Around Plant

Wh

as?

This months poster designed by Mark Lee

highlights the potentially lethal risks of

working around plant.

Some of these risks can be associated with our behaviours;

• Who has walked too close or on the blind side of

plant?

• Who has walked past plant without ensuring the

operator knows your intentions?

• Who has seen a vehicle reversing without a banksman

and not stopped it?

• Who has operated plant, even though the flashing

light or mirror is damaged?

It’s very easy to become complacent when working around plant,

its human nature to adapt to your working environment…….

So what can we do about it?

But this sometimes means we don’t

recognise or see the ris

ks!!!

Every single person on site can make a real difference, so what can

YOU do?

• Don’t Walk By, if you notice something wrong

on site don’t assume someone else is doing

something about it - tell your supervisor

• Check plant daily, if there is something wrong

or broken don’t use it until it is fixed.

• Be aware of operating plant -

“Wave Hello Say Goodbye” never walk on the

blind side of plant, ensure the operator can

see you, stay in segregated areas.

• Think about the Inspire Currencies:

♦ Alpha - Never assume people around you are aware of the

risks.

♦ Habits - Just because you have done something before

doesn’t make it safe,

♦ Personal Risk Perception - Your perception of risk will

reduce the more times you carry a task out.

♦ Time Versus Risk - Don’t take shortcuts - it’s not worth it!

♦ Communication - If you think something is wrong then talk

to your line manager

Actions • After this Toolbox Talk discuss what good

and bad behaviours around plant occurs on

your site or other sites you have worked on.

• Each site to list any good ideas related to improving peoples

behaviours around plant and send them through with the

signed briefing sheet (O57)

• Undertake a weekly inspection looking at Behaviours Around

Plant.
