Semester Exams

The midyear (first semester) exam week for grades 6 – 12 will be Monday, January 26 through Thursday, January 29. Students will be provided with review sheets for each of their exams during their classes next

week. They should spend time reviewing this information as well as their course materials and ask

teachers for additional clarification if needed.

During the exam week, grades 6-12 will follow this schedule:

8:00-8:15 Seating, Attendance and Test Instructions 8:15-9:45 Exam

10:00-10:10 Seating and Test Instructions

10:10-11:40 Exam

All students are dismissed after the second exam, and are expected to leave campus. Busses will leave at

12:00, allowing students to get a snack before leaving. No students will be allowed to remain in the

building.

Ministry Exams for Grades 6, 9, and 12 For 6th & 9th grade students enrolled in First Language Arabic (students without a current Ministry exemption on file)

AIS West students in grades 6 and 9 will have to take the required Ministry exams (Arabic, Writing,

Islamic, and Arabic Social Studies). We have not yet received the exact dates from the Ministry. The exams will be in January. Students will have to take the exam at a specified school; in the past AIS

students took the Ministry exams at the Sheikh Zayed Experimental School. We will provide

transportation. For Grade 12 students without a current Ministry Exemption on file. The required Ministry exams will be held in

June.

Secondary Principal It is with very mixed feelings that I announce that I will not return for the 2015-16 school year. I am

immensely enjoying being back in Egypt, getting to know her through the context of Sheikh Zayed and the

AIS community. There are many great things going on at AIS. The Secondary school is poised for a period of growth in size, in programs, and in academic as well as social development. For reasons both

personal and professional, for reasons both in and out of my control, I have decided that I will leave AIS

at the end of this school year. I expect to have a great year, I expect to be busy well into June working to

achieve my goals in management, policy, curriculum, academics and socio-emotional areas. I expect to continue supporting your child’s education at AIS, and I expect to continue to enjoy your support of AIS.

Tardies Students

By: Mr. Bechara Aboud . Student Supervisor

Dear Parents,

Please send your kids to school early.

TARDIES students, Habitual tardiness cannot be permitted. A reasonable allowance is made for unavoidable tardiness.

Students who are tardy to school or check out early for unexcused reasons 6 times during the school year will be considered absent from school one day.

The school year at AIS WEST has approximately 180 school days. Frequent absences, late arrival or early departure can seriously affect the academic standing of a student. There are often requests to give students permission to miss school. We ask parents not to extend the period of time students are away from school,

except in emergencies.

Winter Extravaganza

Last Saturday, December 6th was the first annual Winter Extravaganza.

Grade level teams worked together to set up items to sell or games to draw in visitors with the purpose of raising money for this year’s

community service projects. The children worked hard to put on a mini

Christmas performance in the midst of this busy holiday season. Overall,

the event was successful in raising over 40,000LE for charities. This money will be used to buy items needed for each community service

project. ESMA will receive monetary donations, food for animals,

bedding for animals. APE will receive a backpack for each child that is attending its school. Each backpack will be filled with school supplies.

Various orphanages will receive books, supplies, and funds will go

towards collaborative activities.

Many thanks go to Heba Singer, our PTO guru who organised all of the outside vendors, and all of those that helped to support the

implementation of this event. We hope to continue this next year!

The National Junior Honor Society is highly competitive extracurricular activity, which consists of

students who consistently demonstrate scholarship, leadership, service, character, and citizenship

within the school and community. In June of 2014, the AIS—West Chapter of the NJHS inducted its first-ever cohort. This year the Chapter plans on inducting more members, being more visible on

campus, and completing service projects in the community.

C.O.W

The C.O.W is back and its “mooooving” around the hallways of The

American International School – West Campus. The C.O.W or Computers On Wheels is a cart of 25 MacBook Pros providing the

students at AIS West the chance to have the world of information at

their fingertips. Mrs. Stephanie Clark, technology integrationist, provides the teachers and students with opportunities in the classroom.

Planning and discussions take place before the lesson in one-on-one

meetings, or group grade level meetings. The C.O.W. has been in a

variety of classrooms from elementary to high school, provides research opportunities, and is utilized for our MAP testing. The

teachers use the C.O.W for interactive lessons, research, and

educational games to present content in another way for further understanding. With all the interactive lessons and technology tools

accessible the students are very “moootivated” to learn.

Ms. Jen’s KG2 Class.

The C.O.W visits the KG2 classes each week for the learning centers and focus on a related skills

taking place in their classroom.

Important Technology Update

The IT Department will be updating Portal Log-On information to make the Portal and Synergetic log-on

the same username/password. They will be sent home January 11th with your child.

What is the AIS West Portal?

The AIS West Portal is a tool the teachers use to provide parents with bulletins, classroom calendars,

learning resources, web resources, post assignments, receive assignments, post grades, and communicate with you and your student(s). This will become the primary way the school communicates information

with the parents, teachers, and students. This will occur slowly and be in full effect come the second

semester, February 8, 2015

This tool is accessed through logging into the school website: www.aiswest.com

What is Synergetic?

Synergetic is your access to your childs grades and for scheduling conferences. This tool is used only a few

times a year. It is accessed by going to the following website: parent.aiswest.com or on the AIS West

Portal

Kindergarten

Ms. Ginny’s Kg.1A class “has finally”

finished their Ginger Bread House. They

put it out on display at the reception. The Kg.1.A kids worked very hard and are

very proud of their very own work. They

especially liked licking the frosting of their

fingers when they were done. They all understand that this house will be donated

to an orphanage after the holidays.

Art By: Ms. Krista Cary, ES Art Teacher

Hello from the Elementary Art Room!

What has been happening in art? Here is a little peak through our window of art.

Grades 4 and 5 made paintings inspired by Jason Messinger, an American artist and author. While making these paintings, they learned about mixing tints and shades of a color with paint. While working in

groups, they learned that making the same tint or shade again can be difficult! Working in groups also gave them the chance to decide how much variety or repetition their paintings would have, and to see

whether their completed work would have the art principle of unity.

Grade 1 made paintings inspired by stained glass windows. They looked at many stained glass windows for inspiration, even the famous windows of the Notre Dame de Paris. They also learned to recognize that

some shapes found in the windows were geometric shapes, but some were organic. Then, they made their

own stained glass window paintings using geometric and organic shapes. They also mixed their own colors

for these paintings.

Grade 3 made Op art collages. They learned about the two of the most influential artists of the Op art movement – M.C. Escher and Bridget Riley. They discovered how Op art uses positive and negative space

to trick the viewers’ eyes. Their collages also make a play on positive and negative space. Grade 3 artists

had to put these collages together very carefully or the optical illusion would not occur!

Don’t forget to visit our class blog for this year, “A look through the Window of Art”, at http://mskristasartists.blogspot.com/. The blog is for students and parents. The grades 1-5 art classes also

have an Instagram, with the name “mskristasartists”. To access this, Ms. Krista must accept a request

from you or your child. Students can bring artwork for the Instagram to class, or email a picture to Ms. Krista. The Instagram is a way to encourage extending creativity at home.

Keep Creating!
