Acquisitions Accelrys Acquires Aegis Analytical Corp. for $30 million in Cash 23 October 2012 Accelrys, Inc., a provider of scientific innovation lifecycle management software, announced that it has acquired Aegis Analytical Corp. (Aegis) for $30 million in cash, expanding Accelrys' portfolio with enterprise manufacturing process intelligence capabilities that provide organizations with insights into their product lifecycle processes. The addition of Aegis' software to the recently announced Accelrys Process Management and Compliance Suite fills an unmet need in the marketplace as organizations struggle to optimize their lab-to-commercialization processes, manage quality control with external collaborators and reduce compliance risk. Accelrys retained key members of the Aegis management team, along with Aegis employees, as part of the transaction. "The industries we serve are undergoing significant changes, requiring them to move from a status quo approach to one that breaks down the barriers to operational excellence, innovation productivity and global competitiveness," said Accelrys President and Chief Executive Officer Max Carnecchia. "This acquisition expands our footprint in downstream operations with valuable new solutions for electronic process intelligence, and reinforces our position as a leader in scientific innovation lifecycle management software."

Science-driven industries, especially those that operate in regulated environments, find it difficult to accelerate product development and manage complex manufacturing in real-time because they rely on an outmoded combination of paper notebooks, proprietary tools and disconnected point solutions. As a result, they also struggle to meet Quality by Design (QbD) and International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) objectives, to improve seamless technology transfer from research to manufacturing, and to deliver robust and high-quality regulatory filings. Solving these problems requires a holistic approach that enables businesses to predict, prevent and solve problems throughout the product development, quality and manufacturing process. Aegis' Discoverant software aggregates, contextualizes and analyzes manufacturing, quality and product development data, enabling quality and manufacturing organizations to gain predictive control of their processes. By adding these capabilities to Accelrys' Process Management and Compliance Suite, which includes the electronic laboratory notebook, lab execution system, electronic batch records and enterprise scientific informatics platform, Accelrys offers a unified solution that helps organizations in validated environments achieve better outcomes and breakthrough results. Importantly, with the increased visibility of process data and improved process understanding throughout the product development lifecycles, the suite also addresses two growing trends in the industry – externalization and increased investments in biologics development. "Externalization is changing the way pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, chemical and other regulated industries do business. These companies now have external partners and collaborators across the value chain, from research to manufacturing, that span the globe," said Ken Rapp, Accelrys' managing director of analytical, development, quality and manufacturing solutions. "Without visibility into their far-reaching global operations, companies risk compromising the quality of their products and noncompliance with regulatory requirements, slowing operations and significantly increasing the cost of bringing products to market." Aegis, based in Lafayette, Colo., has more than 15 years of experience in process development and manufacturing and was recognized in Gartner's "Cool Vendors in Manufacturing Operations, 2012." "This acquisition brings significant value to Aegis' customers, offering them a comprehensive software portfolio for managing the scientific innovation lifecycle and providing them access to the global resources of an industry leader," said Aegis President and Chief Executive Officer Robert Di Scipio. "The Aegis team looks forward to joining Accelrys and to working together to continue producing innovative solutions for science-driven organizations."

The Edinburgh office signifies yet another milestone in the company's history following a successful fiscal year; Actify continues to lay down the foundations for further growth. These are very exciting times for the company." David Smith, director of innovation and enterprise services, Scottish Enterprise, said: "That a globally successful company such as Actify has chosen to invest in Scotland is testament to our growing reputation as the ideal place to locate and do business. We've worked closely with ShapeSpace providing a range of support including account management and assistance with exploring new markets and overseas territories. This then led to partnership opportunities with Actify who we've supported with £100,000 of RSA to help establish a new centre of excellence for collaborative R&D in Scotland." "We know that increasingly, companies have a range of choices as to where to locate and it's our role to make sure that investors know that Scotland is very much open for business and ready to compete on an international scale. Autodesk Ranks #6 Among IT Companies on Newsweek Magazine’s Green Rankings 23 October 2012 Newsweek Magazine this week recognized Autodesk, Inc. as one of the greenest companies. Autodesk was ranked #6 among information technology and services companies, and #21 overall in the top 500 U.S. companies in Newsweek’s Green Rankings. The annual Newsweek Green Rankings look at the largest publically traded companies in the U.S. and globally ranks them on performance in such areas as greenhouse gas emissions, waste reduction and management of natural resources. Using Design Thinking to Reduce Impacts Autodesk focuses its efforts on the areas where it can have the most positive impact on the future of the planet. A key component of that strategy is providing design software to those who create the built environment, supply energy and water, plan cities, and define manufacturing processes, in order to encourage sustainable project outcomes. Autodesk leads by example in its own operations by measuring and reducing its carbon footprint, and more efficiently using water, materials and other resources in its facilities and across the value chain. The company employs its own software using its buildings as a testing ground for new ideas, workflows and sustainable design solutions, strengthening the business and creating knowledge that Autodesk can share with others. In addition to Newsweek’s Green Rankings, Autodesk has been recognized for its efforts with a leadership position on the Carbon Disclosure Project’s S&P 500 index disclosure rankings; inclusion in Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI); FTSE4Good Index Series; top 10 ranking in Maplecroft’s climate innovation leaders; and an Environmental Protection Agency Green Power Leader listing.

Camtech to Show Latest Edgecam at EuroMold 2012 22 October 2012 EuroMold 2012 is the venue for European mould and die manufacturers to see the latest significant developments in Edgecam software which generates reliable, accurate toolpaths and full machine simulation using solid geometry from any major CAD system. Camtech GmbH are demonstrating Edgecam 2013 R1 on Stand J11 in Hall 8, where the latest release features a brand new wire EDM function, providing an intuitive environment for the comprehensive programming of all wire EDM machine tools. It includes a comprehensive library of proven post-processors and knowledge-based cuttings schemes as standard. Users can select from one of the pre-defined machining strategies, such as “Unattended night runs” and “Attended day ruins.” Alternatively, they can easily define their own. In addition to the new wire EDM function, a number of enhancements give added value for all Edgecam users: The industry-leading Waveform Roughing cycle now has the ability to specify a pre-drilled hole as the approach type, ensuring a smoother transition into the material, reducing the cycle time even further. Toolpaths are now generated much faster thanks to a new 5-axis 64-bit machining engine running as a separate process, utilising multiple core technology. Background processing of milling cycles in the Mill-Turn environment is now available, meaning the user can carry on working while Edgecam calculates complex toolpaths. In Turning, the new Rough Profiling cycle removes material in a series of cuts parallel to the input profile, and is typically used for roughing free-form profiles from casting and forgings. It is also useful for cutting materials where it is beneficial to minimise re-entrant cutting as it keeps the tool in contact with the material for longer. The cycle includes intelligent stock entry and exit, as well as being stock-aware to eliminate air cuts and reduce cycle time, along with supporting controller tool offsets and including options to specify a range of different offsets. Further enhancements have been made to the Edgecam Simulator, enabling the simulation process to rewind to a previous position in the machining sequence. Another time-saving feature in the Profiling cycle is the new option to specify a chamfer or radius to break sharp corners, eliminating the need for deburring. Edgecam is a certified partner for Autodesk Inventor, and 2013 R1 contains a direct interface with Autodesk Vault 2013, allowing users to manage their Edgecam files in it. Work in progress can be

tracked, and users can maintain version control over their individual jobs. Edgecam’s Vault menu gives direct access, and users can check part files in and out, and view the change history. When Edgecam files containing an Inventor model are checked out of the Vault and loaded into Edgecam, any recent changes to the Inventor model are recognised, flagging up the opportunity to update it ion the Edgecam part.

• Camtech GmbH won the Edgecam Outstanding Achievement Award at Vero Software’s Global Reseller Conference earlier this year. The award went to Camtech because of their 24% revenue growth; the fact that they are Europe's largest single Edgecam reseller, and gained an 18% growth in SMP sales.

Delcam for SolidWorks 2013 on Show at SolidWorks World 26 October 2012 Delcam will demonstrate the 2013 version of Delcam for SolidWorks, the integrated CAM system for SolidWorks, on booth 605 at SolidWorks World in Florida from 20th to 23rd January. Even though Delcam for SolidWorks is proving increasingly popular with SolidWorks users, Delcam is still keen to recruit more SolidWorks resellers for its distribution network. The 2013 release of Delcam for SolidWorks includes a new entry-level 3D milling option, plus many of the enhancements made to the 2013 version of the FeatureCAM feature-based programming system on which it is based. As a Gold Partner CAM product, it is, of course, fully compatible with the latest release of SolidWorks. Full details are available on the learning zone at www.delcam.tv/dfs2013/lz. The new entry-level 3D option includes all the 2D and 2.5D strategies available in Delcam for SolidWorks, plus the 3D single-surface strategies for Z-level roughing, with either offset or raster, and finishing with raster, isoline or spiral. It is intended mainly as an introductory level program for companies new to 3D machining but will also be useful for users that only have an occasional need for 3D capabilities or that only machine softer materials. A number of new strategies have been added to the high-speed machining module in Delcam for SolidWorks. Step cutting has been added within area clearance to remove large terraces that can be left on the part when using deeper roughing cuts. Extra toolpaths can now be generated that step back up the terrace with the existing large tool, adding extra cuts at intermediate levels. This results in more material being removed, using the same tool within the same toolpath. Automatic splitting of finishing between steep and shallow areas of the part has been enhanced with the ability to use the scallop height to control the stepover. Using this value rather than setting a constant stepover distance gives better control of the surface finish.

CIMdata PLM Industry Summary

Page 17

Both roughing and finishing strategies now incorporate an “area filter” to remove small enclosed pockets within the part from the toolpath. Any attempt to cut these areas risks damage to the tool, even though it is mathematically possible to remove the material. Delcam for SolidWorks now gives the option of using bottom-up machining for Z-level finishing as well as the conventional top-down approach. This can be useful when using a ball-nose end mill as it avoids cutting with the centre of the tool and so gives a better surface finish and longer tool life. New five-axis strategies available in Delcam for SolidWorks 2013 include flowline machining between two curves, pencil machining and corner re-machining. These options for simultaneous five-axis machining allow a better surface finish to be achieved as well as ensuring access to more areas within the part in a single set-up. New options have also been added to give smoother five-axis machining. A new look-ahead capability will remove any sudden tool-axis changes during automatic collision avoidance and, instead, ensure that a smooth transition takes place. In addition, the ability to smooth the Azimuth and Elevation axes independently is now available, allowing excessive five-axis movement to be removed. These options stabilise the rotary axis movement by maintaining a fixed tool axis as far as possible, thus replacing constant five-axis movement with a series of 3+2-axis segments having full five-axis transitions between them. Enhancements have also been made to the turning and mill-turn modules within Delcam for SolidWorks. In particular, support is now available for simultaneous b-axis turning for more complex turning operations. This allows more positioning options to be used for a single tool, so minimising tool changes and the associated dwell marks or surface blends. Delcam for SolidWorks combines the benefits associated with Delcam’s PowerMILL and FeatureCAM CAM systems. It is based on Delcam’s proven machining algorithms that are already used by more than 35,000 customers around the world. The software offers PowerMILL’s exceptional speed of toolpath calculation, plus the advanced strategies for high-speed and five-axis machining, to ensure increased productivity, maximum tool life and immaculate surface finish, even when cutting the hardest, most challenging materials. At the same time, Delcam for SolidWorks has the same strong focus on ease of use as FeatureCAM, including all of the knowledge-based automation that makes that system so consistent and reliable. Delcam for SolidWorks is fully integrated into the SolidWorks environment so that the program looks and behaves like SolidWorks. It offers full associativity so that any changes in the CAD model are reflected automatically in the toolpaths. However, this associativity is more intelligent than that offered in many other integrated CAM systems. Delcam for SolidWorks doesn’t simply modify the existing toolpaths but also reviews the choice of cutting tools and machining strategies, and changes them if necessary.

Delcam Thailand to Show Latest CAM Developments in Bangkok 25 October 22012 Delcam Thailand will demonstrate the latest developments in Delcam’s complete range of CAM software at the Metalex exhibition to be held in Bangkok from 21st to 24th November. Programs on show will include PowerMILL for high-speed and five-axis machining; FeatureCAM for quick and easy feature-based CAM programming; PartMaker for turn-mill equipment and Swiss-type lathes; the Delcam for SolidWorks integrated CAM system; and ArtCAM for artistic applications. The most important new option in the 2013 release of PowerMILL will be the new Vortex strategy for high-speed area clearance. Vortex, for which Delcam has a patent pending, has been developed by the company specifically to gain the maximum benefit from solid carbide tooling, in particular those designs that can give deeper cuts by using the full flute length as the cutting surface. It can be used for two- and three-axis roughing, three-plus-two-axis area clearance and for rest machining based on stock models or reference toolpaths. Like other Delcam roughing strategies, Vortex toolpaths are calculated to give more efficient machining by following the shape of the part and so keeping air moves to a minimum. The main change to the 2013 FeatureCAM product family has been the introduction of three levels of 3D machining functionality. FeatureMILL 3D Lite is a new option offering single-surface machining with a basic range of strategies that provides an introductory product for companies moving into 3D machining for the first time. PartMaker pioneered the field of CAM software for multi-axis turn-mill centres and Swiss-type lathes. The software offers a vast array of robust post-processors and machine-simulation files for virtually every machine model from all the leading builders. The 2013 version will feature a totally revamped surface-machining module offering PartMaker users some of the most powerful CAM machining algorithms on the market today for a variety of manufacturing platforms, including turn-mill centres, bar-fed mills and Swiss-type lathes. Delcam for SolidWorks is a fully integrated CAM system for SolidWorks that combines the benefits associated with PowerMILL and FeatureCAM. It provides PowerMILL’s exceptional speed of toolpath calculation, plus the advanced strategies for high-speed and five-axis machining, to ensure increased productivity, maximum tool life and immaculate surface finish, while also offering the same strong focus on ease of use as FeatureCAM. The 2013 release includes a new entry-level 3D milling option, plus many of the enhancements made to the 2013 version of FeatureCAM on which it is based. As a Gold Partner CAM product, it is, of course, fully compatible with the latest release of SolidWorks. The new release of ArtCAM Pro will make it much easier to create complex designs, especially those that include repeated elements that are similar but not identical within the design. This new way of working, which is called ‘Free Relief Modelling’, allows previously-created reliefs to be identified and swiftly moved, rotated, rescaled and copied, either individually or as part of a group. The overall result

Implementation Investments AECOM Saves $850,000 Using ProjectWise for Work Sharing and Engineering Content Management 25 October 2012 Bentley Systems, Incorporated announced that AECOM Technology Corporation, a global provider of professional technical and management support services for government and commercial clients, has

selected Bentley’s ProjectWise for the cloud-based engineering content management of its Texas State Highway (SH) 161 Phase 4 project. The ProjectWise system of collaboration servers and services provides industry-proven work sharing, content reuse, and dynamic review capabilities that are essential to leveraging information modeling through integrated projects for high-performing, intelligent infrastructure. The $416 million design/build project completes a 6.5-mile link in the loop around Dallas-Fort Worth, managed by the North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA). AECOM was challenged to complete the major design elements within 15 months. With the project office in Grand Prairie, Texas, and team members distributed across 22 locations in seven U.S. states, AECOM implemented ProjectWise Online to provide project team members, regardless of their location, with a single, secure environment to create high-quality design documents. ProjectWise enabled AECOM to increase quality, create documents that were 95 percent compliant with its client’s CAD standards, and reduce risk, saving NTTA $850,000 in costs associated with information, workspaces, and standards management as well as quality-control review. AECOM Chief Technology Officer Jim Walsh said, “The tremendous success of this project could not have been accomplished without the use of ProjectWise. This secure work-sharing environment reduces our business risk by ensuring the right people have access to the right information at the right time. This means decisions aren’t being made based on the wrong data, resulting in fewer change orders and their associated costs in time and money.” To deliver the SH 161 Phase 4 project on time, AECOM created a team of 12 sub-consultants and 300 colleagues located throughout the United States. Fostering communication and collaborative workflows was the key to successful project completion, but AECOM also needed an integrated design approach with one quality control system to coordinate so many firms, project team members, and offices. AECOM recommended that a cloud-based solution be implemented and selected ProjectWise Online based on the firm’s broad experience with this software on other projects. ProjectWise Online provided the team with a reliable and secure environment accessible by team members whether they were working from a home, sub-consultant, or main project office. The ProjectWise servers and services managed by Bentley allowed users to easily find, update, and share engineering content, including CAD documents, project data, PDF files, spreadsheets, and other office documents, without being slowed down by firewall, network, or FTP issues. The core component of the system was the ProjectWise Integration Server, which federates all project data regardless of storage location. Caching servers distributed files locally for fast access. “The ability of the contractor to request a change in the field, have our project office staff upload comments to ProjectWise, and have anyone, anywhere update information as needed has really helped accomplish quick turnarounds on items for the contractor,” said Brian Dodson, P.E., AECOM’s design manager for the project. “Moreover, the ProjectWise customized workspace eliminated the need for multiple CAD managers to manage separate CAD standards in each office. As a result, staff members from all offices were able to focus on the final deliverable rather than on whether it had the latest CAD standards in place. This capability alone saved the project $250,000.”

Page 32

In addition, based on the results from the 10 early milestone packages conducted in the project office, AECOM found that the decision to employ ProjectWise and eliminate travel for design review meetings saved the project approximately $600,000. The techniques implemented on this project will allow this crucial piece of infrastructure to be ready for the Dallas-Fort Worth area on time. “As a longtime user of ProjectWise on many of its projects, AECOM has benefited from the advantages this system provides in work sharing, content reuse, and dynamic review in a secure, trusted environment,” said Huw Roberts, Bentley vice president, core marketing. “But for this project, the firm needed to reduce costs and implementation time, so we were glad to offer this as an online service, eliminating the administrative costs of hosting and managing files.”

updating and maintenance of lifts, escalators and moving walkways. Its objective in choosing Lantek software for its manufacturing plant in Saragossa, Spain, was to implement a single system that was capable of programming all the different machines it uses for lift component manufacture while at the same time increasing flexibility and simplifying the manufacturing process. The strategic approach to production employed by Schindler has led it to implement the best technology available for excellence in its processes. By moving to a single software solution for programming all of its laser cutting machines, it has been able to share its workload between all its machines, which was previously very difficult, greatly increasing flexibility in the workshop. In addition, the Lantek software has made it possible to increase material utilization, reduce scrap, and implement micro jointing which makes it easier to unload and handle small components. Jesús Lazaro, Schindler's IT Manager in Saragossa says, “We have a large variety of high value machinery so it is important for us to have an advanced and innovative software infrastucture which can squeeze the utmost performance from our equipment and which is also capable of optimizing our processes. Some of our machines, particularly those used for sheet metal cutting, had rigid and, in some cases, obsolete software, which made it very difficult to generate effective CNC programs, seriously limiting the capability, versatility and productivity of our machines.” Schindler evaluated the sheet metal CAD/CAM systems on the market and selected Lantek Expert Cut as the solution most suited to its needs. The company appreciated the ease of use and intuitive interface of the Lantek software and additionally the integration of processes for design, CAD data import, nesting and rapid generation of CNC code into one flexible system. The agility of Lantek Expert Cut and the way it can integrate with all of Schindler’s machinery has greatly improved flexibility on the shop floor and also provided a valuable saving in programming time, significantly improving productivity levels, In addition to the benefits of faster programming, Jesús Lazaro comments on Lantek’s high service and skill levels, “The Lantek software operates on any make of sheet metal cutting machinery and the technical knowledge it has of all the different machines on the market is particularly important to us. Lantek has shown that its software will run all our machines and this gives us greater freedom in managing our machinery in one system, making it unnecessary to install the multiple CAD/CAM systems suggested by each machine manufacturer which can result in incompatibility and much greater training and operational overheads.”

Delcam Launches Dual-Column Version of PowerINSPECT 23 October 2012 A new module has been made available for the latest version of Delcam’s PowerINSPECT inspection software that allows the software to create efficient inspection sequences for use on dual-column CNC coordinate-measuring machines. The combination of a dual-column CMM and PowerINSPECT enables inspection times to be reduced by allowing the simultaneous measurement of different features on larger parts. A common application is automotive body-in-white inspection, where the evaluation of a large, complex and relatively symmetrical assembly requires both intricate measurements on each side combined with an assessment of the structure as a whole. Using this new module gives the ability to measure parts on these devices in a single coordinate system without repositioning. In general, the dual-column mode works in a similar manner to the single-column CNC version of PowerINSPECT: models are loaded in the same way; inspection items are created using the same methods and so on. An additional programming operation is needed to distribute the various items to be inspected between the two columns. Additions to the offline-programming and program-running capabilities provide easy tools for moving inspection items between the two columns to balance the inspection time needed for each one. The user can switch columns in much the same way that they switch probes or tools. To ensure safe operation of the CMM, the collision predictor within PowerINSPECT checks for possible collisions between columns by calculating their moves as the inspection proceeds and comparing their future positions in space and time. If any overlap is detected, the inspection is stopped and a warning displayed. This is the only reliable way to prevent collisions between columns because of factors like speed differences between the way they are programmed and the way the machines actually move. Of course, the dual-column version of PowerINSPECT offers the same comprehensive range of inspection routines for taking simple measurements, for inspection of geometric features and for analysing complex 3D surfaces. Similarly, the resulting reports present detailed information in an easy-to-read format, that can be understood by all engineers not just inspection specialists.

Easier Multi-Tool Use in Radan 2013 22 October 2012 New developments in the 2013 release of the powerful sheet metal CAD/CAM software, Radan, provide considerably improved support for multi-tools, meaning they are much easier to use. Radan General Manager Chris Aston says the traditional way of setting up multi-tools in the machine system data file is cumbersome and time-consuming. However, a major concept change in Radan 2013 provides considerable support for multi-tools. “We take the principle that a multi-tool is a tool, not a turret, which has implications as to how multi-tools are deployed by Radan and configured and manipulated by users. In Radan 2013 multi-tool

CIMdata PLM Industry Summary

Page 48

configurations are deployed by taking the ‘variable (to buy)’ for the machine tool in question. “For example, a configuration for a Trumpf machine will have the definitions – the shape and number of stations – of all multi-tools the customer may purchase for their machine tool, without allocating it to a tool station at that time. This is less work-intensive and more flexible than the traditional system of always allocating a multi-tool to a station.” The combination of all enhancements in Radan 2013 provides greater automation while still giving the user manual options if required. It contains key enhancements to the navigational tools, increasing accessibility to functions; along with improved integration of Radband; and the addition of colour making it easier to identify parts, both pre and post production. Colour: Parts in nest projects now have colour assigned to them. In total 32 different colours are distributed over the items in the parts list. The nesting colours are also used when generating the setup sheet. Nesting: Single Part Layout (SPL) has been integrated with nest projects. A new setting is available in the SPL dialog to specify whether or not to allow overproduction. Where multiple sheets are needed, SPL will generate a sheet count that will or will not satisfy the batch quantity. Where not enough parts are required to fill a sheet, if overproduction is not allowed the sheet will be left half-empty. The SPL dialog can now be used to edit a nest produced by the automatic nester with only a single part on it, to modify clearances, etc., which has not been possible previously. 3D: Third-party file formats can now be imported by ‘dropping’ a file onto the 3D window. The resulting parts will be placed at the current work space. The user confirms the material before the import is completed, along with the thickness if this is not to be calculated automatically. Radbend: New Radbend CAD interfaces for Inventor and SolidWorks have been introduced, so Radbend can be used a bend simulation tool for engineering. Radan 3D and Radbend: The improved connection between Radan 3D and Radbend allows parametric programming of parts. After a change to the 3D model in Radan 3D, the Radbend program (tool selection and fingerstop positioning) is automatically updated. Single Click Selection: In Radan 2013, geometry can be selected using just a single click. This new selection method can be used to copy geometry (jump to cursor) or grabbing parts. Chris Aston says: “Extensive research and ongoing development ensures Radan constantly enables users to gain the absolute maximum performance from their CNC machines and the CAM process for sheet

PDF3D Integrates XSL-FO for 3D Technical Report Generation 22 October 2012 The PDF3D® publishing platform completes the circle to integrate full interactive 3D models into the XSL-FO production document creation process. Integrating ECRION (www.ecrion.com) XF Designer, XF Rendering Server and XSL-FO solutions enables direct integration for embedding interactive 3D views inside managed formatted PDF documents using the PDF3D (www.pdf3d.com) publishing platform. Document work-flows can now include seamless full-function 3D content with interactive controls (Spin, Pan & Zoom) plus complete part hierarchy control and advanced features auto generated animation, automatic PMI, color point clouds, custom light sources, measurement probe, floating 3D labels, view dependent part visibility of complex models. The ability to inject rich 3D content windows exactly where needed in the PDF document, complete with functional capability like camera flight path animation will enhance the value of the information communicated which will accelerate collaboration. Improved interaction supports communicating complex data with document contextual information and adds considerable value to manufacturing, engineering, scientific or medical reporting work-flows. Precise format control is often critically important to brand, corporate image and customer perception. XSL-FO (XML Style Sheet Document Formatting Objects) is a mature standard used in today's advanced document generation systems as an intermediate step from Word DOCX, XHTML, and DocBook. XSLT transformations or ECRION’s XF Designer are used to transform document contentinto portable XSL-FO. Once generated, ECRION's leading XF Rendering Server XSL-FO engine converts the XSL-FO source document material into readable PDF format. This level of abstraction enables automatic generation of table of contents, linked references, index, hyphenation, or multi-column layout, page margins, and chapter headings. In particular, layout and placement of 3D Views can be managed at the source document level, specified as XSL-FO tags. The layout and management of 3D Views stays consistent with other document content. The PDF3D XSL-FO solution, with enterprise PDF3D XML Server, maximizes abstraction levels of XML, while inserting full rich medial content for interactive 3D PDF reports Once the 3D PDF is created, the complementary PDF3D in PowerPoint® plugin assists sharing results within a single unified presentation. The PDF document is accessible using Acrobat® or the free Adobe Reader®.

SAP Brings Enterprise Mobility and 3-D Visualization to Aerospace Manufacturing 25 October 2012 SAP AG today announced a series of new and updated products to help transform the SAP for Aerospace & Defense (SAP for A&D) solution portfolio. With these updates, SAP is accelerating the ability to provide new business value to customers in the A&D industry. The announcement was made at the Aerospace and Defense Manufacturing Summit, held in Las Vegas from October 25-26, 2012. In an environment of constant change that also requires strict regulatory compliance, A&D companies can struggle to keep engineering, manufacturing and the supply chain working together. Many still utilize paper, text and 2-D drawings as the interface for technicians, supervisors and inspectors to execute their work. This approach can be inefficient and costly to keep pace in accelerating global markets. Globalization also means that A&D companies are bringing new production facilities online in non-English-speaking regions around the world, creating a global supply chain with international partners.

"In this economy, budget pressures are increasing, requiring us to think, act and execute differently when it comes to operations, while staying focused on delivering the highest-quality products at the least possible cost," said John Patrick Batache, director, Lifecycle Systems and Support, Northrup Grumman. "Due to less rework and more efficient operations, delivery times have been reduced by 15 to 20 percent for work where the software is used." SAP enables engineering, manufacturing and supply chain departments to execute integrated end-to-end processes collaboratively in order to help optimize manufacturing processes, cut costs and improve product quality. For example, frequent engineering changes can be consistently and efficiently implemented in manufacturing to minimize production and supply chain disruptions and improve production throughput. With the introduction of mobile technology and 3-D product visualization, SAP is transforming the way information is delivered to the point-of-work on the shop floor. Technicians can receive assigned work orders, view up-to-date 3-D visual work instructions, collect required production data and complete work directly on their mobile tablet — reducing waste and improving quality. "We are helping A&D companies apply the principles of Lean and Six Sigma to information delivery," said Magnus Bjorendahl, global head, Aerospace and Defense Business Unit, SAP. "With the delivery of information on mobile devices, technicians are less frequently pulled away from their work areas, no longer forced to climb in and out of large assemblies just to update IT systems. The early adopters of these solutions have cited improved worker safety as an additional benefit." By integrating 3-D product visualization directly into SAP BusinessObjects Dashboards software and through the SAP HANA platform, SAP has retooled the way manufacturing operations can be analyzed. A&D companies can use a 3-D model of the aircraft or assembly as navigation structure or canvas when analyzing the vast amount of operational data. Through this, they can identify additional waste and anticipate production disruptions before they occur. Multi-language capability enables deployment in non-English speaking A&D hubs such as Russia, China and France. The use of 3-D graphics helps reduce and in some cases eliminate text-based work instruction documentation, thereby helping to both reduce errors due to communication barriers and lower documentation costs. For more information, visit SAP for Aerospace & Defense page on sap.com and the SAP Newsroom.
