Digital Graphic Narrative Planning

Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.

Considerations:

There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that context rather than just as a college project.

Costs: As I will be creating all the assets for my children’s book, there will be no cost involved. If I was planning to take the development of my book further, such as getting it professionally printed, a cost would be introduced.

Available resources: I will have access to Apple Mac’s both at college and at home. Both of these computers will have the adequate software needed such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator

Quantity: To begin with, I will only be creating on copy of my book. This copy will be used for coursework purposes. If I was planning to release my book to the larger market, I would first develop a batch of paperback copies which I would sell online. If this batch sold well, I would branch out into e-book markets such as iBooks and kindle

Audience and Target Market: As I have mentioned in my proposal, selecting a target audience for a children’s book takes more research as you not only just have to catch the audience of the child but also the parent as they are the one who buys the book. I finally decided that the child age group I would aim my book at would be 5-7 years old and the adult age group I would aim the book at was 30-45 years as this the average age of an adult with a child ages 5-7.

Quality Factors: Several factors may effect my production process and overall final quality. One of these may be missing valuable production time. I will ensure that I keep my self able to work and attend lesson and If I do miss a lesson, I will catch that time up either in a library or at home. The computer equiptment I am using may also cause me problems as It may break and not allow me to finish my work. I will always back up my work both online and on pen drives so that if I do suffer computer failure, I can move onto another computer and begin working again.

Codes of Practice: The codes of practice apply to those who are under agreements which a person licences an interest in copyright of work. This doesn’t apply to those who have invested money into a published piece

(20) Above all, the publisher must recognise the importance of co-operation with the author in an enterprise in which both are essential.

o This code talks about making sure that the author and publisher are constantly discussing and working together to create suitable books.

(10) The publisher might consider assisting the author by funding additional costs involved in preparing the work for publication.

o This code states that if an author is struggling financially to create a publication, the publisher should aim to support

the author (7) The publisher must not cancel a contract without good and proper reason.

o This code has been put on place to prevent big name publishers from terminating contracts without being responsible and having proper reasons.

Regulation: regulation talks about regulations on children’s toys such as choking hazards. My book is going to be printed as an ordinary childrens book with no pop out parts or removable parts. This means that my book doesn’t have any major regulations to meet. However, I will still take prevention measures such as not using sharp corners etc

Copyright: All the images I have used online are copyright and royalty free. This means that If my book was to go on the children’s book market, I would not have any copyright issues or compensation to pay to image owners.

Ethical Issues: My book is set in a very different culture to most ordinary children’s books. However, I have ensure that I have not referred to any ethical issues or discriminations. I have ensure that my book will be accepted by all cultures and religions

Resources:A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.

If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.

Resource:Do you have it? What do you need to do to get it?

Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.

Each session is a half day of college.

Health and safety:Your health and safety and that of those around you are very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.

Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from happening.

Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.

Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it?

Repetative strain injury from long computer use.

I will take regular breaks from computer use and ensure that I am sat in a practical position compared to the computer

Tripping on loose wires

I will check that my working station is suitable and safe before beginning work, this includes checking for low hanging wires.
