At our recent meeting of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention, one of our speakers madean interesting statement that really caught my attention. He said, Leadership is temporary, butinvestment lasts forever. I began to think about that in terms of the parental role in disciplingtheir children.

We obviously lead our children in a variety of ways. We seek to lead them in characterdevelopment, establishing core values, and wise decision making. But if we take the next step andthink in terms of investing in our childrens lives, it means going beyond simply teaching and leadingin a particular moment or for a specific outcome. Investment is a long-term process and may not

really pay-off for years!I came away from our meeting realizing investing in people--especially our own family--

takes patience with a long-term view. Consider your discipleship efforts with your own family asthe most important investment decision you will ever make!

    ENGAGE

    CAN JESUS ATTEND YOUR

    STUDENTS SCHOOL?

After the Supreme Court decided thato!cially sponsored prayer in publicschools was unconstitutional in 1962, thewall of separation between church andstate grew taller and taller for about 30years. However, in the past decade or so,Congress and the Courts have beenbringing some balance back into thepicture. A simple internet search broughtthe following information to light; use it as astarting point to make sure your childsschool is in line with current law and courtdecisions.

May students express religious views inpublic schools? Yes, students may:

! Discuss their religious views withother willing student listeners.

! Read the Bible or other scriptures.

! Pray before meals or before tests.

! Pray audibly in informal settings, such as the cafeteria or in thehalls between classes, individuallyor in groups.

! Wear clothing or use materialswith religious themes on them.

These rights above, however, would fall

under the same rules as any other type ofschool activity. If it is disruptive or if itinterferes with regular school procedures, then it is inappropriate.

May students express religious views in

    their assignments?

! Yes, students may do so in theform of written or oralassignments, homework, orartwork, if the topic was left to thestudents discretion.

    May students form extracurricular

    religious clubs?

! Yes. The Equal Access Act of1984 ensures that students insecondary public schools mayform religion-based clubs, If theschool allows other clubs that arenot related to curriculum.

! A meeting of such a club mayinclude prayer, Bible reading, orother worship exercises.

May students distribute religious literaturein school?

! Yes, but on the same terms thatother types of non-school-relatedliterature can be distributed.

Galatians 5:22-23 may give the best adviceto your students on how to take Jesus intotheir school: The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control;against such things there is no law.

    THE PORN-FREE FAMILYhttp://bit.ly/pornfreefamily

If I had any doubt about the potential evilof the Internet, they were permanentlyerased when I wrote a book aboutpornography, and followed it with one onlife and faith after the digital explosion. Inthe aftermath I received email after emaildescribing what pornography and otheronline dangers had done to individuals anto families. Since I have traveled around

speaking on the subject of technology, Ivlearned even more about just how harmfuit can be to allow children or teenagers frreign when it comes to their devices andtheir access to the Web.

My children are growing up fastmy son 13 and my daughters are (almost) 11 andThey are asking for and in some caseseven needing greater access to computeTheir friends are starting to get their firstcell phones. My son just opened aFacebook account. Even my seven-year-old loves to write emails to her

    grandmother.

I am getting nervous. I know all the factsabout what they may encounter out therebut have done too little to protect them.

I am about to strengthen my plan to protemy family. I thought it might be helpful toshare this plan and this journey with you, both to get your feedback on it, and toallow you to see how it progresses. I intento report back in a month or two to let yoknow what we have learned along the wa

    Goals

    I have four main goals:

! Goal #1. I want to guard my childrenfrom seeing or experiencing what thedont know exists. I want the innocento remain innocent. In other words, Ido not want my children to seepornography or to experience

dangerous situations before I havebeen able to discuss these things withthem. I have already had several ofthese discussions with my son, but notyet with my daughters. I believe this isa talk to have with them when they areold enoughprobably around 11 or

    12.

! Goal #2. I want to prevent them fromseeing or experiencing what they maydesire once they learn that it exists. Iam under no illusion that they willnever want to see what all the buzz isabout and what their friends willinevitably be discussing. So I want tomake it as di!cult as possible for themto access dangerous or pornographicmaterial, even if they want to.

! Goal #3. I want my devices to remain

useable. I want to avoid a brute forceapproach that forces constantpassword prompts or that permitsaccess to only an approved whitelistof sites. If a solution proves toocumbersome, I know I will abandon itbefore long.

! Goal #4. I want to train my children touse the Internet and their devicesresponsibly. It would be far easier totake everything away from them, butthere is greater value, I think, in leadingand guiding them as they learn to use

them. My desire is to train my childrento use their devices and as they provethemselves, to allow them greaterresponsibility and with it freer access.

    Acknowledgements

There are several things I shouldacknowledge.

! Acknowledgement #1. I cannotcompletely protect my children. It isvery nearly inevitable that at somepoint they will encounter dangerous orpornographic material online. This maybe as a result of an unintentional click,it may be curiosity or deliberate desire,or it may be someone showing themsomething they do not want to see.Though I want to prevent them fromever seeing this material, realistically Ialso need to teach them how to actwhen they do.

! Acknowledgement #2. Neither Aileennor I struggle with a desire to look atpornography or to participate indangerous or perverse online activities,so while many people wisely putmeasures in place to guard themselvesfrom such sin, this is not an urgent

concern for us. However, I will stillattempt to address it as I go.

! Acknowledgement #3. Aileen and I donot believe that, at least for now, ourchildren have the right to privacy ontheir devices. We believe it is wellwithin our rights as parents to inspectour childrens devices, to monitor theway they use them, and to take theirdevices away if they misuse them.

    The Lay of the Land

Like so many families, we haveaccumulated an embarrassing number ofInternet-enabled devices, some bypurchase and some as gifts. None of themare the latest and greatest models, butnone of them is quite obsolete either. Aswe build a solution to monitor and protectthe family, we need it to account for a PCwith Windows and both an iMac andMacBooks running OSX. Some of these arepersonal devices (e.g. my laptop) whilesome are shared by all the family members(e.g. the iMac and the PC). We also need asolution to account for smartphones,

    tablets and iPod Touches.

    Action

Here are the initial actions I have taken.

SoftwareMy plan is to rely, as much as possible, onCovenant Eyes. I will use it first, and if I findit disappointing, look elsewhere. I haveinstalled it on all of our computers. Icreated an account for each of us withmyself as the one who will receive weeklyaccountability reports. I set both theaccountability and the filtering to the Teen(T) setting for each of the children. Aileenand I will have accountability but nofiltering. As part of this plan, I had to makesure each computer was set to go to sleepquickly following use (since this will forcethe next person to log in to their ownaccount).ComputersI have created an account for each of us onthe PC and for any of us who uses one of

the Macs. Each account has a passwordknown only to the account holder and toAileen and me.

TabletsI have an iPad I use primarily for preachinand speaking; it has a password known

only to Aileen and me. We also have an ofirst generation iPad (left over from mycontractor days) which has only very oldgames and apps. We disabled the browseand the ability to install new softwarewithout a password.iPods & Cell PhonesThe childrens iPods Touches (which theybought with paper route money) have apassword known to that child and to momand dad. Mom and dad maintain thesystem password which controls thesecurity settings. We disabled the browsethe YouTube app, and theability to install

    new software without a password.

I considered disabling the camera, buthave not yet done that. I also consideredusing the Covenant Eyes web browserwhich would then apply filtering andaccountability, but I see no reason (at leasfor now) that the kids need to browse theWeb through their devices.

TVWe do not have cable TV, so do not needto account for that.

CostCovenant Eyes is not free software, sothere is some cost involved. This plan, asstands, costs $22.99 per month whichseems reasonable enough.

    And Away We Go

I realize this solution is probably not yetcomplete and is more of a work inprogress. For example, we have a Netflixaccount, and I need to consider how tokeep my kids from accessing the worst othe Netflix library. But I think this plan isacceptable for now and will report back ina while to let you know how we have donwith it.
