B. Summary of the Lesson Plan :

In this first grade lesson, I will teach about helping in the classroom and caring aboutothers; we will also learn about the Pledge of Allegiance, what it stands for, and how torecite it. This lesson uses the Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook School and Family.(Page 36-41)

C. Basic Information: Grade Level: 1 st grade Time to Complete this Lesson: 50 minutes Groupings: Whole group discussion on background information and vocabulary, small

group activities (reciting the Pledge of Allegiance), and individual work on jobassignments and worksheets.

D. Materials: Houghton Mifflin Social Studies Textbook, School and Family Reading Skill: Classify worksheet, Unit Resources, Unit 1 Lesson 2, Page 5 Paper & Pencils Colored paper, markers, scissors

E. Objectives:

o NV State Social Studies Standards

C13.1.3 Participate in class decision-making, i.e., individual responsibilitiesin the classroom and school.

C13.1.4 Recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

o Student-Friendly Standards I can learn the importance of helping others in the classroom through my

own job and responsibilities.

I can recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

F. Vocabulary Job work that must be done; a task or duty. Responsibility something you do because it is the right thing to do; a duty or task you

are expected to complete.

Pledge - a promise made.

G. Procedure:

1. Instruct the whole class to read and examine the pictures on pages 36 and 37. Ask:How do these pictures look the same as our playground and classroom? How are theydifferent?

2. Discuss as a whole class the definitions of a job and responsibilities and ask the studentswhat type of jobs they do at school each day? In the pictures on page 37, what types

of job are the students doing?3. Discuss the importance of why we have classroom helpers and the kinds of jobs they

do each day. Students will individually write down what a job is, and the type of jobthey do. Students can share answers.

4. Complete the Lesson 2 Reading Skill worksheet individually.

5. Give background information about the Pledge of Allegiance from page 38. Discusswhy we recite the Pledge, and what the proper form is for reciting the Pledge.

6. Instruct children to practice reciting the Pledge multiple times as a whole class.

7. Break the students up into groups of four to complete the Helping Hands tree from

page 40-41. Call groups to come and recite the Pledge to me.8. Share with the whole class some of the jobs the students wrote down for the helping

hands tree to conclude lesson.

H. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding?

I will use the jobs written on the helping hands tree to determine if studentsunderstand the importance of jobs and responsibilities.

The students ability to recite the Pledge within their small groups. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson.

By looking at the hands placed on the tree, I can determine if the studentsunderstand what a helpful and caring job is, in and out of the classroom. Byreciting the pledge within small groups, I can discover if they are reciting itaccurately.

I. Closure: Discuss with children ways how they can show they care at school and help others.

We will talk about the importance of the Pledge of Allegiance and recite it together.

J. Reflection:

1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach?

I think the easiest part of the class to teach will be the discussion about jobs.

2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach?

I think the most difficult part of the lesson will be teaching the students toaccurately memorize and recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson?

I can extend this lesson by discussing how students can use their classroom job athome with their family.

4. What ca n you do for students who dont grasp the concepts?

I can work with them individually and go over the worksheet we did, the ReadingSkill: Classify worksheet. I can also work with to learn the Pledge of Allegiance.

5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?

I think the lesson is clear and concise.

6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part?

I believe that the most difficult part was picking a strand and a standard thatmatched the lesson.

7. Describe your experience collaborating on this lesson plan.

My partner had excellent communication and was prompt, but the additional timeit took emailing back and forth to complete the lesson plan was challenging.
