that I can use at home to work on or bring in to college on study days.

 Test Page

Yes, I will use the Percival and George models from it. This test page is backed up on my laptop as well as on my USB.

 Digital Flat Plans

Yes, used as the basis for pages. Also backed up on my laptop as well as my USB.

 Images  No.

I will source images from the internet to rotoscope and depending on whether they are royalty free or not I will need to make sure they do not resemble the originals.

Production Schedule:Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.

Each session is a half day of college.

Session 10:Return to previous pages to add extra detail and or fix any errors that I may have encountered.

Health and safety:Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.

Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from happening.

Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.
