Jubilee Year of Mercy Last Sunday’s “Parable of the rich fool” delivered a compelling reason to do the right thing—now: “You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you” (Luke 12:20). Today, Jesus warns us: “You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come” (12:40). Though we do not know when our Master will come, we do know what our Master expects to find. Jesus expects us to be vigilant (12:37) and diligent (12:42) in our work for the kingdom, but also filled with reverent mercy toward our fellow servants and ourselves. Hopefully, Jesus’ warning not to get drunk and beat each other up (12:45) does not apply to us literally! But what changes do I need to make, right now, so that the many people outside “the Master’s house” will want to come inside to experience the healing comfort of Jesus’ own mercy in the compassion of Jesus’ mod-ern-day disciples? —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. OUR FATHER IN FAITH The Letter to the Hebrews today sings a hymn of praise to Abraham and to his faith, upon which are founded the religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Abraham is called “father” in faith by more people on earth than an-ybody else, numerous as the sands of the seashore or the stars of the heavens. Hebrews tells us it was this founda-tional faith that led Abraham to obey God’s call when he heard it, though he was called to journey to a land he did not know and told he would father a mighty race through a marriage he thought was barren. But Abraham’s faith, the author of Hebrews tells us, was his realization of what he hoped for, and the evidence of what he could not see. How often are we, in simple daily events of our own Christian vocation, called to an unfamiliar place or told we are to do something we do not believe we can? How fortunate we are to have Father Abraham as our guide and example! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Tuesday: St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) Wednesday: St. Lawrence

Thursday: St. Clare Friday: St. Jane Frances de Chantal

Saturday: Ss. Pontian and Hippolytus; Blessed Virgin Mary

Some very important questions we should all be asking ourselves at St. Joseph the Worker

parish:

being presented to God as “my sacrificial gift” something that is truly sacrificial and thus pleasing to God? Or am I offering God scraps or my leftovers? • Is not my God and the support of my Catholic parish church where people are being spiritually fed, nourished, renewed, reconciled and being healed by God not worthy of 2 hours of my 40 hours worth of wages? • Is 2 hours out of 40 hours or 5% of my weekly in-come really just too much to give back to God in gratitude for all the blessings I receive, especially when everything we receive from God is a gift in itself? Please seriously and prayerfully reconsider your Sunday offerings, as it is your personal sacrifice that is being presented to God for the support and help of His Church. St. Joseph, pray for us.

—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. LOS SANTOS Y OTRAS CELEBRACIONES Lunes: Santo Domingo

Miércoles: San Lorenzo Jueves: Santa Clara

Viernes: Santa Juana Francisca de Chantal Sábado: Santos Ponciano e Hipólito;

Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happi-ness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought af-ter, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the inter-cession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.
