GENERAL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

In countries that have a warm and dryclimate there is a significant risk of fire.We therefore fit certain mufflers with a sparkarrestor mesh. Check whether the muffleron your machine is fitted with this kind ofmesh.

For mufflers, it is very important that youfollow the instructions on checking, main-taining, and servicing your machine.Never use a machine that has a faultymuffler.

Stop switchMake sure the engine stops when you pushand hold the stop switch.

Cutting attachment guard

This guard is intended to prevent looseobjects from being thrown towards theoperator. The guard also protects theoperator from accidental contact with thecutting attachment.

Check that the guard is undamaged and notcracked. Replace the guard if it has beenexposed to impact or is cracked.

Always use the recommended guard for thecutting attachment you are using. See the“Technical data” section.

Use of incorrectly wound trimmer line or anincorrect cutting attachment increases thelevel of vibration.

WARNING: Never use a cuttingattachment without an approvedguard. See the section on “Technicaldata”. If an incorrect or faulty guardis fitted this can cause seriouspersonal injury.

WARNING: Overexposure tovibration can lead to circulatorydamage or nerve damage in peoplewho have impaired circulation.Contact your doctor if you experi-ence symptoms of overexposure tovibration. Such symptoms includenumbness, loss of feeling, tingling, pricking, pain, loss of strength, changes in skin color or condition. These symptoms normally appearin the fingers, hands or wrists. Therisk increases at low temperatures.

GENERAL SAFETY PRECAUTIONSSharpening grass cutters andgrass blades

S See the cutting attachment packaging forcorrect sharpening instructions. Sharpenblades and cutters using a single--cut flat file.

S Sharpen all edges equally to maintain thebalance of the blade.

Check the cutting attachment for damageor cracks. A damaged cutting attachmentshould always be replaced.

WARNING: Always discard ablade that is bent, twisted, cracked, broken or damaged in any otherway. Never attempt to straightena twisted blade so that it can be re-used. Only use original blades ofthe specified type.

Trimmer head

S Only use the recommended cutting at-tachments. See the section on “Technicaldata”.

IMPORTANT!Always ensure the trimmer line is woundtightly and evenly around the drum, other-wise the machine will generate harmfulvibration.

S Smaller machines generally require smalltrimmer heads and vice versa. This is be-cause when clearing using trimmer linethe engine must throw out the trimmerline radially from the trimmer head andovercome the resistance of the grassbeing cleared.

S The length of the trimmer line is also im-portant. A longer trimmer line requiresgreater engine power than a shortertrimmer line of the same diameter.

S Make sure that the cutter on the trimmerguard is intact. This is used to cut thetrimmer line to the correct length.

S To increase the life of the trimmer line itcan be soaked in water for a couple ofdays. This will make the line tougher sothat it lasts longer.

General rules

Only use cutting attachments with theguards we recommend! See the section onTechnical data.

Keep the teeth of the blade correctly sharp-ened! Follow our instructions and use therecommended file gauge. An incorrectlysharpened or damaged blade increases therisk of accidents.

IMPORTANT!This section describes the basic safety pre-cautions for working with trimmers. If youencounter a situation where you are uncer-tain how to proceed you should ask an ex-pert. Contact your servicing dealer.Avoid all usage which you consider to bebeyond your capability. You must understand the difference betweenforestry clearing, grass clearing and grasstrimming before use.

Basic safety rules

1. Look around you:S To ensure that people, animals or otherthings cannot affect your control of themachine.

S To ensure that people, animals, etc.,do not come into contact with the cut-ting attachment or loose objects thatare thrown out by the cutting attach-ment.

S CAUTION! Do not use the machineunless you are able to call for help inthe event of an accident.

2. Do not use the machine in bad weather, such as dense fog, heavy rain, strongwind, intense cold, etc. Working in badweather is tiring and often brings addedrisks, such as icy ground, unpredictablefelling direction, etc.

3. Make sure you can move and stand safely.Check the area around you for possible ob-stacles (roots, rocks, branches, ditches, etc.)in case you have to move suddenly. Takegreat care when working on sloping ground.

4. Switch off the engine before moving toanother area. Fit the transport guard beforecarrying or transporting the equipment anydistance.

5. Never put the machine down with the enginerunning or while the cutting attachment isrotating.

WARNING: Sometimes branchesor grass get caught between theguard and cutting attachment.Always stop the engine beforecleaning.

WARNING: Neither the operatorof the machine nor anyone elsemay attempt to remove the cut ma-terial while the engine is running orthe cutting equipment is rotating,as this can result in serious injury.Stop the engine and cutting equip-ment before you remove materialthat has wound around the bladeshaft as otherwise there is a risk ofinjury. The bevel gear can get hotduring use and may remain so for awhile afterwards. You could getburned if you touch it.

WARNING: Watch out forthrown objects. Always wear ap-proved eye protection. Never leanover the cutting attachment guard.Stones, rubbish, etc. can be thrownup into the eyes causing blindnessor serious injury. Keep unautho-rised persons at a distance. Chil-dren, animals, onlookers and help-ers should be kept outside thesafety zone of 15 metres. Stop themachine immediately if anyone ap-proaches. Never swing the ma-chine around without first checkingbehind you to make sure noone iswithin the safety zone.

The ABC of clearingS Always use the correct equipment.S Make sure the equipment is well adjusted.S Follow the safety precautions.S Organise your work carefully.S Always use full throttle when starting to cutwith the blade.

WORKING TECHNIQUES

Grass trimming with a trimmer headTrimming

S Hold the trimmer head just above the groundat an angle. It is the end of the trimmer linethat does the work. Let the trimmer line workat its own pace. Never press the trimmerline into the area to be cut.

S The trimmer line can easily remove grassand weeds up against walls, fences, treesand borders, however it can also damagesensitive bark on trees and bushes, anddamage fence posts.

S Reduce the risk of damaging plants byshortening the trimmer line to 10--12 cmand reducing the engine speed.

S When trimming you should use less thanfull throttle so that the trimmer line lastslonger and to reduce the wear on thetrimmer head.

Grass clearing using a grass blade

S Grass blades and grass cutters must not beused on woody stems.

S A grass blade is used for all types of tall orcoarse grass.

S The grass is cut down with a sideways, swinging movement, where the movementfrom right--to--left is the clearing stroke andthe movement from left--to--right is the returnstroke. Let the left--hand side of the blade(between 8 and 12 o’clock) do the cutting.

S If the blade is angled to the left when clear-ing grass, the grass will collect in a line, which makes it easier to collect, e.g. byraking.

S Try to work rhythmically. Stand firmly withyour feet apart. Move forward after the re-turn stroke and stand firmly again.

S Let the support cup rest lightly against theground. It is used to protect the blade fromhitting the ground.

S Reduce the risk of material wrappingaround the blade by following these in-structions:S Always work at full throttle.S Avoid the previously cut material duringthe return stroke.

S Stop the engine, unclip the harness andplace the machine on the ground beforeyou start to collect the cutmaterial.

Clearing

S The clearing technique removes all un-wanted vegetation. Keep the trimmerhead just above the ground and tilt it. Letthe end of the trimmer line strike theground around trees, posts, statues andthe like. CAUTION! This techniqueincreases the wear on the trimmer line.

S The trimmer line wears quicker and mustbe fed forward more often when workingagainst stones, brick, concrete, metalfences, etc., than when coming into con-tact with trees and wooden fences.

Cutting

S The trimmer is ideal for cutting grass thatis difficult to reach using a normal lawnmower. Keep the trimmer line parallel tothe ground when cutting. Avoid pressingthe trimmer head against the ground asthis can ruin the lawn and damage thetool.

Page 19: Please read these instructions and make sure you ... · PDF filePlease read these instructions and make sure you understand them before using the machine. Lire attentivement et bien

19

WORKING TECHNIQUESS Do not allow the trimmer head to con--stantly come into contact with the groundduring normal cutting. Constant contactof this type can cause damage and wearto the trimmer head.

Sweeping

S The fan effect of the rotating line can beused for quick and easy clearing up.Hold the trimmer line parallel to andabove the area to be swept and movethe tool to and fro.

S When cutting and sweeping you shoulduse full throttle to obtain the best results.

WARNING: Neither the operatorof the machine nor anyone else mayattempt to remove the cut materialwhile the engine is running or thetrimmer line is rotating, as this canresult in serious injury. Stop theengine and trimmer head before youremove material that has woundaround the drive shaft as otherwisethere is a risk of injury. The bevelgear can get hot during use and mayremain so for a while afterwards. Youcould get burned if you touch it.

WARNING: Watch out for thrownobjects. Always wear eye protection.Never lean over the cutting attach-ment guard. Stones, rubbish, etc.can be thrown up into the eyescausing blindness or serious injury.Keep unauthorized persons at a dis-tance. Children, animals, onlookersand helpers should be kept outsidethe safety zone of 15 metres. Stopthe machine immediately if anyoneapproaches.

MAINTENANCE

Muffler

CAUTION! Muffler is fitted with a catalyticconverter designed to reduce harmful ex-haust gases.

The muffler is designed to reduce the noiselevel and to direct the exhaust gases awayfrom the operator. The exhaust gases arehot and can contain sparks, which maycause fire if directed against dry and com-bustible material.Mufflers are equipped with a special sparkarrestor mesh. The mesh should bechecked and, if necessary. cleaned by aservicing dealer. If the mesh is damaged,it should be replaced.

CarburetorYour Jonsered product has been designedand manufactured to specifications that re-duce harmful emissions. After the enginehas used 8--10 tanks of fuel, the engine willbe run--in. To ensure that it continues to runat peak performance and to minimize harm-ful exhaust emissions after the run--in peri-od, ask your servicing dealer to adjust yourcarburetor.

The owner is responsible for the perfor-mance of all required maintenance asdefined in the operator’s manual.

WARNING: The complete clutch, clutch cover, and shaft must befitted before the machine is started, otherwise parts could come looseand cause personal injury.

Function

S The carburetor governs the engine’sspeed via the throttle control. Air and fuelare mixed in the carburetor.

S The T--screw regulates the throttle settingat idle speed. If the T--screw is turnedclockwise this gives a higher idle speed;turning it counterclockwise gives a loweridle speed.

Basic settingS The basic carburetor settings are ad-justed during testing at the factory. Fineadjustment should be carried out by askilled technician.

Rec. idle speed:See “Technical data” section.Recommended max. speed:See “Technical data” section.

CAUTION! If the cutting attachment rotateswhen the engine is idling the idle adjustmentscrew T should be turned counterclockwiseuntil the cutting attachment stops.

Idle SpeedScrew--T

WARNING: If the idle speed can-not be adjusted so that the cuttingattachment stops, contact your ser-vicing dealer. Do not use the ma-chine until it has been correctly ad-justed or repaired.

Unit/Maintenance SafetyDisconnect the spark plug before perform-ing maintenance, except carburetor adjust-ments.

WARNING: Improper mainte-nance could result in serious enginedamage or in serious injury.

Fine adjustment of the idle speed--TAdjust the idle speed using the idle adjust-ment screw--T if it is necessary to readjust.First, turn the idle adjustment screw--Tclockwise until the cutting attachment startsto rotate. Then, turn the screw counter-clockwise until the cutting attachment stops. The idle speed is correctly adjusted whenthe engine will run smoothly in every posi-tion. The idle speed should also be wellbelow the speed at which the cutting attach-ment starts to rotate.

WARNING: The cutting attach-ment may be spinning during carbu-retor adjustments. Wear your protec-tive equipment and observe all safe-ty instructions. Be sure the cuttingattachment stops turning when theengine idles. When the unit is turnedoff, make sure the cutting attach-ments has stopped before the unit isset down.

MAINTENANCE

Air filter

The air filter must be regularly cleaned toremove dust and dirt in order to avoid:S Carburetor malfunctionsS Starting problemsS Loss of engine powerS Unnecessary wear to engine partsS Excessive fuel consumption

Clean the filter every 25 hours, or moreregularly if conditions are exceptionallydusty.Cleaning the air filterRemove the air filter cover and take out thefilter. Wash it clean in warm, soapy water.Rinse thoroughly. Ensure that the filter is drybefore refitting it.An air filter that has been in use for a longtime cannot be cleaned completely. Thefilter must therefore be replaced with a newone at regular intervals. A damaged airfilter must always be replaced.

If the mesh is frequently blocked, this canbe a sign that the performance of the cata-lytic converter is impaired. Contact yourservicing dealer to inspect the muffler. Ablocked mesh will cause the machine tooverheat and result in damage to the cylin-der and piston.

Muffler bolts

CAUTION! Never use a machine that hasa faulty or loose muffler. Ensure the mufflerbolts are tight.

Spark arrestor mesh

WARNING: Mufflers fitted withcatalytic converters get very hotduring use and remain so for sometime after stopping. This also ap-plies at idle speed. Contact can re-sult in burns to the skin. Rememberthe risk of fire!

WARNING: The inside of themuffler contain chemicals that maybe carcinogenic. Avoid contact withthese elements in the event of adamaged muffler.

WARNING: Bear in mind that:Engine exhaust fumes contain car-bon monoxide, which can causecarbon monoxide poisoning. Forthis reason you should not start orrun the machine indoors, or any-where that is poorly ventilated. The exhaust fumes from the engineare hot and may contain sparkswhich can start a fire. Never startthe machine indoors or near com-bustible material!

Spark plug

The spark plug condition is influenced by:S Incorrect carburetor adjustment.S An incorrect fuel mixture (too much or in-correct type of oil).

S A dirty air filter. These factors cause deposits on the sparkplug electrodes, which may result in operat-ing problems and starting difficulties. If the machine is low on power, difficult tostart or runs poorly at idle speed: alwayscheck the spark plug first before takingany further action.

If the spark plug is dirty, clean it and checkthat the electrode gap is 0,6 mm. The sparkplug should be replaced after about a monthin operation or earlier if necessary.

0,6 mm

CAUTION! Always use the recommendedspark plug type! Use of the wrong sparkplug can damage the piston/cylinder.

MAINTENANCE

Bevel gear

The bevel gear is filled with the right quan-tity of grease at the factory. However, be-fore using the machine you should checkthat the bevel gear is filled three--quartersfull with grease. Use JONSERED specialgrease.

The grease in the bevel gear does not nor-mally need to be changed except if repairsare carried out.

Sharpening grass cutters andgrass blades

S See the cutting attachment packaging forcorrect sharpening instructions.

S Sharpen blades and cutters using asingle--cut flat file.

S Sharpen all edges equally to maintain thebalance of the blade.

WARNING: Always stop the en-gine before doing any work on thecutting attachment. This continuesto rotate even after the throttle hasbeen released. Ensure that the cut-ting attachment has stopped com-pletely and disconnect the HT leadfrom the spark plug before you startto work on it.

WARNING: Always discard ablade that is bent, twisted, cracked, broken or damaged in any otherway. Never attempt to straighten atwisted blade so that it can be re-used. Only use original blades of thespecified type.
