  • 2 Feb. 8-9, 2020 St. Charles Bor omeo Catholic Church

Siempre me hace reír.

A veces podemos olvidar

From time to time, someone will come up to me and say, “Father, you’re the priest who married my daughter.” It always makes me chuckle. Though I know what they mean, I want to reassure them that I am celibate and I’ve never married anyone. That is not just semantics. I have never once celebrated the sacrament of marriage. In marriage, the person who celebrates the sacrament is not the priest or deacon. The couple themselves are the celebrants of the sacrament. If you are married, then you have celebrated the one sacrament that I, as a priest, will never celebrate.

I bring this up in light of the fact that Feb. 9 is World Marriage Day. Sometimes we can forget how amazing the sacrament of marriage is. It gets reduced to a social convention. Marriage is a sacrament. Like all the sacraments, it is a source of God’s grace, blessings, and life in the world. As St. Paul says in his Letter to the Ephesians, the love between husband and wife, when lived properly, is the best sign we have of the way that Christ loves the Church.

The theme of this year’s World Marriage Day is “Stories from the Domestic Church.” We refer to the family as the domestic church because it is the place where everything that happens in the Church at large occurs. Prayer, service, obedience to God’s commands, teaching the faith, and love of God and neighbor should be hallmarks of our families, the domestic church, just as they are part of the Church as a whole. The Catechism also refers to families as a school and, in particular, says that it is a school of love, forgiveness, and prayer.

Families are schools of love. It is in our family that we learn what it means to love, not just in words but in actions. We learn how to sacrifi ce for the good of another, to overcome selfi shness to love one another. We learn how to love people even in their weaknesses and mistakes. As schools of love, families must also be schools of forgiveness. True love means loving people in spite of their imperfections. All of us are imperfect. All of us sin and need forgiveness. Families are supposed to be places where we learn how to forgive and also where we learn that we can be loved and forgiven even when we do wrong.

Forgiveness is diffi cult, and for this reason our families also need to be schools of prayer. Only in prayer do we fi nd the grace and the strength to love and forgive as we should. For our families to truly be the domestic church, prayer must be at the heart. It is important for families to pray together, not just rote prayers before meals or before bed, but also other times of prayer together as a family in your own words.

As we celebrate World Marriage Day, we pray for all married couples, that through the grace of their sacrament, they may truly form the domestic church in the world to build up the Kingdom of God.

  • 6 Feb. 8-9, 2020 St. Charles Bor omeo Catholic Church

After the teaching of the Beatitudes, Jesus uses the now familiar metaphors of salt and light to describe the life of discipleship. We take salt and light for granted in our society, but these commodities were more precious in ancient cultures.

Just as now, salt was used in Jesus’ time for fl avoring, as a preservative, and as a healing agent. Similarly, the widespread use of electricity in the modern world makes us less aware of the value and importance of light in our lives.

Still, our familiarity with this passage from Matthew’s Gospel speaks well to the abiding power of the imagery that Jesus presented.

Jesus’s call to be salt for the earth and light for the world powerfully states our mission as Church and as Christians. Our commitment to social justice fl ows from the exhortation that Jesus gives us in today’s Gospel. Some of the activities that this commitment leads us to are given more concrete expression as the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. When we feed the

hungry, clothe the naked, console those who mourn, and so on, we show ourselves to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world.

When we do these things with the community of faith, the Church, we are indeed acting as “a city set on a mountain” that cannot be hidden!
