Words to GROW by!“REAL” CHRISTMAS TREE CARE LIKE

THAT OF FLOWER BOUQUETA “real” Christmas tree, like a bouquet of flowers, likes to be cool and out of drafts.

Immediately upon its arrival at your home, make a fresh, straight cut (1/4 inch is enough) across the base of the trunk. Then place the tree in a bucket of water in a sheltered area until you are ready to bring it indoors for mounting and trimming. Avoid letting the fresh cut dry out, because it will restrict subsequent water uptake.

But a tree stand that has a reservoir that hold a lot of water. Keep the reservoir filled, because a dry tree not only loses its needles and attractiveness, but it also becomes a fire hazard.

A Christmas tree may absorb a gallon of water the first 24 hours after mounting and several quarts a day thereafter, according to industry experts.

Locate the tree away from sources of heat, such as fireplaces, space heaters and television sets. Do not place it under a central space heaters and television sets. Do not place it under a central heating vent, because this accelerates the drying process.

Before installation, check the electrical lights and connections you use on the tree, and be sure other holiday decorations are in good working order to ensure a safe and joyous holiday season. Replace frayed cords with new sets and keep sockets filled with bulbs, even when some do not light.

Never use lighted candles or combustible tree decorations of any kind. Do not use lights designated for indoor use outdoors. Be careful not to overload electrical circuits.

Always unplug lights when you go to bed or leave the home.

SELECT LANDSCAPE SHRUBSFOR SPECIFIC SITES, PURPOSES

One of the most important considerations in landscaping is selecting the proper plant for the proper site and that rule particularly applies when planting shrubs.

How often do we see shrubs planted in a site where they are not adapted or being used for a purpose for which they are not suited.

Adaptability relates to a plant=s ability to survive under the growing conditions to which it is exposed B such as temperature, soil moisture, other soil factors (texture, pH, etc.), exposure and many other factors.

In addition to selecting shrubs for specific sites based on adaptability, shrubs can be chosen for certain characteristics or landscape purposes. These may include growth habit, flowering, growth rate, foliage characteristics or ability to attract wildlife.

The following listing provides information on shrubs for showy foliage in the shade, shrubs for blooms in the shade, shrubs for wet sites, shrubs for dry sites, shrubs with berries/fruit, shrubs with long blooming periods, shrubs for evergreen hedges/screens, shrubs for all foliage color, shrubs with fragrant blooms and shrubs to attract butterflies.

Shrubs for showy foliage in the shade include: oakleaf hydrangea, Virginia willow, nandina, fatsia, mahonia, clethra and aucuba.

Shrubs for blooms in the shade: sweet olive, gardenia, oakleaf hydrangea, azaleas, nandina, camellia and sasanqua.

Shrubs for wet sites: buttonbush, wax myrtle, devilwood and Virginia willow.

Shrubs for dry sites: junipers, spireas, Chinese hollies, yaupon, oleander, sago palm, barberry, Indian hawthorn, nandina, butterfly bush and sumacs.

Shrubs with berries/fruit: beautyberry, nandina, pyracantha, Burford holly, Indian cherry, mahonia, Oregon grape holly and strawberry euonymus.

Shrubs with long blooming periods: butterfly bush, swamp cyrilla, althea, Chinese hibiscus, sweet olive, sasanqua, chaste tree, abelia and Indian hawthorn.

Shrubs for evergreen hedged/screens: Japanese yew, Japanese holly, Chinese holly, azaleas, clethra, sasanqua, eleagnus, sweet olive, pittosporum, ligustrum, Florida anise and photina.

Shrubs for fall foliage color: oakleaf hydrangea, blueberry, Chinese witch hazel, sumacs, Virginia willow and clethra.

Shrubs with fragrant blooms: native azaleas, spicebush, gardenia, sweet olive, chinese witch hazel and winter honeysuckle.

Shrubs to attract butterflies: azaleas, ligustrum, buckeye, buttonbush, viburnum, butterfly bush and clethra.

Retail garden centers across Louisiana have the largest selection and availability of recommended shrubs during the spring.

Four Deputies Graduate from Police Academy; Two Receive Awards

On November 10, four Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies graduated from the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Regional P.O.S.T. Academy, Class 91. Deputies Matthew Freeney, Jonathan Ochoa, Troy Smith and Urban Treuil obtained their Louisiana Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certifications. The session ran from September 8 to November 10.

During the graduation ceremony, Deputy Ochoa received the Marksmanship Award and Deputy Freeney received the Physical Fitness Award. Deputy Freeney also served as the Class Speaker for Class 91.

In addition to the P.O.S.T. required subject areas for certification, the deputies received training on ground fighting, emergency vehicle operations, chemical weapons certification, active shooter, standardized field sobriety testing, building searches, defensive tactics and Taser certification.

Upon successfully completing the Field Training Program, all four deputies will be assigned to the Patrol Division.

Sheriff Greco says, “I congratulate all four of you on your commitment, dedication, and hard work in successfully completing the academy. We are also extremely proud of the two awards that Deputies Ochoa and Freeney earned. This training will serve as a foundation to your law enforcement career. I wish you much success in the future.”

As the temperature plummets in many parts of the country, The Humane Society of the United States sees a marked increase in the number of complaints of dogs and cats left outside with no food or shelter. We encourage you to contact local law enforcement agencies, because pets left outside in extreme temperatures without food and shelter are at risk of hypothermia, frostbite, and even death, placing their owners at risk of facing criminal charges. The act of leaving a pet outside without food or adequate shelter often receives less attention than a violent attack against an animal, but neglect is a crime. Especially in these cold months, it is important for people to bring their pets inside and for others to report neglected animals to law enforcement,” said Ashley Mauceri, The HSUS’s deputy manager for animal cruelty investigations, who fields these calls.

If you see a pet left out in the cold, speak out. How you can helpReport what you see: Take note of the date, time, exact location and the type of animal(s) involved and write down as many details as possible about the situation. Video and photographic documentation of the animal, the location, the surrounding area, etc. (even a cell phone photo) will help bolster your case.Contact your local animal control agency or parish sheriff’s office and present your complaint and evidence. Take detailed notes regarding who you speak with and when. Respectfully follow up in a few days if the situation has not been remedied.

The three local college and professional football teams dearest to our heart finished 2014 with less than stellar records. The Tulane Green Wave had a sub-.500 season, but what else is new? At least they had a new stadium designed to their fan base’s specifications and did a credible job in filling it this season. The Greenies will never be a football contender but then their fans know that. So they show up - sometimes by kickoff - and cheer for their favorite Uptown team in moderation. Good for them. No silly dreams about national championships or repeat Super Bowl winners for those hearty folks.

LSU Tiger fans, on the other hand, have another eternity to wait as Nothing Ever Changes with Coaching and lousy quarterback recruitment/development continues its constant presence. With an 8 and 4 season, with three of those wins coming against Rent-a-Teams and only one bragging rights win (Ole Miss), the Bayou Bengals watch again as the well-coached and strongly disciplined Alabama Crimson Tide make another bid for a national championship. The Tigers have a true freshman quarterback - a second-stringer - who can’t keep his mouth shut and can’t start a game without the jitters. Ohio State has a third-string quarterback who never started a game, starts against FAVORED Wisconsin in the Big 10 Championship Game and helps blow out the Badgers, 59-0. Is there something wrong here? Very wrong? LSU’s one loss in their 2003 National Championship year came at home against Florida, who that night started a true freshman quarterback for the first time - Chris Leake, who was succeeded by another true freshman quarterback three years later, Tim Tebow. It’s not that true freshmen quarterbacks can’t play or start a big game - it’s the fact that some coaching staffs can’t recruit the type of quarterback leaders and performers it takes to produce such a player.

Only Tommy Hodgson every started with a quality performance at LSU as a true freshman quarterback, but there was no one else to do the job. The fact is that under Bill Arnsbarger, Hodgson did his job. The sad fact is that very few LSU quarterbacks ever show the type of leadership it takes to win a national championship. Matt Mauck and Matt Flynn were players for the season and Herb Tyler and Zack Mettenberger did their darnedest during their senior seasons to lead the Tigers to good seasons but none of them were freshmen or redshirt freshmen. A bowl appearance by underachieving Notre Dame is a good matchup for two programs that probably won’t see any real future glory for several years. The 102,000 plus seat Tiger Stadium will see one or two sellouts for the big games each year but as I stated before the season began, the days of Tiger Stadium sellouts are gone for the near future. A stale product and a disinterested management team regarding fan’s needs and wants will continue to erode the Tigers’ support until there are changes in the board room and on the field.

The Saints, meanwhile, continue to feed their world-class fans a less than world-class product on the field. Last week’s fiasco against the Carolina Panthers shows that there is more than just talent lacking in Metairie. While Cam Newton was playing Superman in the Superdome, the Saints were playing (in a) Stupor, man, a stupor of inconsistency and overrated talent. Injuries notwithstanding, the era of the invincible Sean Payton and Drew Brees is over. Brees can’t be faulted for not scrambling for more yardage. He’s no coward but he sees what other quarterbacks get when they run a lot - injuries and lost playing time. Brees knows if he doesn’t throw at least 45 times a game, the Saints stay the ‘Aints and it ‘aint gonna happen on Poydras Street with this roster. Yes, they could win the South and host a wild card team, but that team will likely be Seattle or Philadelphia and prospects for a win look bleak. The Saints have lost four in a row at home and likely will lose in cold Chicago this weekend. The Falcons looked strong in the second half against Green Bay at home on Monday night football and the Saints will have a miserable time trying to stop Julio Jones in the Dome. If the Falcons win, which they probably will, then the embarrassment of a possible 6 and 10 team in the playoffs will be eliminated.

There are no quick fixes for any of these three teams. The Saints don’t like to - and really are not good at - drafting impact defensive players, so good luck trying to find an All-Pro linebacker or defensive tackle or cornerback. And Rob Ryan? Well, the family tree production from the Mannings - Archie to Peyton and Eli - is definitely an improvement while the Ryans - Buddy to Rex and Rob - well, what more needs to be said? Two more years of the Payton/Brees aerial circus is all Saint fans can reasonably expect before the tent folds for the final time. But if this season is any indication, the three-ring circus is down to two rings. It’s time to go out and prepare some new acts to eventually replace them.

PLAQUEMINES FISHING REPORTS 12.11.14

Barry and his son mike were in New Orleans for the state championship high school play offs in the Super Dome. His team lost by a heart breaker field goal in a hard fought game. Instead of the 6-7 hour drive back home they decided to make a weekend of it and go fishing. They have fished with me before.

We met at the dock, had breakfast at the marina, and sat around for about another hour waiting for the dense fog to lift. As it got kind of clear we headed out. We saw several of these fog rainbows in areas where we had (some) clearing. These were frosty white not multi colored.

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM

I eased down river in a pass off the main river. Not much boat traffic and the fog was not as dense. It was very dense when I had to cross the lower river but I crossed it carefully. On the other side things got a lot clearer. I wanted to go for bulls on the beach but we hit a wall of fog in the bay that was too dangerous so we decided to look for some meat.

Our first fish set the tone for the day. There was no pressure for this trip. He did mention he would like to get a bull red and maybe some flounder but it was a wish list not a request. I have fished together with Barry and several of his family so we had a relaxed trip with some good joking and busting. We had a lot to talk about because Mike had the hot hand.

Every fish that went in the box was put there by Mike. Barry commented this was the day he wanted. The trip was all for his son. I told him he had my permission to catch one for the box also.

He was having a hard time even getting a rat red but he did find a few of them while Mike was having fun out fishing dad and busting stones. With the slow bite we had just enough to keep us there. Although the pictures are clear it was almost noon before that wall of fog allowed us to get across the bay to the beach to look for bull reds. We made the trip out there only to have big rollers from the day before making it difficult to fish. Seeing we made it out there we gave it a try but struck out. I stopped at another place on the way in but the water was not right. After a few casts we moved back to our little fishing hole we started in. This time Dad got on the board!

This 30 incher gave him a good fight and made his day. Little did he know the better things were still ahead of us. Mike got the first black drum that was undersized but it was not long before he traded it in for a keeper.

GENERALLY SPEAKING

Fishing can’t get much better so if you want to avoid the first of the year blues, get out on the water before the holidays are done. There’s no real football bowls to worry about and the weather is unseasonably warm. Gasoline prices are the lowest in five to six years and all is good. But don’t wait until 2015. Do it now or forever hold your peace! Watch for the early morning fog and ship’s wakes and don’t go into that dark night not knowing what you are doing. Bring some live bait but chartreuse artificials are working just as well. Fish like you want to: it’s time to clean up. Try the public dock at MGM for $10 for adults and get your speck or redfish limits. What are you waiting for!?! Take the paper with you and read quickly in between bites.

MGM MARINA - While the ladies were shopping on Black Friday, the men were all down at MGM Marina. Leona said she counted 34 boats in the middle of the Wilkerson Canal on Black Friday. Dock fishing is excellent and Leona said one fisherman came in Monday morning, bought 30 live shrimp at 5 AM and returned at 8 from the dock with his limit and four live shrimp left over! That’s efficiency! This is the time of year with these conditions to catch reds at MGM. Come down for a few dollars and come away with a great fishing and catching experience! As these pictures show, hunting was good also. MGM MARINA 504-656-2267.

LLOYD LANDRY - 504-912-8291. Down here is South Plaquemines the speckled trout are flying into the boats as fast as IPads are flying off the shelves on Black Friday. The river is on fire from Empire to the Head of Passes. One of the easiest ways to access the river is to launch at Buras. Start fishing the cuts in the rocks heading south and you’ll find trout and reds all the way down the river. Be aware of boat traffic and ship waves. Use a 3/8th ounce jughead with your favorite soft plastic. On the west side of the river, head to Yellow Cotton Bay where the trout catch has been on fire. The Buras Canal back up to Empire has been producing some great catches. Get out in this seasonally warm weather with dirt cheap gas prices and enjoy this wonderful fishing time of year. Be safe and tight lines. LLOYD LANDRY. OUTCAST FISHING CHARTERS 504-912-8291

BESHEL’S BOAT LAUNCH - They’re biting good all over the same places out of Beshel’s. Reds and trout and some others scattered in. The fish are liking the chartreuse Tsunami and Sparkle Beetles as well as the VuDu Shrimp. In fact, any chartreuse seems to be working now, but it usually does. If no luck with green, try a white plastic or skirt. As usual, call Beshel’s first to see about live shrimp. BESHEL’S MARINA AND BOAT LAUNCH/BOAT SLIPS.

JAY QUIROS. OUT OF VENICE ALONG THE PASSES. 504-228-5895. JAY QUIROS. ON A MISSION FISHING CHARTERS. 504-228-5895.

VENICE SPORTSMAN’S LODGE AT THE MARINA - DAN SKERMETTA. The redfish are still biting pretty well and the trout are showing up in the diversion canals. The offshore guys are catching some nice yellowfin and blackfin tuna when the seas lay down enough to get out. I’ve seen a lot of ducks on my trips up and down the river and a lot of hunters with limits back at the docks at Venice Marina. CAPTAIN DAN SKERMETTA. 504-481-2320.

Captain Dan Skermetta with a real nice 17 lb red snapper caught this weekend in Venice.

As the day is getting near the end of our trip dads cork is “acting funny”. I tell him he has one on. The cork is just moving a little but something is there enjoying his bait. As soon as he sets the hook the drag starts screaming. The fish heads down along the bank and the line singing as it rips a wake in the water. It had to be a bull red. We were getting spooled so I checked the drag. Sometimes my customers will make adjustments. A slight adjustment and things got more on an equal playing field. It was still making the drag sing some but now we were able to gain some line back occasionally. This is just what he had asked for. After a good battle between man and beast the boat gets 18 pounds heavier. The smiles and high fives go all around. It was only 36 inches but was broad shouldered and had a good girth. This fish put up a fight like a lot bigger fish. After the photo op we returned it to give another angler the thrill Barry had.

CAPT HOOP -- Continued

As we were heading in I wanted to check 2 cuts that I have always gone past and never fished. The first stop had a lot of rat reds so we hit it for about 10 minutes and moved on. At the second and last place Barry hooks a fish on his first cast. I see it and quickly grab the net. Barry had the first flounder of his life. A few more rat reds and we headed in.

Good friends, biggest red his son ever caught, first bull red, first flounder and a good amount of meat to take home.

I will definitely be fishing again before Christmas but I have nothing else on the books for the rest of the year. Unless the phone rings I ended the year in style.

If I do not put up another post before then have a Merry Christmas and a happy New year. Above all Stay Safe!

[email protected] By Paula JohnsonHi Everyone!

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoyed the company of your family and friends. We had a very nice Thanksgiving. Although we didn’t get to see all the family members we wanted to. Like so many other families, some have moved quite a distance away and it is hard to get everyone together at the same time. Oh well, that’s the way it goes. Now, we are all looking forward to Christmas! This year Dion’s (our grandson) list isn’t as long. But, what’s on the list is more expensive. As far Carlea’ (our granddaughter), it’s both long and expensive! Gotta love them! And we all know they will 98% of what they want. We do tend to spoil our grandchildren.

As usual, Carlea’ wanted to paint for her class again this year. So this is what we have on the painting table. We decided to paint Santa mittens this year. They are going to have either a Snowman, Penguin, or Gingerbread on them. We will add snow flakes to them after they are highlighted and shaded with the various colors that are needed. Then we are going to add some SnowTex to the top of the glove to give it a little more dimension. To finish it off and give it some sparkle, we will sprinkle them with diamond dust over the wet varnish. As usual, she will put the year and grade on the back of each ornament. We still have a lot of work to do on these, they are far from being finished. Carlea’ is taking a lot of pride and patience in helping to paint these. The faces of the Snowman, Penguin, and Gingerbread are Renee Mullins’s design. The Santa mitten I purchased from a painting friend. These are super simple to make.

From my family to yours, Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Well, that’s our project for this time. So, what will your next project be? Mine…I really don’t know. But I know it will be fun!

Ears of chihuahua, fur like silk and the disposition of a gentle giant, gorgeous Gracey is one of the sweetest girls you’ll ever know. To meet her is to fall instantly in love with her. She’s about a year old and not quite ready for her new home. She’ll be fixed in a couple of weeks and, if she’s the right girl for you, she can be home in plenty of time for the holidays. Stop by and meet gorgeous Gracey today!

Shirley is a spunky, older girl who wants nothing more than to sit in your lap and love, love, love on you! She was picked up by LA/SPCA on Nov 3rd at 4420 Lonely Oaks Drive in New Orleans East. She has a PAWS microchip number but the owner never registered the chip. No one stepped forward looking for Shirley so she’s in search of her next big adventure with a new family.

Meet Star! She is a beautiful 4 year old Shepherd mix. Star plays well with other male dogs her size but doesn’t really like female dogs. She would also do best in a home with no cats. Star enjoys going on long walks and playing in water. She loves getting her belly rubbed and being brushed. :) Star is spayed, micro-chipped, and up to date on shots. Come meet Star at PAWS today!

This lovable feline is Tabitha. She is laidback and mellow when it’s time for a nap. Laying in your lap would be the perfect spot for her. When it’s playtime, Tabitha likes to play with all kinds of toys and climbing. Having a cat tree would be great fun for her and you as you watch her have so much fun! Can Tabitha come home with you?

Is Coco crazy cute or what?? She is such a sweetie! If you need cheering up or someone to get crazy with, Coco is your girl. She is lovable, friendly, and frisky. Can you give Coco a forever home?

All of these beautiful babies are available for adoption at

455 F Edward Hebert Blvd in Belle Chasse La!

Tuesday through Saturday 11am-5pm.

Fall Into Fitness 2014 has ended and the stats are incredible - 404.5 pounds and 497 inches lost. Strength, determination, consistency and perseverance of 70 individuals have led to amazing results and undeniable success. The work these individuals have put in over the past 8 weeks is obvious, on every smaller hip, waist and thigh. The attitude of the group as a whole is the biggest change of all – SMILES from ear to ear.

The banquet began with a compilation of some substantial numbers including: laps run in the parking lots, number of flights of stairs climbed, minutes planks were held, hours of training, miles run in races, and countless push-ups, crunches, sit ups and burpees. Emotional speeches were made by select participants who spoke on overcoming real life obstacles and finding a way to make the program work for them, further inspiring others to continue toward their goals. Certificates were given to each participant, by their team trainer, for sticking it out and working hard for their results. A board member then gave an update on the upcoming additions to the Y, including a gymnasium and running track. All present applauded.

Finally, the winners were announced. First place went to BLUE TEAM, with second place going to PURPLE TEAM and third place to GREEN TEAM. Individual winners were: MOST POINTS – Meri – with over 220, BIGGEST LOSER FEMALE – Tara and BIGGEST LOSER MALE – Chad – who each lost over 20lbs and 15 inches. The challenge has concluded and with that the establishment of TEAM FIT. As everyone ate, drank and carried on merrily, participants spoke of how this was just the beginning for them and they would be back at the Y on Monday.
