* As their territory expanded the Muslims set up military camps and continued to conquer more areas.

* Ali ibn Abu Talib, Muhammad's cousin became the fourth caliph in 656. He made many enemies and was assassinated.

* The leadership of the early Muslims was known as a caliphate.

* In the Umayyad Dynasty caliph rule was passed down within the family.

* They moved the capital from Medina to Damascus and the caliph ruled more like a king.

* The caliphate reaches its greatest size. Their armies conquered North African and Spain.

* As the caliphate expanded relationships between Arabs and non-Arabs change.

* Arabs interact with Christians, Jews, Greeks and Persians.

* The Abbasid Dynasty overthrew the Umayyad Dynasty in 750 AD.

* They build a new capital of Baghdad (is located in present day Iraq). Baghdad became the center of art, science and learning.

* During their time in power they expanded the government of the Abbasid and opened up government services to non-Arabs.

* The Abbasid Dynasty became known as the Golden Age because of the accomplishments in art, architecture and literature.

* In 756 Spain fought and became independent of the Abbasid caliphate.

* This weakened the Abbasid hold in Europe.

* In the 900s AD Turkish tribes invade Abbasid territory and take over Baghdad.

* In the 1200s Mongols attacked Baghdad and massacred the caliphate that was still there.

* The Mongol invasion shattered the caliphate.

* Small Islamic states survived, each governed by its own sultan. The most powerful was the Ottoman Empire.

* In the 1300s, the Ottomans attack the Byzantine Empire.

* They took over Constantinople in 1453. (Renamed it Istanbul).

* They controlled The lands of Eastern Europe and Egypt until the 1900s
