THE SOpHiSTiCATED All-rOUNDEr

The essertop® 4000 skylight dome has a long track record: its “spiritual father” is Klaus Esser, inventor of the skylight dome. Its technology is based on the essertop® 2000 range which has proven itself many thousands of times and has been consistently developed and en-hanced. This makes the current essertop® 4000 an excellent all-rounder for natural lighting, aeration/ventilation or smoke extraction in flat-roofed buildings.

The essertop® 4000 is available as a 2, 3 and 4-skin version. It therefore fits flex-ibly into a building’s use with regard to thermal and sound insulation. It also sat-isfies the requirements of the European Energy Saving Ordinance.

The essertop® 4000 has plastic glazing which is open to water vapour diffusion as standard. It is factory-prepared for the fitting of an opener for daily aeration and ventilation. The hinges and a lock are pre-installed in the factory which ensures that the skylight dome and up-stand can be joined quickly and easily.

THE NEW DiMENSiON Of THErMAl iNSUlATiON

Skylight domes not only ensure natural lighting as well as aeration and ventila-tion. At the latest when the new Euro-pean Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV) is introduced, they will also play an im-portant part in the thermal insulation of office and administrative buildings as well as halls with industrial usage.

The essertop 4000 thermoplan® skylight dome copes with these new challenges. With its U-value of 0.83 W/m²K, it is cur-rently the best skylight dome in respect of thermal insulation. The essertop 4000 thermo plan®, not only meets but ex-ceeds the requirements of the European Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV).

The esserfix 4000 thermoplan® rigid sky-light dome (page 7) and the fumilux 4000 thermoplan® smoke and heat exhaust ventilator (page 30) also offer the same excellent thermal insulation properties.

THE fUNCTiONAl EyE-CATCHEr

Technically identical to the essertop® 4000 skylight dome, the shape of the essertop®

4000 pyramid opens up new design opportunities without compromising on functionality.

Many nominal sizes as well as 2, 3 or 4-skin versions ensure technical flexibility and optimum adaptation to the required level of thermal and sound insu lation. It also satisfies the requirements of the Eu-ropean Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV).

The essertop® 4000 pyramid has plastic glazing which is open to water vapour dif-fusion as standard. It is factory-prepared for the fitting of an opener for daily aera-tion and ventilation. THE fixED AND yET SO flExiblE SOlUTiON

The fixed esserfix® 4000 is also based on the essertop® 4000 skylight dome.It is the natural lighting solution for flat-roofed buildings and halls which do not require any additional ventilation func-tion.

The sophisticated functionality of the esserfix® 4000 can already be seen when fitting it: After placing the mounting frame with sealing strip on the upstand on site and screwing them together, it is sufficient to place the skylight dome onto the mounting frame and to fix it with special skylight dome nails.

The design and construction of the esserfix® 4000 enables it to be fitted safe-ly and quickly on ESSER and ETERNIT upstands as well as on virtually all third-party products (see page 19).

THE STyliSH VAriANT WiTH GlASS AND AlUMiNiUM

The esserplan® G glass light element is the high-end solution for natural lighting and ventilation.

The casement element consists of thermally separated aluminium profiles which can be coated in various RAL col-ours. The cover frame ensures that no rainwater is left behind on the glazing.Solar control glass or SPSG can also be supplied as an option to the standard insulation glazing (U-value 1.1 W/m2K). The esserplan® G glass light element is prepared for fitting on essertop® up-stands.

THE VAriANT WiTH All-rOUND AppEAl

The new essertop® 5000 circular is per-fect where there are special require-ments for appearance as well as function. Here, harmonious design meets a GRP frame construction which offers excel-lent thermal insulation due to thermal separation and PUR core. The frame of the essertop ® 5000 can also be supplied in virtually any RAL colour. The plastic glazing as standard facili-tates further customisation: 2, 3 and 4-skin versions and the thermoplan® variant are also available. This means optimum adaptation of thermal and sound insulation is possible depending on the building’s use. It also satisfies the requirements of the European Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV).

The essertop® 5000 is also factory-pre-pared for the fitting of an opener for dai-ly aeration and ventilation. The hinges and a lock are pre-installed in the factory which ensures that the skylight dome and upstand (page 13) can be joined quickly and easily.

SOlUTiONS fOr All CASES

There may be very specific requirements for a skylight dome depending on the different requirements on a building, e.g. its use or specifications and regulations.

Our special designs are the solution. They all impress with ex-cellent product quality, durability of function and ease of instal-lation and handling.

Special skylight dome designs

essertop® 4000/5000bG DOME, b1 DOME

Special requirements for safety in the event of fire are fulfilled by its approval for fire protection class B1. At the same time, it offers fall-through protection in accordance with the requirements of the German building trade association.

➜ High level of safety in the event of fire

➜ fall-through-proof in accordance with the requirements of the German building trade association

essertop® 4000/5000 HEATSTOp

The specially coated outer skin of this skylight dome reflects infra-red light. Heat radiation is effectively diminished. The incident light corresponds to opal skin material.

➜ Diminishes infra-red heat radiation

essertop® 4000/5000SElECTAlUx

This skylight dome reflects undesirable sunlight due to the higher shape of its skin pack with bottom skin lacquered on one side. It ensures the incidence of light only from the north side.

➜ Sun protection

essertop® 4000/5000 DArK DOME

The glazing of this dome is opaque. It is suitable for locations where effec-tive ventilation but no incident light is desirable.

➜ Opaque

essertop® 4000/5000 THErMAl iNSUlATiON DOME

The opaque thermal insulation dome has a special thermal insulation panel underneath the outer skin which gives it an excellent U-value of 0.61 W/m2K.

➜ Excellent thermal insulation

esserdur® 4000/5000

The esserdur® is tough. Its outer skin con-sists of extremely impact-resistant plastic but it still offers a high level of translucency. There is a choice of 2, 3 or 4-skin design or the thermoplan® version.

➜ Hail-resistant

Therefore the amortisation period is considerably shorter than the average useful life of a skylight dome and a great deal shorter than that of a building. Other factors not taken into consideration in the calculation which further shorten the am-ortisation period: Costs of replacing lights, increasing the per-formance of the staff, positive effect on illness rates.

With a useful life of the skylight domes of around 25 years, this amounts to a cost saving in excess of 180,000 euros.

WATEr Drip EDGE AND rAiN AprONTwo features make our upstands particularly functional products: the water drip edge and the rain apron. The water drip edge directly on the opening cross-section of the upstand ensures that no rainwater can run over the edge and into the building. The rain apron projects over the end of the raised roofing felt thus protecting the upper con-nection point perfectly against the elements. The result is a permanently watertight transition from roofing felt to skylight dome.

CONNECTiON rAil KiT

The connection rail kit which con-sists of aluminium profiles, corner connectors and appropriate fixing material is used to create a seal-tight joint between the raised roof felting and the upstand. The connection rails are designed to fit perfectly with

the rain apron of our PVC upstands. They are pre-assembled in the factory to the appropriate nominal size.

iNSECT prOTECTiON esserprotect®

Open skylight domes provide a bolt-hole for insects and a trap for foliage and coarse dirt. The insect protection esserprotect® closes the clear opening of the upstand with a fine-mesh fabric which is enclosed in a white-coated aluminium frame. A brush strip seals the penetration around the opener. The insect pro-tection can easily be removed for cleaning. In food companies, such as food production and processing or in sales outlets (bakeries, butchers, large kitchens, canteens, etc.), the insect protection prevents contamination as is com-pulsory in accordance with EU Regulation 825-2004 Appendix II, Sections I and II.

The insect protection esserprotect® is available:• For all skylight domes in the essertop®, esserdur® and

esserplan ® G ranges• Pre-assembled to the appropriate nominal size• For direct or retrofittable installation

ATTACHMENT pOiNT esserprotect®

Safety at the highest level – this is essential when working on flat roofs. The employer's liability insurance association there-fore recommends an attachment point on skylight domes and smoke exhaust ventilators so that fall arrest and restraint sys-tems of personal protective equipment (PPE) can be hooked up to prevent falls. The attachment point esserprotect® is test-ed and certified to DIN EN 795:1996 or DIN EN 795 A1.2000.

The attachment point esserprotect® is available:• For the PVC upstand essertop® 30 cm

and for steel upstands fumilux® (above nominal size 100 x 100 cm)

• Pre-installed in the factory (no retrofitting possible)

KliMATOp SHADiNG

Efficient shading over the skylight dome effectively prevents in-teriors from heating up due to solar irradiation but at the same time still ensures adequate lighting of the building. Excellent shading result without heat build-up with only approx. 15-20% restriction of incident light.

The clever concept

Would you like to use a solution for frequent renovation tasks that is fast and straightforward? Then our pre-con-figured kits are just made for you. All the key components have already been grouped together in functional units – customised for renovation, repair and/or change of use.

• Repair or replacement of skylight domes to ensure or re-establish func-tional effectiveness.

• Adaptation of skylight domes to new needs or requirements, particularly conversion from fixed to openable.

• Raising and resealing of upstands and replacement of skylight domes in the course of energy-conserving roof renovation.

DETERMINING NOMINAL SIzES

We require the following on-site dimensions in order to determine the correct nominal size:

Flange width of upstand or ventilator frame

Upper inside diameter of upstand or ventilator frame

Lower inside diameter of upstand

General requirements for the renovation or repair of skylight domes and upstands• Regulations of the employer's liability insurance associations• Workplace Directive • EnEV “European Energy Saving Ordinance”• DIN 5034 “Daylight in interiors”• zVDH Guidelines (Flat roof guideline)• Laying specifications of roofing felt manufacturers• DIN 4108 “Thermal insulation in buildings”

roof renovations with existing upstands on the buildingThe essertop® 4000 renovation kit, comprising essertop® reno-vation upstand and essertop® 4000 skylight dome, is mounted on the existing upstand on the building during roof renova-tions. This is mainly necessary where additional thermal insula-tion is applied in accordance with the European Energy Saving Ordinance if the distance from the top edge of the upstand to the surface of the roofing fails to meet the minimum require-ment (it must be at least 150 mm). Installation of the essertop® 4000 skylight dome is extremely easy and safe thanks to the factory pre-installed hinges on the renovation upstand.

Application• Mounting of additional insulation packages while retaining

the existing upstand• Ensuring the prescribed minimum distance (150 mm

between top edge of upstand and surface of roofing)

roof renovations with existing upstands on the buildingThe essertop® 5000 renovation kit also consists of a renovation upstand and skylight dome. The task here too is to continue using the existing upstand on the building. In this case, the essertop® 5000 renovation upstand bridges the additionally thermal insulation applied in accordance with the European Energy Saving Ordinance and it ensures that the minimum distance from the top edge of the upstand to the surface of the roofing is adhered to. The factory pre-installed hinges on the renovation upstand allow installation of the essertop® 5000 skylight dome to go quickly and professionally.

SAVEr Of HUMAN liVES AND MATEriAl ASSETS

Natural smoke exhaust ventilators

Natural smoke and heat exhaust ventilators (NSHEV) are a key component of our company. Preventive fire protection have also long been a permanent part of our range of services. For it is only possible to save human lives and material assets in the event of a fire if everything works perfectly.

Planners and architects bear a special responsibility in this case. As a reliable partner, ETERNIT Flachdach guides you through the process of smoke exhaust planning with a comprehen-sive range of consulting services. Therefore you can be cer-tain with planning consultation by ETERNIT of positioning the right number of smoke and heat exhaust units, with the right dimensioning, in the right places on the flat roof and naturally of meeting the requirements for structural fire protection.

NEVEr lEAVE ANyTHiNG TO CHANCE iN THE EVENT Of A firE

firE pErfOrMANCE Of DiffErENT MATEriAlS

If fire breaks out in a building, one thing counts above all others: time. Time to get people to safety and to lessen the impact of the fire. Natural smoke exhaust ventilators can be a key factor in this case. For in the event of a fire they extend the load-carrying ability and the stability of load-bearing or sepa-rating structural elements.

NSHEV (natural smoke and heat exhaust ventilators) prevent flash-over by removing heat and smoke at an early stage and limiting the temperature increase. No full fire develops as no flash-over occurs. Rescue and fire-extinguishing become pos-sible in the smoke-free building. Smoke damage is kept to a minimum.

The material of the skylight dome skins plays an important role in skylight domes that do not open automatically in the event of a fire. It requires high temperatures to not only deform the material but to get it to melt. Example: PVC starts to deform at approx. 130 °C, melting range is 225 °C.

This effect is definitely desirable because on the development of a full fire it contributes to preventing a building from being destroyed completely. In this scenario, a skylight dome serves not only for personal protection but also for the protection of assets.

At the beginning of a fire, however, it is firstly a matter of keep-ing the rescue and extinguishing routes as free from smoke as possible. Natural smoke exhaust ventilators have different opening mechanisms each of which are activated by the in-creasing room temperature during a fire (thermal activation). This may be CO2 activation directly at the skylight dome or central activation via an alarm station. In this case, all the natu-ral smoke exhaust ventilators that are linked to a station open simultaneously and automatically. The opening mechanism itself may be operated pneumatically or electrically.

Our natural smoke exhaust ventilators meet all the statutory requirements and are available in a large number of different versions and nominal sizes.

Stairwellsmoke exhaust ventilator

Safety without compromise

In the event of a fire, stairwells become both escape routes and also access routes for rescue teams. Therefore, the State Building Regulations (LBO) specify clear guidelines for stairwell smoke extraction in domestic, office and administrative build-ings.In most federal German states, the geometrically free area of smoke extraction systems must be 5% of the stairwell base area but at least 1 m2. The current version of the State Building Regulations must be observed in each case.

STAirWEll SMOKE ExHAUST VENTilATOr fumilux® 24-J 10

The electric smoke exhaust system fumilux® 24-J 10 is suitable for old and new buildings and has two activation devices spec-ified by the State Building Regulations, one close to the build-ing entrance and one on the top landing. The building authori-ties may require additional alarm control stations. These alarm stations are easy to operate and display the activation. Further activation devices may be wired in or connected depending on the requirement. In addition, the system may also be used for everyday tasks such as natural lighting and ventilation.

bASiC KiT fumilux® 24-J 10

This kit, which is available in each case as a version in line with the State Building Regulations or VDS (contains additional accessories), consists of:• Control centre with integrated emergency power supply

(72-hour functional safety)• Two NSHEV pushbuttons as EMERGENCY OPEN/CLOSED

button, colour orange• Smoke exhaust motor with 500 mm lift

The basic kit can be combined with skylight domes of the essertop® und esserdur® ranges as well as with arcade skylight domes.

The natural smoke and heat exhaust ventilator fumilux® 4000 offers exemplary functional safety, approved in accordance with EN 12101-2.

It has an individual automatic thermal activation. In the event of fire, a small glass vessel breaks due to the heat (68 °C), the integrated CO2 cartridge is punctured and the gas flows into the pneumatic cylinder which opens the smoke and heat ex-haust ventilator.

There are three variants to choose from for the group activa-tion specified according to DIN 18232, VdS guidelines and the industrial buildings guideline: CO2 release, electrical and elec-tromagnetic activation. Activation in all variants is carried out via the central alarm station.

There are additional advantages to this maximum security of activation and operational availability, namely natural lighting and ventilation of the building.

ElECTriCAlly CONTrOllED NSHEV WiTH OpEN/ClOSED fUNCTiON

The natural smoke exhaust ventilator fumilux® 4000-24V is the electrical alternative to the pneumatically controlled smoke extraction system. Its 24 V technology takes over opening of the skylight domes – activated by the smoke detector – in the event of a fire.

The control centre of the 24V system contains both the con-trol technology and an emergency power supply. It is no prob-lem to incorporate other from building services management functions.

The smoke exhaust ventilator fumilux® 4000-24V also offers the automatic opening and closing function. The advantage: All smoke exhaust ventilator skylight domes of a system are closed quickly and simultaneously.

The skylight dome can also be used for daily ventilation of the building via the electrically controlled smoke exhaust mechanism.

The fumilux® 4000-24V is approved in accordance with EN 12101-2.

Planning with safety 35 Skylight domes and smoke exhaust ventilators

Smoke exhaust ventilator renovation

Stairwell smoke exhaust ventilators: Geometrically free cross-section

Renovation of stairwell smoke exhaust ventilators in compliance with the relevant State Building Regulations (LBO). Without/ with additional thermal insulation.

industrial and office buildings: Geometrically free cross-section

Renovation of smoke and heat exhaust ventilators (opening angle < 120°) which are designed in accordance with the geometrically free cross-section. Without/with additional thermal insulation.

industrial and office buildings: aerodynamically free exhaust area

Renovation of natural smoke and heat exhaust ventilators (NSHEV) which have been designed with aerodynamically free exhaust area in accordance with DIN 18232. The dimensioning should remain unchanged. Without/with addi-tional thermal insulation.

In the event of a fire, stairwells become both escape routes and also access routes for rescue teams. To ensure the optimum functional performance of the smoke exhaust ventilators, we offer customised solutions for the renovation of geometrically dimensioned systems in stairwells. The relevant fire protection concept or building permit specifies the decisive requirements for the smoke extraction system to be renovated.

Clearly defined requirements are made for preventive fire pro-tection in buildings with industrial use, such as workplaces and storage halls. In this sector, we have time-tested solutions for the renovation of geometrically designed systems in non-res-idential buildings. The relevant fire protection concept speci-fies the authoritative requirements for the smoke extraction system to be renovated.

Particularly if the worst should come to the worst – in a fire – only a system which functions perfectly can prevent conse-quential damage. Our smoke and heat exhaust ventilators satisfy all the requirements for preventive fire protection and naturally comply with the relevant safety standards, guidelines and regulations (DIN, VdS, LBO, IbauRL). In this sector, we have time-tested solutions for the renovation of aero dynamically designed systems in non-residential buildings. The relevant fire protection concept specifies the authoritative require-ments for the smoke extraction system to be renovated.

Please examine the possibility of re-using existing cables and alarm stations when planning our renovation solutions for smoke and heat exhaust ventilators.

Defective smoke exhaust ventilators can be renovated quickly and safely using the renovation smoke exhaust ventilators fumivent® 4000-18 VdS and fumilux® 4000-VdS-PAz. It is suffi-cient to simply mount the smoke exhaust ventilators on the ex-isting upstand on the building (geometric nominal size minus 18 cm or minus 11 cm) and to screw them together. The reno-vation smoke exhaust ventilators are certified in accordance

with DIN EN 12101-2 and recognised in accordance with VdS Guideline 2159 in conformity with the Building Rules List. These tech nical approvals guarantee legal certainty for planning and acceptance of the smoke extraction system. Both renovation smoke exhaust ventilators can be used with an unchanged roof structure and also with the application of additional thermal insulation.

Maintenance

There is no place for compromise when it comes to fire protec-tion and fire-fighting because both can contribute to saving human lives. There are appropriate regulations in the indus-trial sector that clearly regulate the maintenance measures that must be taken.

However, apart from these regulations, it also makes sense to carry out professional maintenance: it contributes to maintain-ing the value and functional effectiveness of flat roof compo-nents in the long term.

ACT ACCOrDiNG TO rEGUlATiONS AND WiTH fOrESiGHT

Smoke and heat exhaust ventilators must be maintained once a year in accordance with DIN 18232 or EN 12101 and VdS guidelines.

The maintenance work covers the following areas:

• Activation and appraisal of the smoke exhaust ventilator group’s function

• Maintenance on opened units• Replacement of the CO2 cylinder used for the activation• Documentation of the maintenance or functional perfor-

mance of the smoke exhaust ventilators
