Happy New Year Pleasant Valley Families, We hope you had a restful Winter Break spending time with family and friends. January is a very steady time of year for teachers and students. Routines and procedures are in place, and everyone is settled into a more rigorous academic routine. Regular attendance is always important, and especially in the coming months. Please maintain com-munication with your child’s teacher about school expecta-tions, homework and other important classroom and school events.

If you happen to clean out your children’s bookshelves over the break, please bring in your gently used books for our CARE Books program. We especially need books suitable for 5th and 6th graders. We are fortunate to have a num-ber of volunteers helping with the CARE and Books and Be-yond Programs, and we thank you for supporting our school’s reading programs.

Watch for information coming soon regarding spring con-ferences, Smarter Balanced testing, and our annual Multi-cultural Fair! All are important things to discuss with your child. As always, please call if you have any questions or con-cerns.

THE PBIS MINUTE: (Positive Behavior Intervention Support)

Character Strength: Gratitude Recognizing and showing appreciation for others and opportunities. Hello PV Families! We hope you had a wonderful holiday season. We are excited to have students back at school! This month we will be focus-ing on gratitude and ways we can show gratitude at school, at home, and in our community. Gratitude means to recognize and show appreciation for others and for things we have as well as for opportunities we are given. Please take a moment to talk to your student about gratitude. The transition back to school in January can be difficult for many students. They need to get back into the “routine” of things. One of the ways we address this issue at PV is to revis-it our expectations in all areas of the building. During “Expectation Stations” classes rotate through several different stations (Cafe, Playground, Hallways etc…). We do this 3 times a year to help remind students of what kind of behavior we want to see in those areas. This activity has proven to be an effective tool in getting students back on the same page and READY TO LEARN! Ask your students to tell you the 3 school rules and quiz them on what the expectations are in certain areas of the building. (Hint: 3 school rules - Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible). Other school expectations we have are, “Zip, Fold, Front” when we walk through the hall. This means our mouths are closed, our arms are folded or in our pockets and we are al-ways facing front when we walk anywhere in our building. sist during our lunch recess times. If you

have some free time in the middle of the

school day we would love to hear from

you. Any availability welcomed; once per

week, once every two weeks, etc.

We have three lunch recess periods:

11:15 am—11:35 am

11:40 am—12:00 pm

12:05 am—12:25 pm

Our first recess has the greatest need at

this time, but we welcome you to any of

these recesses.

There will be a training for this and we will

need you to fill out a Criminal History

Background Check packet.

FOOD DRIVE

Thank you to everyone for

your generous donations of food during this holiday season. With your help, we were able to donate food boxes to Food For Families, which provides food for Centennial families.

DRESS FOR THE WEATHER

P lease send your children to school prepared for the outside weather conditions. Students go out-side for recess daily. Walking to the bus, or waiting for it can be cold on these winter days. Consider the benefit of warm hats, mittens or gloves and a warm jacket. It is your child’s responsibility to re-member their coats and things at recess. Please remember to put your child’s name in their coats or jackets!

Hello PV Families! I am excited to tell you about three special music events coming up in the New Year: Multicultural Fair: Thursday, February 9th @ 5:30PM Grades K, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5/6 will each be per-forming one piece for you at this year's Multicul-tural Fair. Specific performance times and details are coming soon. Third and Fifth Grade Program: Thursday, March 9th @ 6:30PM Our Third and Fifth Grades will be combining this year to present a special music program called, Wangari's Trees of Peace: A True Story from Africa. Be sure to mark this date in your calendar! Fifth and Sixth Grade Chorus Concert: Thursday, April 27th @ 6:30PM Our Fifth and Sixth Grade students will have an opportunity to join the Pleasant Valley Chorus this spring. Rehearsals will be held after school, once a week, from 2:15-3:00PM, beginning in mid-February. If you are able to arrange trans-portation home, please encourage your student to join!
