1. Open Client and put in the following information to establish connection with the Platespin server.

3. On the menu bar go to Tools – Options… and configure default settings for Platespin Suite Client.

4. Click the Notification Service tab and configure SMTP server settings.

5. Click the Default Job Values tab and configure ESX Variables and VMware Server Variables. Also set Take Control Duplex Settings to 100 MB or 1000 MB Full Duplex. (Typical for most source server environments.) Note: the next three pics show settings.

6. On the menu bar click on Tools – License Manager…

a. You can manage available license keys on the License Manager’s Available License Keys tab. Here licenses can be added, removed and monitored for remaining conversions available.

7. Portability Suite’s Network Discovery feature automatically populates Portability Suite Client with a list of Windows physical and virtual machines that are online. The Network Discovery feature is enabled by default.

If all the source workload and targets are visible in the view, goto step 9.

8. To do a manual discovery, perform the following steps.

a. On the Portability Suite toolbar, click Discover Details.

b. In the Discover Details dialog box, type the hostname or IP address of the source or target. (IP address is generally preferred).

c. Select the machine type and provide administrator credentials for the machine you arediscovering.

d. Select the check box save.

e. Click Discover and wait for the process to complete.

9. Right click on server to be migrated (Source server) and select “Move…” from the menu

a. The Action window opens:

b. Make sure Move Workload radio button is highlighted and select target and click advanced button.

c. The following screen will be displayed.

d. Click on General under Job Configuration and select Live Transfer and select File Based.

e. Now Click end state tab

a. Source Machine Post Conversion Action – “Shutdown” radio button selected

b. Target Virtual Machine End State – “Power On” radio button selected

f. Select “Schedule” tab and select “Run at a later time” radio button.

a. Set desired start date and time in drop down box.

g. Select “Credentials” tab and enter User Name and Password for Source and Target servers.

h. Select “Take Control” tab and click “Configure” button on target VM.

i. On “Mapping” tab select appropriate VLAN ID from drop down box

j. On “TCP/IP Settings” tab select “Use the following IP address:” and enter:

a. IP address: (note: this is the IP address for the target VM)

b. Subnet mask:

c. Default gateway:

d. Preferred DNS server:

e. Alternate DNS server:

10. Click on General under VMware ESX Virtual Machine Configuration

a. Verify Virtual Machine Name: correct

b. Select Datastore to contain VM in dropdown box

c. Verify path

d. Edit Virtual Machine Memory Allocation

e. Install VMware Tools checkbox checked

f. Select Virtual Devices SCSI Drives dropdown and choose appropriately for O/S.

11. Click Advanced… button and select “1” for “Number of CPUs:” in dropdown box.

12. Select Guest NIC 1 under Network Configuration

a. On “Mapping” tab select appropriate VLAN ID from drop down box and check Start Connected checkbox.

b. On “TCP/IP Settings” tab select “Use the following IP address:” and enter:

i. IP address: (note: this is the IP address for the target VM)

ii. Subnet mask:

iii. Default gateway:

iv. Preferred DNS server:

v. Alternate DNS server

13. Select Windows Services (Target) under Operating System and Application Configuration.

a. Change Windows Services (Target) Start Mode on services that need to be managed. (Typically any Hardware Specific services should be disabled here. Also the McAfee Framework Service, Network Associates McShield and Network Associates Task Manager must be set to Disabled and the checkbox “Restore original setting after the conversion is complete” must be checked. Disable any other services that may have a negative effect on the migration.

14. Select Live Transfer Services (Source) under Operating System and Application Configuration.

a. Check the Stopped box for the McAfee Framework Service, Network Associates McShield and Network Associates Task Manager. Include any other services that may have a negative effect on the migration.

15. Select Hard Drives under Drive Configuration.

a. Match Datastore name with Datastore used in Step above.

b. If the server contains a C:\ and additional partition (such as D:\) click the “Add” button and select the same Datastore as above.

c. In the “Select volumes to copy and size:” Resize drives as needed and map drives To Disk. 1 for C:\ ; 2 for D:\ etc.

16. Click on save (drop down) and save as servername.job

17. To start the saved job, click load job and select <servername.job> and click open.

18. Carefully review the job configuration then click Start.

19. In the left pane of the Platespin client console click on Jobs to view migration status and progress. The display will change to show the Jobs view. Here jobs can be monitored and intervention can take place in the event a job needs assistance.

20. At the completion of a successful migration an e-mail will be sent providing migration status. If the migration needs attention during the process and e-mail will also be delivered stating what type of attention is needed.
